DL Faves Among Bryan Townsend’s Advisory Committee…

Filed in Delaware by on September 22, 2015

…including our very own Cassandra Marshall and (might as well be our very own) Mike Matthews.

What I love about this list of leaders who will be part of Bryan Townsend’s campaign is that many, if not most, are people who are vital to our state, yet have generally not been among the party insiders who have consciously discouraged progressive influence within the Democratic Party.

Here’s the list, in alphabetical order:

Charles “Chuck” Armbruster
Vikki Bandy
Fay Blake
Jack and Gemma Buckley
Charito Calvachi-Mateyko
Charles Durante
John Gooden
Roberta (Bobbie) Hemmerich

That’s a great list. Lots of, “cut the bullshit and get to work” types.

  2. Dorian Gray says:

Jack & Gemma… They’re my book dealers! Anyone who can find me an out-of-print copy of the Voltaire biography I needed for my library is alright by me!

    DE is a Train wreck.

    Bryan can’t fix $hit.

    Insights!

  5. puck says:

At least there will be one less moran in Congress yammering about trickle-down and austerity.

  6. Milli Vanilli says:

Irony: A person calling others morons, yet misspells moron.

  7. jason330 says:

I’m sure that irony was by design. A callback to that famous picture, “Get a Brain Morans”

  8. Dorian Gray says:

I find Tom Kline’s comment thoughtful and constructive.

Did Bryan Townsend jump in a little too soon, on the recent U of D issue?

    Bryan Townsend weighs in ~

As a proud graduate of the University of Delaware, I am shocked and outraged by the hateful display of racism and bigotry reported on UD campus earlier tonight. This is a disgusting act of cowards –but a hate crime committed in the shadows is no match for the bright lights of love, tolerance, and acceptance that can shine at UD and beyond. I stand with those students who stand for all students.

  10. cassandra_m says:

    ^^^ Speaking of morans.

  11. Dorian Gray says:

He makes a valid point though. Townsend made a very strongly worded comment before he had any idea what was happening. Now he looks ridiculous.

Perhaps if he’d just follow that up with something like… “hey, sorry, I was quick to the draw and didn’t have all the facts. I am, as most of us are these days, very sensitive to current events and escalated racial tension. I wrote when I should have waited. My apologies on this one.”

But I guess we’ll just call Anonymous a moron and pull a Trump. Never take anything back.

  12. Jason330 says:

…and to Anonymous’ credit, he didn’t use this as an opportunity to say that this U of D event means that there is no such thing as hate crime.

  13. cassandra_m says:

Even though this story has been evolving throughout the day — calling (fairly credibly IMO) into question the original narrative.

So we’ll still call Anonymous a moran and let the story get to an answer before calling for anything to be taken back.

  14. Dorian Gray says:

Oh, on balance Anonymous is a fucking clown. We agree on that point. No matter how this turns out Townsend’s comments were premature. I understand where he’s coming from. I’m sympathetic. Like I said most of us are very sensitive to this stuff and we should be. Tell you what… I’ll wait till tomorrow to comment on it again. Let’s see what UD Police say and when or if Townsend responses (if necessary)

  15. Dorian Gray says:

Wait, wait… I was nearly bamboozled. The update that’s linked says that the University and UD Police have completed the investigation. They have a fucking photo of those balloon lantern things hanging from the same spot yesterday.

A few conspiracy theorists are calling it a “cover-up” because the university doesn’t want “an uproar on campus.”

Come on, Cass! Don’t make yourself look ridiculous.

  16. c'est la vie says:

Anonymous doesn’t have a valid point. I didn’t see Townsend’s statement earlier. It appears it was posted last night, likely immediately after officials from the university reported “what are believed to be three nooses hanging from a tree…” Townsend was only reacting to official communication. The message from UD’s acting president added, “Such cowardly and reprehensible acts are clearly designed to intimidate and frighten, and they are unacceptable on our campus.” Townsend didn’t “jump in” too soon. In fact, I appreciate his immediate response. It wasn’t until early this morning that police announced it wasn’t a racist display. But, the reaction of officials, students and the community is still justified and should be discussed.

  17. Dorian Gray says:

Well, since they were all proven wrong, yeah, I’d say it was too soon.

By the way, who appreciates the quickest wrong answer?

I’m at a complete loss as to how to even have a discussion with you people sometimes… Rather than coming up with some wild spin about why or how the wrong answer was really the right answer, just fucking clarify, explain it, and move on.

You fucking people could ruin wet dream.

  18. Dorian Gray says:

It’s just really disappointing that we hammer the other side because they just say things that “feel true” regardless of what the facts show.

We determine the thing is just a homemade clock… I mean… just a string to hang balloon lanterns, but we double down on the fucking outrage anyway because it “feels like” it’s credible.

I was lead to believe that isn’t how we rolled.

  19. Jason330 says:

I’m sure DG will find something to dislike about this Townsend statement:

“I am grateful to Acting UD President Nancy Targett for her leadership over a very difficult last 12 hours. As she states in her message to the University community, there is shared relief that it appears a hate crime did not occur on campus last night and the University police deserve great credit for working overnight to investigate the incident. That said, there remains a need for dialogue on the issues of race and diversity on campus and I look forward to coming together with students, alumni and school leadership at this afternoon’s meet-up to take part in that conversation.”

  20. Dorian Gray says:

    Of course I could, but I won’t. 🙂 It’s fine.

I guess this provides Cass the opportunity to drop her defense of the conspiracy theory as credible now as well. So that’s good.

  21. JTF says:

@Cass, so you think they weren’t lanterns? And this is an elaborate coverup? Am I on InfoWars or Del Lib?

Townsend had a knee jerk response because he was pandering. Who cares. That’s what politicians do.

  22. ben says:

If there is anything to be upset about here, it is that someone left litter in the trees and didn’t clean up properly after their event. You’d hope UD students would have more respect for their school and practice Leaving no Trace.
Im glad the school is sensitive to hate-crime related events. If something happens for real, and lets hope it doesnt, we know the response will be swift and decisive.

  23. Dorian Gray says:

So now it’s a litter outrage. And being the fastest to be wrong is good, because if it happens for real you’ll be on it. I have to say, this is why your arguments get labelled as unserious. As somebody who has marched in the streets for racial equality I’m embarrassed.

(If I missed the sarcasm I apologise in advance.)

  27. ben says:

DG, I was being mostly sarcastic. All the litter around Newark that results form back-to-school partying IS a peeve of mine, but mostly sarcasm. Nothing of note has actually occurred here.

There is a need for discussion, but not a need to jump the issue and fuel the fire, just to be in the limelight.

  29. pandora says:

“There is a need for discussion, but not a need to jump the issue and fuel the fire, just to be in the limelight.”

You know, I hear this “there is a need for a discussion” comment a lot. What I rarely hear is the people saying this start/or add to the discussion. So here’s where I’m at: Anonymous, start the discussion. When you do I’ll rescue your comment and create a post. Thanks.

  30. Anonymous says:

Oh, please create the post. I wouldn’t want to make an idiot of myself;)

  31. pandora says:

I’m sincerely interested. I keep hearing this phrase, but I don’t ever hear the discussion. Seriously, spell out your discussion. Thanks.

  32. Bryan Townsend has now announced his campaign team, headed by Erik Raser-Schramm and Brian Boyle:

“Newark, DE – Delaware State Senator Bryan Townsend today announced his congressional campaign team, led by Campaign Chair Erik Raser-Schramm and Campaign Manager Brian Boyle.

Raser-Schramm was Chief of Staff to former Speaker Bob Gilligan and previously has served as New Castle County Democratic Committee Chair. In 2012 he was Director of the Delaware Democratic Party’s Coordinated Campaign and in 2014 was the Party’s Campaign Chair. Raser-Schramm also served as Field Director for Delaware’s Marriage Equality campaign.

Boyle brings significant management experience to the Townsend for Congress campaign. For the past eighteen months he has served as Executive Director of the Delaware Democratic Party. He previously served as campaign manager for the Delaware Repeal Project and for Mitch Crane’s 2012 campaign for Insurance Commissioner.

“We are building a campaign to win by bringing together people with the right experience and energy,” said Raser-Schramm.

Other members of Townsend’s campaign team include:

    Katie Joseph, Treasurer

A lifelong resident of Sussex County, Katie Joseph is a school psychologist who has worked in low-income, rural schools for the last seven years. She is the wife of a fourth-generation farmer and has been a close friend of Bryan Townsend for nearly 20 years.

    Andrew Kennedy, Direct Mail Consultant

A campaign veteran with more than 30 years of experience, Andrew Kennedy counts not only Governor Jack Markell and U.S. Senator Chris Coons as clients, but also 10 sitting Members of Congress, including Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan Boyle, whose against-all-odds, underfunded 2014 primary campaign knocked off Clinton in-law and early favorite Marjorie Margolies as well as two other millionaire candidates. Kennedy Communications has won more than 80 Pollie Awards and 10 Reed Awards for excellence in ad design and political communications. A graduate of Middlebury College and Yale School of Management, Kennedy served as a congressional chief of staff and managed three winning congressional campaigns prior to specializing in direct mail.

    Scott Gale, Fundraising Consultant

Scott Gale has built the fundraising operations of 61 Democratic nominees for Congress throughout the country. Scott has also been the architect of the fundraising operations of 85 Democratic nominees for statewide offices, including Governors such as Ann Richards (Texas), Tim Kaine (Virginia), Deval Patrick (Massachusetts), Steve Beshear (Kentucky), and Tom Wolf (Pennsylvania); and U.S. Senators such as Ron Wyden (Oregon) and Bob Casey (Pennsylvania). In 2011, Scott was named Fundraiser of the Year by the American Association of Political Consultants.”

Say what you want. That’s a serious team.

  33. Anonymous says:

It has already started, Pandora. We are already discussing racial divide. The U of D had a very calm get together last night. It was students of all races coming together, arm in arm.
What I feel is a detriment moving forward, is knee jerk reactions with no further comment. That does not help the situation.
I know this might sound as a cliche, but it starts at home. Where we talk about the issues, during dinner, with our families. It starts in the schools and not just grade schools, all schools.

We have a long way to go.

  34. mediawatch says:

How come the Townsend release doesn’t mention who Boyle worked for in 2010?

  35. Dorian Gray says:

Are you suggesting that some people in this cadre of party apparatchiks and pencil pushers have pulled the old memory-hole routine with some of the details on the CV?

C’mon, mediawatch. Dish the dirt! II did notice that Mr Boyle has left out any experience prior to the Crane campaign on his LinkedIn profile. My interest is piqued…

  36. mediawatch says:

If you were a key operative in a successful campaign, wouldn’t you be more likely to mention that than working for a candidate who lost?

    ElSom,
Well, maybe that explains it. Boyle, once a loyal Chipmunk, isn’t going to trash the auditor who helped provide cover for his former mentor.

Didn’t Raser-Schramm Chair the Barney and Mayrack campaigns too?
