Crane Courted Atkins to Pose as a Dem

Filed in National by on June 7, 2016

I have to admit, this makes me a little angry. Mitch Crane is an honorable guy, who works his ass off trying to elect Democrats.  He did himself and the party a grave disservice entertaining this nonsense. When Gilligan pulled this shit, I was like, “Oh Well” Gilligan is a fop and a party functionary. But Crane… Jesus. With “Democrats” like Atkins, what, at long last, is the fucking point?

Ex-Rep. John Atkins decides not to run day after arrest

Former state Rep. John C. Atkins, who pleaded guilty to a domestic violence offense in 2006 and once resigned from the General Assembly amid an ethics controversy, was arrested after a physical dispute with his ex-girlfriend, state police said late Sunday.

The Friday arrest came just days before Atkins was due to decide whether to attempt an election bid for his former 41st District seat, according to Mitch Crane, chair of the Sussex County Democratic Party.

“Atkins had been weighing a run and had had meetings with me and other key players,” Crane, who is traveling out of state, said Monday. “I was told Mr. Atkins’ decision not to run Saturday morning.”

  1. It’s not totally clear from the article that Crane courted Atkins, or that Atkins was just making the rounds.

Either way, Atkins saved us the cost of yet another special election. He wasn’t getting through another term without yet another conflagration. Where there’s tire smoke, there’s fire.

    That boy ain’t right.

“Atkins had been weighing a run and had had meetings with me and other key players,”

Why would Crane put it like that? If it was Atkins, it should have been a pretty short meeting.

It isn’t clear to me from this article that Mitch was doing the courting. Plus, Atkins is regularly derisive of the current incumbent’s performance in office on his FB page. Lots of Atkins’ followers there are just as derisive and also spend some time still working through some constituent services with Atkins. Frankly it would have surprised me if Atkins *didn’t* run.

His voting record (even while nominally a D) was Republican. He is a Republican. Without a Crane or Gilligan (or maybe even a Carney) baiting him into running as a Dem, wouldn’t he naturally primary the incumbent?

  5. The R’s threw him out the first time. Schwartzkopf convinced him to run as a D, not that he needed much convincing. Crane wasn’t on the radar screen as Sussex County chair at that point. The D’s were gonna throw him out a second time before he resigned.

Here’s hoping there isn’t a third time. Boy’s not right. Won’t ever be right.

  6. Jason330 says:

    “…me and other key players”

Schwartzkopf is clearly the other key player. No doubt Pete would welcome Atkins who makes him look like a Democrat in comparison.

  7. cassandra m says:

Yes, Schwartzkopf is definitely Atkins protector and enabler here.

No Democrat can win in the 41st with Trump at top of the ticket this year… Fools errand.

  9. JTF says:

Schwartzkopf had Atkins run as a D, just like he’s having Kathy Mcguinness – Utah Republican – run as a D. Seems like there’s a pattern.

MsGuiness got Sonia Sloan endorsement. That’s a big deal in some circles.
Very credible, liberal, Pro choice long term Democrat. Her views seem liberal from what I have read. More liberal than B.H.Long who actually voted twice to keep the death penalty in DE.

  11. Dem19703 says:

Sonia Sloan is also hosting a fundraiser for Cathy Cloutier, so…

  12. anonymous says:

@JTF: Just as Schwartzkopf, like every state cop before him, is an R who ran as a D, and I don’t care what his registration history says.

With the state GOP losing power, the state cops had to join the D’s to keep power, and so they did. Now they’re turning the pro-business, pro-status quo kleptocracy that has always run the place into D’s too, so they can all stay in power.

Defeat Pete! And I don’t care who or how.

So we’ve been told, “His voting record (even while nominally a D) was Republican”. Which damn democratic(please not , little D” Which one of the idiots currently espouse democratic principles?

  14. Jason330 says:

    What?

  15. Emma says:

Pete has an opponent, a well-qualified progressive one. Donations would help. http://donforachange.com

Thanks for the reminder. I’m putting up an online fundraiser for Don this afternoon. Stay tuned.

  17. chris says:

Someone should get Bernie to endorse this guy taking on Pete. That would generate some interest and maybe money in a primary.

Seems to be a recurring theme…a bully (Schwartzkopf) supporting a bully (Atkins).
