R. I. P. Merle Haggard
No, he wasn’t an Okie from Muskogee. He was a country bard from Oildale, California, and he was one of the most empathetic songwriters of the last 50 years. I also think he was one of the greatest. He was especially attuned to the plight of working people. Here are some of my favorites, all but one performed by him, the other a Dave Alvin cover that gives me goosebumps.
