Jason330’s Pop Culture Corner

The Pop Culture barn is filling up with poo. Time to muck the stables.

Most recent first. When did the Golden Globe awards turn into the Grammy awards with a bunch of awards going to shows/people I’ve never heard of? That is a rhetorical question. The answer is when AmazonPrime and other streaming services started producing TV shows. Should I give up and get AmazonPrime? That question isn’t rhetorical. Speaking of the Golden Globe Awards, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schuler(SP?) are awesome. Anyone who doesn’t think so is a goddamn idiot.

The H8tful 81ght (sp?).
It was just okay. QT is trying a little too hard to blur the line between art and Ewww. So the first 2/3rd of the movie is awfully plodding, while the last 3rd is super gross. The best thing about he movie is the performance of Jennifer Jason Leigh(sp?). She was great, and I think her performance redeems a movie that would have fallen below “okay” without her. All of this is very surprising to me because I have never liked Jennifer Jason Leigh (SP?) in a movie before. (And I’m going way back to St Elmo’s Fire)

Star Wars. I can’t believe R2D2 had sex with Yoda and is Han Solo’s Dad!!! [I guess I should have said Spoiler Alert!] Anyway… the beautiful thing about this star wars is the return to the rich visual vocabulary of the first film. The Plot…meh. But you don’t go for the plot, you go for the PEW! PEW! PEW! and the pews in this one hit the thermal exhaust port. My one regret was walking out feeling like I had now signed up for sitting through 3 more movies waiting for the big, once and for all, good vs. evil showdown in film #5 (or 15 depending on how you number them).

  1. Is the one on the left one of the Bush twins?

Get Amazon Prime. It’s the best deal around – movies, music, books and two day free shipping.

  3. puck says:

Amazon Prime is a good deal for the (included) free shipping and the free video. For now Amazon goods are usually the cheapest price on the Internet, and the Prime fee is reasonable. But their business model is to get you to use Amazon for everything, so watch out for boil-the-frog price increases.

Amy Schumer? as in, cousin of DINO corpricrat, Chuck Schumer?

  5. jason330 says:

Correction: I confused Jennifer Jason Leigh with Mare Winningham. Jennifer did an okay job as Stacy in Fast Time at Ridgemont High. But i haven’t liked her in a movie since then.

  6. Dorian Gray says:

“Mark, too, succumbs to the familiar enchantment of popular culture, leaves transportation negotiations to his bride, and drifts with Sternberg like flotsam toward the lounge and the syndicated television program “Hawaii Five-O.” Numerous references to popular culture pervade the art which all three of these sexually mature children consume and aspire one day to produce and re-present. Popular culture is the symbolic representation of what people already believe.”

Total coincidence, really. I happen to read that novella over my vacation and then saw this post upon my return.

I have no great issue with “Pop Culture” as I have no great issue with, say, Snickers candy bars. I just understand that it’s a rhetorical stretch to call the candy food, if you see what I mean. Nobody spends too much time discussing the types of junk they prefer. Generally it’s consumed, forgotten and rarely spoken of.
