Polls close at 8 pm. Here is the link for the official Commissioner of Elections Results page. Below, I will try to keep the main offices results updated as results come in, but I will be at the Townsend Party at the Mill, and I am Pandora and Cassandra will be at the Eugene Young party. Post any results or observations below in the comments.

Polls are closed. I am live at the Mill.

  2. Delaware Dem says:

I’m actually seated with real actual press. I feel strange.

  3. AQC says:

You don’t have all the results yet?

  4. Josh_M says:

    So now we wait…

  6. Prop Joe says:

At least Greg Fuller can say that as of 8:30 pm, he was leading the Lt. Governor’s race!

  7. Delaware Dem says:

Right now, with 21 districts out of 354 in, mostly Sussex and Kent districts, we have Lisa winning with 37%, Barney at 24% and Townsend at 21%

  8. Prop Joe says:

And just like that, as of 8:31, the lead evaporated

  9. Delaware Dem says:

Making my first call of the night, Sean Matthews has defeated Dennis E. Williams in the 10 RD for renomination.

  10. Delaware Dem says:

Lisa is maintaining a stubborn 20 point lead over Townsend. Meyer is winning the Exec race 52-47 with 50% in.

  11. Delaware Dem says:

Navarro maintains a 55-45 lead over KWS.

  12. Unstable Isotope says:

Looks like Barney/Townsend are spoilers for each other

  13. Delaware Dem says:

Looks like Karen Hartley Nagle will finally win an election.

  14. Not looking good for Bryan Townsend right now, but Matt Meyer is leading. Kevin Kelley has taken the lead in the mayor’s race. Looks like I was wrong about Colin Bonini, but I just may be right, for better or worse, about Karen Hartley-Nagle.

  15. Brian says:

20 points? What areas are left to report?

  16. Delaware Dem says:

Meyer expands lead over Gordon, 54-46

  17. Delaware Dem says:

With half the vote in, it is a tight one between Kelly, Purz and Young for Wilmington Mayor.

  18. That Mayor’s race is tight again, Kelley with a slim lead over Purzycki, Young right there.

  19. Unstable Isotope says:

DE dept of elections now overloaded

  20. Delaware Dem says:

Keep refreshing. It overloads when it updates.

  21. Delaware Dem says:

Calling the GOP race for Bonini.

  22. Unstable Isotope says:

I think LBR’s lead is insurmountable

  23. Looks like KWS may well be on her way out. Down by about 3,000 votes. Mitch was right!

  24. Unstable Isotope says:

    IC GOP primary super tight

  25. Kathy McGuiness on her way to a 4th place finish. Sherry Dorsey Walker helped by city turnout to possibly a second place finish.

  26. Unstable Isotope says:

Looks like KHN will win too. Interesting night.

  27. anonymous says:

“Looks like Karen Hartley Nagle will finally win an election.”

She can’t be worse than Chris Bullock. Just as bad, maybe, but not worse.

  28. Monique Johns defeats committee-endorsed candidate Richard Griffiths in the 9th RD.

  29. Unstable Isotope says:

Going to be interesting with so many incumbents (probably) losing.
Looks like Williams, Gordon, KWS all lose

  30. Unstable Isotope says:

I would say BHL on her way to victory as well. All hail the coming matriarchy!

  31. Ross says:

Well, not a whole lot of the people that I wanted to win are winning, but at least a lot of the people I wanted to lose are losing.

  32. Oh, no. Purzycki takes the lead.

  33. Delaware Dem says:

Jack Walsh wins in the 9th SD

  34. Looks like it’s gonna be Purzycki. The Markell strategy of getting a lot of R’s to switch appears to have worked. Utterly depressing.

  35. Aurochs says:

All votes reported in Representative district 14. Schwartzkopf wins 3 to 1.

At least Gordon looks to be gone.

  36. Unstable Isotope says:

Looks like Eugene Young has edged into 2nd

  37. Delaware Dem says:

I’m calling it. The lead has remained stable. It would take a miracle dump of all Townsend votes from Newark. Lisa wins the Congressional nomination.

  38. Delaware Dem says:

WDEL has called it for LBR. Good work, Bryan. Run for Governor in 2020.

  39. Unstable Isotope says:

    WDEL calling it for LBR

  40. Unstable Isotope says:

Meyer’s win is the surprise of the night for me

  41. Aurochs says:

I’m kind of bummed that Walker beat Townsend’s turnout by nearly double in my district.

  42. Delaware Dem says:

I got two things out of the four that I wanted: Gordon gone, KWS gone. I am fine with LBR as nominee, but wanted Towsend. And I wanted Young as Mayor. At least there, Dennis Williams is gone.

  43. DStorm says:

is there a good site that shows district by district or map view vs the whole state?

  44. Delaware Dem says:

Bethany Hall Long looks to have won. Her percentage lead has remained stable throughout the night.

  45. upyernoz says:

have they actually called it for Meyer yet?

  46. Delaware Dem says:

Packing up the computer here at the Mill. Time for drinks.

  47. Blue Jay Way says:

Is there any way that Gordon would try to run as an independent?

  48. anonymous says:

Incredible repudiation of an incumbent mayor — under 14% of the vote. That’s historic. I’ve never heard of an incumbent getting that little support in a primary election.

  49. Dennis Williams is gone. But Mike Purzycki is in. The second worst possible outcome.

I think that Kelley and Young had like-minded voters, but they split those voters just about down the middle, enabling Purzycki to win a primary that he couldn’t win any other way. It’s fair and square, but I don’t see Purzycki changing his stripes any more than Williams could.

Matt Meyer’s win, OTOH, is thrilling news. I agree with a commenter earlier this week. They’d better make damn sure that Gordon and his ex-cop cronies don’t take everything out the door with them.

Oh, one more thing. While I’m really disappointed by Townsend’s loss, he becomes the leading progressive in the General Assembly with Karen Peterson gone. So, at least there’s that.

  50. anon says:

Ciro & Kathy really underperformed. Sherry put up a good fight though.

    I’m glad BHL won.

  51. One thing about BHL’s victory–there will have to be a Special Election held for her State Senate seat, but of course it can’t take place until after the General, assuming she wins the general, which she will.

Meaning that, sometime between November and the beginning of session, that election will be held. D’s don’t often perform too well in such elections. That seat will be in play for the R’s.

  52. mediawatch says:

Purzycki was my third choice — behind Young and Kelley — but I believe he may be the best equipped to deal with the city’s financial issues. He has strong connections in Dover and with the business community. For better or worse, he has worked well with Buccini Pollin, who are the only significant players in downtown redevelopment. Purzycki’s work with the Hope Commission, and his interest in helping ex-offenders return to good standing in society is also a positive.
Do not be quick to write off the next four years. If Purzycki can stabilize the city’s finances, Wilmington could be much better off in 2020, when Eugene Young will be ready to assume the reins.

  53. anonymous says:

Uh…I think 86% of the voters were “like-minded” about it.

    Kelley + Purzycki = about 5,400 votes
    Young + Gregory + Williams = about 5,400 votes

I don’t know why it always works out this way, but it does.

  54. Unstable Isotope says:

I know Eugene Young supporters are disappointed but he appears to have ran a fantastic campaign. The sky is his limit.

  55. Unstable Isotope says:

Sure would like those last 5 districts for NCCo Executive

  56. Juan says:

What were we thinking with Bethany Long-Hall? I have friends in Middletown that can’t stand her. Say that she’s more concerned with the position and power and not about helping Delaware, and this is going to go right to her head.

  57. Don’t worry, UI. Gordon would have to win each by 400 votes. Ain’t happening.

BTW, it always makes me happy when you comment.

  58. upyernoz says:

There aren’t enough votes in 5 districts for Gordon to win each by 400. Each district is averaging 197 votes. If Gordon gets all the votes in the last 5 (assuming they don’t have crazy high turn out), it won’t be enough to close the gap.

  59. anon says:

I’ve interacted with Bethany quite a bit and she’s always seemed very genuine and dedicated to helping out the people.

  60. Unstable Isotope says:

It feels like The Purge: Delaware Elections

  61. anonymous says:

Eugene Young got 2,700 votes. Williams and Gregory combined got 3,000. This is a changing of the guard. Four years from now those numbers will be reversed as the old heads fade away.

  62. Unstable Isotope says:

    @El Somnambulo 🙂 ❤️

  63. Brooke says:

    Been a long day.

Really nice to see you, ElSom.

  64. Unstable Isotope says:

Heh, just now realizing Ken Matlusky ran for Wilmington Treasurer

  65. Yes, BHL can be polarizing in the sense that she is definitely driven. But she really has accomplished an awful lot. She IS a great nurse, a great teacher. Is she ambitious? Yes. But name me a politician who isn’t. At least, she has the bona fides to go with that ambition. Trust me, I’m not all in for her, in fact I voted for Ciro. (My wife voted for BHL.)

But she’s serious and she’s a grownup. I’m not upset by her win in the least.

  66. I had a feeling the Congress vote would go down the way it did. LBR in the lead by a big margin and Townsend and Barney split most of the rest.

    Glad Meyer won.

  67. Shug says:

M.P is our next Mayor. Mr. Young you did an amazing, excellent job. Your time is next. So get ready. Dennis Williams is OUT. CANNOT GET ANY BETTER.

  68. Unstable Isotope says:

Oh to be a fly on the wall at Gordon HQ

  69. kavips says:

Got to say it has been a fascinating night. One very different from expectations. There is something new in the air, and I may be wrong, but a first glance looks like a big push by Democratic women voters was much stronger than in past years.

  70. LeBay says:

Oh to be a fly on the wall at Gordon HQ

You’re not a fly on the wall at Gordon HQ, but you can bet your ass HE (or his minions) are flies on the wall here! He’s such an insecure little man.

It’s really sad, because he actually is a pretty decent administrator…certainly better than many of his predecessors. His problem is he never learned the difference between loyalty and cronyism.

  71. Delaware Dem says:

Going into tonight, I had the following priorities for the Del. Primary: 1) Townsend for Congress; 2) Meyer for Exec.; 3) Williams out and Young in in Wilmington; and 4) KWS out in IC. Got 2.5 of the 4 (Meyer, Williams out and KWS out). Good, not great night.

  72. Delaware Dem says:

The good news from the night is that the Purge has come to New Castle County government and the City of Wilmington. Meyer and Purz will do well to wipe the slate clean. Purz will do well to bring Young in as a Chief of Staff or Chief Admin. Fire everyone. Everyone.

  73. Delaware Dem says:

More good news: Nancy Willing is finally liberated from defending Tom Gordon and Karen Weldin Stewart.

  74. Anon says:

Anyone shocked that Monique Johns beat the party nominee in the 9th? That could be the biggest lopsided “upset” of the night.

  75. Tom Ford says:

Would it be possible for someone to try to mount an independent run in the city for Mayor? I’m not sure of the candidate rules, but could you do a massive write in campaign?

  76. JTF says:

The first shipment to Gitmo starts tomorrow.

Thanks for playing guys. I look forward to your tribute. I nominate El Som.

  77. commonsense says:

“Nancy Willing is finally liberated from defending Tom Gordon and Karen Weldin Stewart.” Could someone explain that one to me? Do they have pictures of her doing something terrible?

  78. Marcellus Wallace says:

“I still have to introduce myself in many places so they start trusting not only my methods but my objectives and my heart,” [Purzycki] said. “That’s something that’s going to take time.”

As first post-election comments go, this was a rather nice tone to take.

  79. loritool5000 says:

Well I was 5 out of 6, El was 2 out of 6 way to go

  80. Brooke wrote:
    “Been a long day.
Really nice to see you, ElSom.”

Ditto. It was fun in Arden. Brooke even arranged for a food truck for the voters who came after work.

  81. Dorian Gray says:

Anybody have a link to the mayoral results by district? Notice the News Journal added a blurb in the article about Purzycki’s basically banking on the 8th as Williams and others have done in the past from the 9th Ward and Eastside. Same strategy, different people. (I got a text last night while I was at the Young commiseration from a friend in Cool Springs and a Young voter. Four words: “The Highlands have spoken.”)

I’d be interested to see exactly how concentrated his support was. His quote about introducing himself was a bit strange as well. Since the general election is, for all intent and purpose, a fait accompli.

Oh, and if anyone doubted my perspective on this matter, notice a nice quote in the same NJ article praising Purzycki from the one and only Rob Buccini. His gravy train keeps on moving down the tracks, huh…

  82. Negan: Kathy McGuiness ended up an afterthought. And there’s always next time. Plus, there’s a Senate seat down there where the incumbent might just be vulnerable.

Forget the sour grapes. Console yourself with a nice glass of wine.

  83. Jason330 says:

My observation that Kathy McGuiness’ campaign wasn’t credible was validated. Maybe the next Republican Pete tries to recruit will think twice.

  84. Delaware Dem says:

Note: I deleted Negan’s comment because it contained an unsubstantiated allegation that borders on slanderous. Look, everyone, there are plenty of factual criticisms we can throw at the Speaker. So, let’s stick to those please.

  85. AAuen says:

Her campaign was completely valid. It was a crowded field, simple as that. Hopefully she will run for office again! She’s a wonderful figure in Sussex!
