Saturday Open Thread [8.27.16]

NBC News has tracked down Dr. Harold Bornstein, the doctor who signed the completely bizarre letter of health for Donald Trump. It turns out that Dr. Harold Bornstein does exist, and he is like a character out of the Sopranos or Breaking Bad, who treats patients in the back of a strip club. He wrote the letter in 5 minutes while a Trump limousine was waiting outside to pick it up.

Eric Trump: Dad is running because he watches waaaaaay too much Fox News and is haunted by the “PC” boogeymen

Let’s look at the reasons Trump is running according to his idiot son:

“He opens up the paper each morning and sees our nation’s leaders giving a hundred billion dollars to Iran,”

Iranian frozen assets were unfrozen through negotiations, so this is bullshit.

… or he opens the paper and some new school district has just eliminated the ability for its students to say the pledge of allegiance,

Pure BS. Show me this non-existent school district.

…or some fire department in some town is ordered by the mayor to no longer fly the American flag on the back of a fire truck,”

Again, what a load of crap. Please point me to whatever “paper” carried this story.

“Or, he sees the tree on the White House lawn has been renamed ‘Holiday tree’ instead of ‘Christmas tree.’

Nope. Maybe in Bill O’Reilly’s fever dreams, but not in reality.

I could go on and on for hours. Those are the very things that made my father run, and those are the very things he cares about.”

So… he cares about utter nonsense. Got it.

Del. ADA’s Progressive Rankings of the General Assembly

Earlier this week, the Delaware Chapter of the ADA released its annual Legislative Report Card, which evaluates each Representative and Senator’s votes on priority progressive legislation and determines which have acted as Progressive Heros, or, alternatively Progressive Zeros. For the 2nd year in a row, Rep. John Kowalko in the House and Sen. Bryan Townsend were the legislators at the top of the list as the most progressive in Delaware. The full list is inside…

Barney joins LBR in airing television ads, but he repeats false Social Security claim.

Barney joins LBR in airing television ads, but he repeats false Social Security claim.

It’s your generic political ad, professionally produced, and it is likely airing only on cable and not over air out of Philadelphia (as that would be prohibitively expensive). Still, airing and producing this ad likely took a good chunk of Barney’s cash on hand.

The ad, though, repeats a false claim that Barney is the only candidate with a plan to protect and expand Social Security.

Celia Cohen attended TEDxWilmington

…at least I think she did. It is hard to tell because, as she eases into retirement, her blog posts are now 95% content free.

Here is the substance: Chris Coons cracked a joke about how unpopular congress is. He had a constituent that stopped getting social security, but he fixed it. Coons also formed a congressional “Chicken Caucus,” with a Republican from Georgia.

That’s, literally, it. I wonder if Delaware Today, Ramone Family of Business, Bonny Anderson, David Deputy, Lisa B. Goodman, Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, Norman D. Griffiths, Laird Stabler, Carolyn Swayze, Frances M. West, S.B. & Katy Woo and Bill Wood feel like they are getting their money’s worth.

Friday Open Thread [8.26.16]

Here is Matt Flegenheimer’s write-up at The New York Times on Hillary’s speech yesterday, which I consider to be one of her best speeches ever:

In a 31-minute address, building to a controlled simmer, Mrs. Clinton did everything but call Mr. Trump a racist outright — saying he had promoted “racist lie” after “racist lie,” pushed conspiracy theories with “racist undertones” and heartened racists across the country by submitting to an “emerging racist ideology known as the alt-right.” […]

With Mr. Trump’s rise, Mrs. Clinton has often struck a have-you-no-sense-of-decency theme in her critiques — warning sternly and repeatedly that the arc of his candidacy transcended standard political attack. But her effort on Thursday was remarkable for its exhaustive accounting of Mr. Trump’s controversial racial history in business and in his presidential campaign.
