BHL Statement via FB

Filed in National by on April 7, 2016

I join other Delawareans in being disturbed by what I heard on the tapes and I am frustrated that my husband and I have been pulled into their long-standing feud. What adds to my anger is that the accusations made against us are completely untrue, and it’s a nameless, politically-motivated source who is manipulating the media coverage to tell a story that just doesn’t exist.

Dana is a Housing Inspector who works as a contractor for the New Castle County Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. This is essential work that benefits some of the most vulnerable populations in our state. In August of 2015, one section 8 housing client commented that my husband discussed my 2014 campaign with her nearly a year earlier. A formal complaint was never issued and through an HR review, Dana was cleared of any wrongdoing. As he stated unequivocally yesterday, he did not use or furnish any section 8 lists for campaign purposes.

I never had a single conversation with anyone in County government about my husband or my husband’s employment status. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of this issue until this week. I have never agreed to take a position on policy based on my husband’s standing with the county. I make decisions based on what is best for my district and the State of Delaware.

It’s unfortunate that a settled, unfounded personnel issue involving Dana has become public because of the tapes provided to the media. But again, I could not, would not and most importantly did not discuss a political deal over a private personnel issue I wasn’t even aware of. Any implication that I would is contrary to the truth and goes against everything I stand for.

At the end of the day, this is the latest chapter in an ongoing personal feud between the County and a former employee – a feud that’s the subject of a pending lawsuit that I have no intention of commenting on.

My focus from here is on moving our state forward, and working every day to fight for a stronger, healthier Delaware for all of us.

Like I said yesterday, in the tape, Gordon is basically projecting his corrupt worldview onto Senator Hall Long. Since Gordon is a known scumbag, I’m not sure this thing is as fatal as I thought it was.

As for her husband’s guilt or innocence…. who knows?

“I never had a single conversation with anyone in County government about my husband or my husband’s employment status.”

“At the end of the day, this is the latest chapter in an ongoing personal feud between the County and a former employee…”

Finally, someone at the state level calls Gordon out on his BS.

  3. aaanonymous says:

Gordon projects his corrupt world view onto everyone.

  4. anon says:

As he stated unequivocally yesterday, he did not use or furnish any section 8 lists for campaign purposes.

The definition of “is.” The key words being “for campaign purposes.” If he was acting outside of the formal campaign, this statement is true. It doesn’t mean that he did not use the Section 8 lists for his own purposes, which functioned outside of the campaign.

She said this in her tele-conference with reporters, “Hall-Long denied the purchasing of any low-income housing lists or any strategy to target low-income voters in 2014 re-election bid. ”

You can’t purchase those lists, they are confidential. This is bs.

    But here’s the money shot:

When asked whether a paper trail could prove the allegation was unfounded, Hall-Long said a formal complaint was never issued.

Was a law never broken because a “formal complaint” was never filed, and therefore there was no investigation of criminality?

Does anyone think someone living in Section 8 housing would be willing to file a “formal complaint” against a housing inspector once they find out the housing inspector is married to a powerful state senator?

  5. liberalgeek says:

There wasn’t even an unofficial complaint until the complainant knew that his wife was a senator.

  6. jason330 says:

“If he was acting outside of the formal campaign, this statement is true. It doesn’t mean that he did not use the Section 8 lists for his own purposes, which functioned outside of the campaign.”

The plain language intent is “this didn’t happen”. Either you are torturing the plain language or she is. I don’t know either of you well enough to pick, but yours seems to be a bit of a stretch.

  7. anon says:

Either you are torturing the plain language or she is.

It didn’t take me 3+ days to come up with my response.

  8. Dem19703 says:

The definition of “is.” The key words being “for campaign purposes.”

Really? I agree with Jason, the plain language is that it did not happen. As far as statements go, it is pretty clear and unambiguous. If you are going to attribute calculating detail to each conjunction and pronoun then it must be torture just to read the headlines.

  9. chris says:

I am skeptical of BHL and Dana Long here because Dana Long was actually arrested for stealing campaign signs. Shows a strong lack of character. They were panicking in that race which BHL barely won last time. Then Section 8 people were being called to vote by whom- the guy who was stealing signs. Its just a coincidence that he has a job with Section 8 and hes leaning on Section 8 folks to vote? the whole thing STINKS and warrants an impartial federal US ATTY investigation. Too much Delaware Way here!

  10. Prop Joe says:

Why stop at a US Attorney investigating it… I say they should press AG Lynch to swoop in from DC and wrangle this shit to the ground and topple this corruption… Lynch has effectively taken down FIFA, so BHL should be easy-peezy!

  11. chris says:

Has anyone heard the line ” We welcome a full and complete investigation of this matter by federal authorities in order to clear our names” by either Gordon or Hall-Long? I doubt you will ever hear those words from their lips.

  12. BullMooose says:

If Grimaldi thought there was an actual criminal case here, he could have easily gone to state or federal authorities. The only reason to leak it the way he did was to try to dupe reporters into accepting his spoon-fed information. And sadly that’s what happened. The reporters who wrote about this took Grimaldi’s word as to what happened and that the tape was valid and then wrote articles implying that a person committed a crime without doing much of an investigation of their own to determine what if any evidence exists. WDEL was more worried about getting a story first and wasn’t worried about getting the story right. I’m not defending what Gordon said on the tape. It’s unfortunate that the best-qualified candidate in the race for lieutenant governor is caught up in this mess because of what appears to be a false allegation against her husband.

  13. Jason330 says:

I get that sentiment. But I don’t know.

  14. aaanonymous says:

@Prop Joe: I call bullshit. You’ve been around the block. The US attorney’s office for Delaware is the ONLY agency that has EVER investigated political corruption in Delaware. EV. ER. So stop pretending that’s a ridiculous suggestion.

Besides, Charlie Oberley owes Biden for the job, so he’s hardly going to go after Joe’s pet dog.

As for whether WDEL fucked up, what do you care? You still got the information. The notion that Grimaldi is making up Long’s involvement is beyond far-fetched. Quitcher bitchin’, unless you’re on the payroll.

As for Bethany Hall-Long, I have never bought the bullshit that she didn’t know he was out of the house at all hours stealing political signs. Most wives would demand to know what he was doing at that hour. C’mon, have you lost your sense of smell or your bullshit detector? Plausible deniability requires, y’know, plausibility. This woman has as much business being governor as you do repainting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, which unfortunately goes double for everyone else in the race.

  15. Truthseeker says:

Bullmoose, and u know this to be true?? How??? You accuse WDEL of taking Grimaldi’s word without investigation. What proof do u have to dispute it??

  16. commonsense says:

This is easy to clear up. Just release the internal investigation by the Department of Community Services. Why wouldn’t you? Gordon said there was an investigation, and Long was cleared. Those files are either public record, or personnel files that Long would be able to consent to release.

  17. LeBay says:

If Grimaldi thought there was an actual criminal case here, he could have easily gone to state or federal authorities.

Ask Colm Conolly how that worked out for him. And he had a decent case. A case that got transferred to an OLD, crooked ass Dem judge who thwarted his every move.

That’s why Gordon wasn’t convicted of a felony. This same judge sentenced an acquaintance of mine (now deceased) to Lewisburg Federal Prison for TAX EVASION. The guy was guilty, but Lewisburg is a bit harsh for a white collar crime. Most tax evaders go to low or minimum security prisons.

This is sleazy Dem politics at its worst, and it’s the reason I’m not a registered Democrat. The DE Democratic party is sleazy and corrupt.

  18. Jason330 says:

commonsense is assuming that Gordon’s “investigation” was an investigation. That’s a pretty nonsensical jump.

  19. Dem19703 says:

Jason330, also, if Long wanted to release them he would have to get them form Gordon’s administration. That would be a battle in itself. The last thing they want is their internal records and procedures released. It’s not entirely Long’s decision to do this. I know some folks will say that he can demand it and it is his right. Keep in mind who he would be demanding it from.

  20. Mark Stewart says:

Lame-O. Too chicken to speak to the press in person. Verdict=guilty. Bethany Hall-Long has a and past and too linked to Tom Gordon. This is not going to go away until justice is done.

  21. I don’t generally make fun of crappy sentences. I’ll make an exception for this one:

“Bethany Hall-Long has a and past and too linked to Tom Gordon.”

And I’m not even voting for her. But a crappy sentence is a crappy sentence. Has John Atkins’ ‘friend’ taken to the internets again?

  22. Mark Stewart says:

What a scam. I just voted for Greg Fuller in your current poll and nothing happened. How does Bethany Hall-Longs votes keep going up but Greg Fuller continues to have a 1 vote. Not possible. This a blatant attempt to make all that’s happened with Bethany Hall-Long this week blow over and make sure everyone still has confidence in a untrustworthy candidate. Have you noticed no one else’s votes have changed? Dirty!!!!

  23. liberalgeek says:

I show one vote for Fuller. I assume that is you.

  24. Mark Stewart says:

No, the vote was already there before I voted.

  25. liberalgeek says:

How could you know that? You cannot see the number of votes cast for anyone until AFTER you cast your vote.

  26. Mark Stewart says:

When you go to votetracker you can view results, which I did before voting. Sounds like you have something to do with this because you seem to have alot of interest in my comment. I’m just trying to point out what’s going on. If you’re not interested in the truth, fine. Go ahead. Try voting for anyone else but BHL and see what happens to the tally. A whole lot of nothing.

  27. pandora says:

FYI: I’m the second for Fuller – not because I want to vote for Fuller. It was a test.

  28. Dem19703 says:

Whoa, easy on the accusations, Mark. Just because your candidate isn’t pulling votes doesn’t mean there is a grand conspiracy. Take it down a notch.

  29. Charles in Charge says:

Why was the poll removed? BHL was ahead by a large margin last time I checked. If there is any conspiracy, it’s that it was taken down after only a few hours with BHL firmly in the lead. Is Mark Stewart controlling the polls at DL?

  30. pandora says:

Do people actually take these polls seriously? These comments are the best.

  31. Ciro Piscopo says:

Bethany was leading the pack by dozens of votes. No surprise there. Interesting that the kids at Delaware Liberal decided to remove it. A bit worried, perhaps? Oh well, back to Little Italy for now.

  32. Dave says:

People know the votes here don’t actually count, right?

  33. Dem19703 says:

Ciro Piscopo, that name made me laugh. I’m looking forward to other campaigns digging up obscure former SNL cast members to campaign. Anyone know what Mary Gross, Tim Kazurinsky, and Robin Duke are up to these days?

  34. Capesdelaware says:

I was FIRST for Greg Fuller . Know him 11 years . Man is solid .

  35. Kids, these polls are for information purposes only. We’ve even eliminated the betting lines. They’re for fun. And sometimes for freepers.

It’s nice to know that all three of Greg Fuller’s supporters are frequenting our site, but, kids, voting for him on one of our polls will accomplish Absolute Zero for your campaign.

BTW, how about Kazarinsky Hartley-Nagle? This could be a fun game…

  36. Dem19703 says:

    Robin Duke for Brad Eaby?

  37. Prop Joe (Hawkeye) says:

The comments on this thread remind me of Rep. Kowalko’s comments on another thread about how publishing the polling results is tatamount to voter disenfranchisement because if one candidate is shown as significantly ahead in the poll, it dissuades someone from going out to vote… therefore it’s voter intimidation…

In all seriousness (not really), this poll is clearly a blatant attempt by the nefarious denizens of this corrupt socialist blog to control the outcome of the race for the monumentally important, can’t-do-without position of Lieutenant Governor. I demand the U.S. Attorney or Justice Department investigate this brazen attempt to usurp the race for Lieutenant Governor from the rightful hands of the God-fearing, Patriotic residents of the State of Delaware.

  38. Dem19703 says:

It’s actually a far reaching corrupt plan, probably hatched in the smokey back rooms of the DL “headquarters” at 1209 N. Orange by the Tea Party. Didn’t you know that this whole site was created by Dick Armey and the Koch brothers in their grand plan to destroy the left by posing as progressives? You will probably say, “but there was no full scale Tea Bagger movement when this site was founded.” That just shows the brilliance and foresight of DL’s secret founding fathers! The jig is up, come clean on your plans now, as they have been revealed!!

Yeah, it actually hurt to write that. Putting on the tin foil hat makes me a little queasy. How do people do it day in and day out? It must be exhausting.

  39. Ciro Piscopo says:

Still no explanation as to why it was removed so quickly. Sorry that your perennial candidate for LTG…the always running for office Sherry Dorsey, didn’t register more than 2 votes. Oh well, anyone seen Nora Dunn or Jon Lovitz?

  40. jason330 says:

Dem19703 nailed it. What other explanation can possibly make sense?

  41. OK, what bar is at 1209 N. Orange?
