Frank Ocean’s adventurous ‘NIKEs’ would have appeared here, but…Apple Music. ‘Nuff said.

You say you like the Beach Boys? Here’s some great non-Beach Boys Beach Boys:

Love this lounge lizard persona:

Let’s go out the way we came–an end of summer elegy by the Next Best Thing to the Beach Boys–and we don’t even have to put up with Mike Love, always a plus:

I just heard NAF ‘Guns’ last week. You know you are square when you hear all your new music on NPR. And on DL of course.

Later the same day I heard NAF on NPR, I coincidentally was playing an old Austin City Limits vid with Ryan Adams (any Ryan Adams fans here?). But that concert was a double bill with Jenny Lewis, and she stole the show. Somehow I managed to have missed her music all these years. So I looked up all her other music, and now I am a fan.

FYI Jenny Lewis will be at the Grand on Sept. 16.

  2. As much as I like Ryan Adams, I beg everyone to check out his work with Whiskeytown, the group he was in before he went solo. ‘Stranger’s Almanac’ is, IMHO, one of the best roots albums ever.

    BTW, Puck, thanks for sharing.

  3. BTW, ‘Grief and Praise’ is by Glenn Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket fame.

Explorers Club – A little precious, isn’t it? Maybe it is the mix, or my shitty earbuds, but their ability to find vintage clothes is better than their musicianship or song writing.

Kelsey Walden – Yuck. This blows. This is the arty, twangy kind of country crap that sophisticated people who want to seem open-minded like. Pssst….It is okay to not like country music. Country music sucks.

    More reviews to follow.

” Pssst….It is okay to not like country music. Country music sucks. ”

LOL. Yeah, but I continue to expose myself to it cause it’s art and I should be open minded about art.

  6. There’s nothing worse than that commercial country glop. Nothing. But this isn’t that. Waldon, along with women like Kacey Musgraves, Brandy Clark, Margo Price, are writing some of the strongest roots material around. I wouldn’t even straitjacket it with the term ‘country’. To me, it’s just good music.

  7. You say Explorers Club is a little precious, do ya Jason330? Well, that only serves as inspiration to me. Here, IMHO, is the best Beach Boys homage/parody ever. And, yes, it’s ‘precious’:

BTW, ‘The Dukes of Stratosphear’ is actually XTC.

explorer’s club a great choice. in the post-brian wilson category, you probably already know about linus of hollywood and jeffrey foskett. also, of course, the high llamas’ take on that. lots more, too. it’s a great sub-genre.
