Cringe Inducing Senator Induces Cringes

Filed in National by on April 28, 2016

The News Journal thinks Carper’s song was sexist. I think he was his normal awkward self, although maybe even a little more uneasy around actual humans these days.

Mama always said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.”

Because words have power, and when it comes to accuracy and inferences, it’s better to stay quiet than say something that you may not be able to apologize for.

U.S. Sen. Tom Carper’s remarks prior to Hillary Clinton’s campaign appearance Monday in Wilmington have been called “awkward.”

Especially concerning was the senator’s reference to the Donna Summer song “She Works Hard For the Money.”

If Hillary Clinton were a man, would a U.S. senator lead a crowd in singing a song titled, “He works hard for the money?”

We think not.

He’s just socially awkward. He has always been that way.

  2. jason330 says:

This is just a train wreck though. I mean jeez.

There is no song called “He Works Hard for the Money.” Men’s work pays 43% better (assuming women are paid 30% less).

BTW, the song was about an actual woman, a washroom attendant. Donna Summer was expressing sympathy for a below-minimum-wage worker (the lyrics say “just tips for pay”). It’s not really out of place if you consider that a lot of Hillary’s experience has been cleaning up other people’s messes and not getting enough credit for it.

I just repaired my lawnmower and mowed the lawn, did the dishes, and folded laundry. Forgive me if I am a little confused – what exactly is “men’s work?”

  5. Ben says:

Jobs dominated by men… Engineering, Upper management, pro-sports, doctors.
Jobs dominated by women … educators, nurses, social workers.

neither one ought to be gender-specific, but numbers are numbers. Maybe we should be paying teachers and nurses and social workers better.

  6. Ben says:

    wait… puck
you mowed the lawn right before a rain?

  7. anonymous says:

In gender pay gap terms, men’s work is any work done by a cisgendered man.

Jimmy Fallon played this awkward Carper tape during his monologue the other night . This is a national embarrassment. Bizzarro!!

  9. pandora says:

Oh… oh my. I just got around to watching that.

  10. SussexWatcher says:

Fuck, that’s just Carper. He’s just doing what he’s always done – talked down to his audience and repeating the same five things. (Navy pilot, tutoring, bipartisanship, balancing the budget, the 1976 race for treasurer.) His standard speeches, such as they are, consist of five minutes of praising VIPs around the room and telling stories about his glory days in the 1990s, and 30 seconds of semi-relevance to the subject at hand.

He couldn’t do that as a time-filler for Hillary, so he ad-libbed, and it sucked. He’s just embarrassing himself and us now. And he doesn’t have any veteran staffers who can get up in his grill and tell him he’s behaving badly or doing the job poorly – just a bunch of yes-men and -women who trip over themselves to open the door for him so he won’t yell. At least he didn’t arrive a half-hour late and then shake everyone’s hand.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you U.S. Senator Tom Carper – the Boomers’ Bill Roth!

If he runs again in 2018, we need a good Democrat to take him on. Since that’s never going to happen, I’ll be out knocking on doors for Bonini or Simpler to send him home.

I had to start my day with this old labor organizing chant:

“When I say Donna, you say Summer.
    Donna… Summer
    Donna… Summer
When I say Diva, you say extraordinaire…”

  12. SW: That’s perhaps the best description of Carper I’ve ever read.

Someone please mark the date and time. Celia has been blogging for longer than I have, and this Carper clip has moved her to include her FIRST EVER LIVE LINK within a blog post.

    Hell has frozen over.

This clip really, really makes fun of Carper. This is the kind of embarrassment Delaware does not need to go national https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkQdfGzqGe8&feature=youtu.be

  15. It, uh, kinda pales in comparison to Murdertown USA.

Carper’s benefactors love him just the way he is–out of touch with ordinary people.

“He works hard for the money and you know he’ll treat you right.”
