Where’s our live blog thread? I think Pandora is AWOL. Anyway, here it is. Hillary Rodham Clinton makes history and accepts the Democratic nomination tonight. Let us know what you are watching, hearing and thinking tonite.

For the good of our country and to maintain our stature in this world, we need Hillary to rout Trump in this election. We need to clearly and completely reject his idiocy. I believe that is our responsibility as citizens at this moment in our history.

That was a good speech. Aimed at the country more than the delegates.
Hillary’s speech was good and had everything I wanted to hear. So good in fact that the focus now has to be on winning the House as well as the Senate so she can cash the checks she wrote tonight. We need not only a landslide but a wave.

There are many times when I have pinned conservatives in arguments by comparing Obama’s accomplishments to those of their icon’s, and stating the obvious, that Obama was the best president we would ever see in our lifetimes… After tonight’s speech, I wonder if I stated that prematurely….
The die is cast. I’m generally feeling pretty good about the outcome. However, that could be the endorphin rush from the convention spectacle. There is a lot of time between now and November and there remains the potential for an October surprise.
Still, if the Democrats are smart they will heed their own advice and work very hard for the down ticket. Talk about landslides could have the unintended consequence of suppressing the vote, although the historic nature of this election could serve to increase the vote just so people can say they were there. So maybe that’s a wash.
Even the protest vote against Clinton by the Sanders progressives is useful, the more vocal they are the more people can see Clinton as the steady hand. So the bah humbug can serve a purpose. Of course if I was a progressive running for office, I would probably grab on to those coattails and shape my message to align with the most progressive of Clinton’s positions.
I don’t know who was responsible for arranging the speakers for that convention, but it was absolutely inspired.
People may look back and identify the moment that Khizr Khan pulled that copy of the US Constitution out of his pocket and offered to lend it to Donald Trump as the moment that Donald Trump ceased to be viewed as a viable candidate. I still can’t believe that I saw that. Historic.
Yes, there is now the real possibility of an historic landslide. I’m positive that you will now see a steady stream of Republicans endorsing Clinton (not always necessarily a good thing) and you will almost certainly never see Trump forgiving that loan. Where is he going to get the money now to even run a basic campaign? I have no idea.
If I’m not totally euphoric, it’s only b/c I think that this will only encourage Hillary’s most hawkish instincts. While the diehard Bernie supporters were no doubt annoying, they do have a point about a too-muscular foreign policy. The people they booed generally were the proponents and, in the case of Panetta, architects of that policy.
Having said that, if the post-convention polls bear out my instincts, Trump will really be out there all alone appealing to the Duck Dynasty dead-enders. I also think that the Senate is now almost certain to flip.
Cut and save.
That was the most successful convention since 1992, and the 1992 convention ended the 1992 campaign. The Senate is almost certainly Democratic. The House maybe too. But not a single one of us can be complacent. Donald Trump is an actual fascist dictator and he must be stopped at all costs. So you have to vote as if your life depended on it, because it does.
Lots of anti-Trump Republicans having a sad this morning because Hillary laid out a progressive vision for governing.
That has always been the problem with wooing “moderate” Republicans. They are not really moderate — they think that if they vote for the Democrat, the Democrat must therefore not govern like a Democrat. This was demonstrated at the start of Obama’s presidency, when they claimed he wouldn’t compromise on health care because he wouldn’t adopt their proscriptions.
So fuck that moving to the middle bullshit. The speech was aimed at unifying party, aiming for the fractious left, not the selfish bastard “moderate” Republicans who are upset that their serfs no longer accept the dog-whistle version of sexism, racism and greed. The GOP frank and file demanded the real thing and got it in Trump.
Anon… some pundit whose post I flagged for tomorrow’s open thread said that last two days of the convention, including Hillary, have used conservative language to present a progressive agenda. Basically, they are trying to convert those moderate Republicans into liberal Dems. We will see if it works or not.
