WHAT, that would be ridiculous!!!! What would happen to the NHL?? I’m starting a petition now!

  5. Liberal Elite says:

@p “Walker ups the ante, wants to build wall on Canadian border.”

Why not just put up a wall around Wisconsin? win-win.

  6. Jason330 says:

I saw that Walker comment. The poor Onion. They can’t keep up.

I don’t think I like the name of that mountain right there. I think I’ll shall name it something else. I don’t like the name of that tree. I don’t like the name of that bird. “I’m going to call you half squat,….and you can call me papa”.

  9. cassandra_m says:

    ^^^Today’s manufactured outrage.

When was the last time you were in Alaska? I was momentarily shocked to remember that Denali’s official name is Mt. McKinley. No one in Alaska calls that mountain by its official name. The pilots who show you the mountain when you are coming or going from Anchorage don’t call it that. And I dare you to find an Alaska cruise who will tell you that you can take the train to Mt. McKinley from Anchorage.

  10. Delaware Dem says:

If Obama were truly the fascist tyrant they depict him to be, he would have renamed it after himself.

  11. Jason330 says:

I wish he had. I’d have loved to hear Hannity braying “mount Obama!”

  12. fightingbluehen says:

I think It’s a joke. Is this the Presidents idea of making a grand entrance into Alaska or something? What’s this have to do with anything? This is just an attention grabber and wind up. They just want to lure some Republican into accusing Obama of overturning and act of Congress( which he did), and then everyone will jump all over the issue, and the Republicans will probably come out looking petty and uncaring.

  13. Delaware Dem says:

Shows how ignorant you are on this issue. There has been a debate raging for decades, if not more, on changing the name. The Federal Government has received petition after petition to change it, from Alaska residents and Native Americans. Indeed, Alaskans call it Mt. Denali.

Further, Republicans do not need the President baiting them into a trap to appear petty and uncaring. You guys idle at petty and uncaring.

  14. fightingbluehen says:

    @DelawareDem

How am I ignorant on the issue? Are you saying that it wasn’t an Act of Congress that changed the name of the mountain in the first place?

I’m not all that unfamiliar with mountaineering, and I’ve always heard most climbers and skiers refer to the actual mountain as Mt. McKinley in the Denali national park. Does it matter anyway?

  15. fightingbluehen says:

Maybe Obama should change the name of Mt Rushmore back to the Six Grandfathers. Rushmore is just the name of some lawyer who decided to name the mountain after himself.

  16. fightingbluehen says:

Why stop there? The Native Americans had different names for all kinds of geographical locations as well as flora and fauna. Let’s change everything back to the aboriginal nomenclature. Let’s not forget Britain either… those damned Romans changed it all up.

  17. anon says:

I’d be willing to let the mountain name go if the native Alaskans would agree to stop hunting whales and polar bears to make fucking trinkets.

  18. Anonymous says:

DD has written numerous articles on this very subject.

  19. bobsmith6019 says:

The only reason why I’m against the name change is because President McKinley was assassinated. If President Obama really wanted a truly lasting legacy with the Native American people, force the owner of the Washing Redskins to change their name, or give the Black Hills back to the Great Sioux Nation.

  20. SussexAnon says:

“Are you saying that it wasn’t an Act of Congress that changed the name of the mountain in the first place?”

In 1917 Mount McKinley National Park was created. In 1980, it was combined with the Denali National Monument and called it the Denali National Park and Preserve through an Act of Congress.

  21. Jason330 says:

I’d be more impressed with FBH and Obama haters here if they just said, “I hate Obama and he did (_X_), therefor I hate (_X_).”

That level of forthrightness and clarity would mean something to me.

    Another PC moment.

If you are bagging this peak, you are calling it Denali. Just like all of the people who live there. But if it didn’t matter, WTF are you doing here whinging about it? Other than Fox news is whinging about it today.

  24. Dave says:

It’s not just climbers. West of the Rockies no refers to the mountain as “McKinley.” It’s always been Denali. It will always be Denali, because that’s what we’ve always called it. Since I went West when I was 20, I’m not sure I ever learned any other name for the mountain. It may have come up in geography, but that doesn’t mean I was paying attention.

The name was given in 1896 by William Dickey a gold prospector, who when asked why he named after McKinley he replied (I’m quoting the New York Sun, not Dickey) “the verbal bludgeoning he had received from free silver partisans had inspired him to retaliate with the name of the gold standard champion.” It was never intended to honor McKinley, who may not have ever stepped foot in Alaska, much less on Denali.

So, some nobody picked a name out of spite and we have to live with it because ‘Murica? But of course if I were to be looking for creeping socialism, I’m pretty sure this blatant act would fit the bill.

@FBH “Are you saying that it wasn’t an Act of Congress that changed the name of the mountain in the first place?”

That is correct. There was no overt act of Congress that assigned the name “McKinley” to Denali. Congress merely formally recognized the name in establishing the national park. The Interior Department (Board on Geographic Names)(USGS) (part of the ahem…Executive Branch) has the authority to resolve any and all geographic naming disputes. So good ol’ Bill Dickey came up with the name Mount McKinley because he was Bill Dickey and no one asked the Alaskans (who were mostly native, so obviously even if someone had a thought about asking, they would not have asked the natives).

By the way any person or organization can request the Board to render formal decisions on new names and proposed name changes. So if you don’t like the name your street, have at it!

  25. Dave says:

Besides the name “Denali” sounds formidable, just Denali itself.

“McKinley”? Sounds like it should be the name of some pond in Millsboro or Seaford.

  26. pandora says:

““McKinley”? Sounds like it should be the name of some pond in Millsboro or Seaford.”

    LOL! I’m dying here!

  27. Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

Wonder where the impetus for the name change came from. What’s good for GM is good for America!

  28. anon says:

I think we should ask Chip Flowers what he called the mountain when he was there.

  29. Liberal Elite says:

I think that Obama should name the highest point in Ohio “Mt. McKinley” or perhaps “McKinley Hill”. That would shut them all up real fast. Too bad for Charles D. Campbell…
