Bernie Sanders packs thousands into a Denver gymnasium

Filed in National by on June 25, 2015

Sanders is catching fire.

I don’t think Sander-mania is anti-Hillary mania. The 5,000 in Denver may be his ceiling in Denver – a city of 650,000.

However, the excitement of those 5,000 is telling. Democrats want to hear DEMOCRATS make the case for DEMOCRATIC governance. That much is clear. There is a thirst in the country for a left of center candidate willing to address the major problems facing this country, all of which twine together in Bernie Sanders’ message that the billionaire class is ass-rapeing this country into oblivion.

I don’t think Ms. Clinton can make that argument, so I’d like to see her pick Sanders as a running mate. Short of that she needs to lay a Sanders style beating on the billionaire class – and soon. Because there is one thing Democrats like myself know about Hillary and it is something we try not to think about. She is not very likeable. If the GOP nominates a likeable bullshitter we all know what could happen. Clinton is going to have to harness some progressive mojo, or it could be unsettlingly close on election day.

Bernie Sanders, who’s emerged as Hillary Rodham Clinton’s chief rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, drew an estimated crowd of more than 5,000 people to the University of Denver on Saturday night for what appeared to be one of the largest political rallies of the 2016 cycle.

Sanders, the self-described democratic socialist senator from Vermont, delivered a fiery speech in a packed university gymnasium, where he decried the greed of the billionaire class, saying it is “destroying this nation.” Besides the more than 3,000 people in the gym, others listened in an adjacent atrium.

Don’t agree about the power of the “likeable bullshitter”, America will probably be in Won’t Get Fooled Again mode in 2016. I assume you mean Walker as the bullshitter in question and it will not sell. As for Hilary she’s tough, determined and very intelligent even if she’s not a progressive. Love Bernie to death but I agree crowd size has probably hit the limit, but if he can drag Hilary to the left his mission is accomplished.

Walker and Jeb are the biggest threats. Hilary is tough, determined and very intelligent, but the “who would you like to have a beer with?” question accounts for 20% of the votes in any Presidential election*.

My calm is rooted in the fact that I’m sure Team Clinton knows that.

Walker is unelectable; he has said and done things on abortion that make Todd Akin sound like Margaret Sanger. The one to worry about is Rubio, who is a likeable bullshitter, and also is young and Hispanic enough to look like the future against Hillary, who will look like the past. He’s as much a dolt as most of the field, but he has a sugar daddy — former Eagles owner (and former most hated man in the Delaware Valley) Norman Braman, so he’ll stay in the race to the end.

@j “so I’d like to see her pick Sanders as a running mate.”

And I was hoping for Bill.

    …but not a bad choice.

It may turn into a weekend at Bernie’s type deal. Old Bernie isn’t looking well.

God, I hope he is the nominee.

IMO Sanders has the one thing in spades that Hilary lacks, authenticity. People are starving for it. She needs him or someone like him as a running mate.
It will ring hollow if she rails against the billionaire class when Bill has spent the past 8 years trotting around the globe for all appearances trying to become one of them.

I can’t help but wonder if good ol Bernie is the white version of Obama….when Obama was you know…a socialist that railed against the banks and the system….

My skeptical hat is on…Maybe it’s the picture of a Church over looking a dilapidated City of Wilmington
