Matt Meyer Polls the NCCo Executive Race
He had a poll done by Public Policy Polling and the result (as reported in the NJ) is at Gordon 33%, Meyer at 30%, Undecided at 38? This is a statistical tie.
You have to acknowledge that the biggest thing that this poll tells you is that there are a bunch of people who are not paying attention to this race yet. But among those who are, there is a strong sentiment for replacing Gordon. And who could blame them? A man who already had ethical issues who seemingly can’t remediate that tendency. Between Grimaldi and his tapes, Cheryl McDonough and her tape, the Hall-Long “let’s sweep it under the rug” business, the longstanding fight with women on County Council, the increase of ethics complaints at the County among others would certainly lead folks paying attention that there is something not quite right in the NCCo Execs office.
But Gordon does have the endorsement of the Insurance Commissioner!
As Meyer canvassed the Triangle neighborhood, he seized on the home of incumbent Insurance Commissioner Karen Weldin Stewart. Her front yard is home to multiple Tom Gordon signs.
Meyer was greeted by Stewart, who was eating dinner. Meyer asked why she wouldn’t back him.
After a long, contemplative pause to chew her food, she replied: “Gordon is sincere and a good manager. He just seems to instinctively know how to get to the heart of an issue that helps the most people … I don’t know you that well.”
THAT should be an automatic disqualifier. And then there’s this endorsement:
Gordon recently got the endorsement of the county’s Democratic Party Committee, a change from his previous campaign. He expects to make gains in parts of the county that favored his opponent in 2012.
This is why the DelDems have to stop endorsing before their voters vote. You can’t signal to your party members that *this* is the guy you are endorsing, while there are still people trying to garner votes. In light of Daneillo’s letter a week or so back, this practice begins to make sense as a way to tamp down on primaries. it has to stop.
Matt Meyer still has alot of work to do (And I am a fan of creating an engineering hub here, if it is focused on energy engineering.), but polling in the race is hopeful.
This is good news for Meyer. Still I hope he is already in for a second shot if this primary falls a little short. It is just so hard to break into that 38% undecided, many of whom have a policy against paying close attention.
You have to expect that the NJ will put out a four page spread about Gordon and all his “accomplishments” the day before the election. He will probably get their endorsement at the same time. I have little faith in ever having any objectivity by the NJ.
I actually wouldn’t expect that at all, Dem. I would expect a profile on Gordon, probably next week, or similar length to this. Which is how it works.

Commonsense, I hope you are right, but the NJ does not seem to take a very hard line on TG, when it comes to the editors choice. Here is hoping you are right.
Gordon left the county with a $40 million deficit when his first 8 years of “no tax increases” ended. It’s obvious he’s spent with reckless abandon again this time around – Meyer and the R candidates need to educate the uninformed. Lord knows what the books will look like after another 4 years of him at the helm of his fiefdom.
