Help for DL Family Raising Funds for Autism Speaks Walk

Filed in Delaware, Science and Health by on September 20, 2016

Rachel Schain is DL family (we needed a musician, ok?) and she is fundraising for an Autism Speaks Walk in a couple of weeks. Here’s what Rachel says about why she’s walking:

Thank you for supporting Autism Speaks. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

This is my son Matty. He is the sweetest, most good-natured toddler a mother could ask for. He also has autism. His autism affects his ability to communicate with us most of all. More than a year of speech therapy has yielded some results, but he still displays significant deficits. We’ve seen some wonderful progress since he began therapy, and we look forward to more growth. Advocacy organizations like Autism Speaks are invaluable to families like ours because they help parents navigate services and challenges.

We’re walking for all families of autism. Please support or join us!

Matty is adorable and so are his Mom and Dad. Rachel is a little more than $200 away from her fundraising goal — can we count on the DL community to support her goal?

Autism Speaks is a non-profit that helps fund scientific research on the causes and potential treatments for autism, and they are also one of the leading advocacy groups to raise awareness of autism and the needs of individuals and families dealing with autism.

FWIW Rachel, through years of therapy and lots of work, my 26 year old autistic son is now driving, holding down a job and living in his own apartment. Good Luck!!

Done. I spent 9 years teaching kids with autism. It is so hard for families to deal with. I am always happy to see Rachael’s reports of how Matty is doing. It’s a whole family of rock stars.

Thanks AQC! I have nothing but optimism for Matty’s future. He’s brilliant. He’s only just turned three and he knows the whole alphabet, can count to 23 out loud (probably higher in his head), and spells words with his letter magnets. He’s got his share of hurdles, still, but I know he will overcome them.

Geek, thank you as well for your donation! The whole rockin family says thanks!

Thanks for all of the help, everyone! Rachel is just $75 from her goal now — if you can support her and Matty, please do……
