Mayor Williams Holds Another Town Meeting

Filed in Delaware by on May 18, 2015

This one is tomorrow, Tuesday May 19th at P.S. duPont. Please come out to ask the Mayor about the status of implementing the Wilmington Public Safety Strategies Commission recommendations (some of these recommendations are largely in line with President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing report. Or just ask him about the political agendas that are somehow more proactive about the safety of Wilmingtonians than his own plan is. Handcuffs are optional for this event, but if you got ’em, wear ’em!

One thing to listen for are the talking points being pushed by Williams (reported by Kevin Kelley) and his enablers meant to smear at least one of the police consultants used by the WPSSC to produce its report. At the Woodlawn meeting, Williams made a bunch of scurrilous claims about Howard Safir — President of Vigilant Solutions and one of the consultants on this project. In a nutshell, the talking points tell you that there were several high profile brutalizations of black men when Safir was NYPD Chief. And that somehow these awful events somehow negate any expertise Safir might have in running a police department.

You can tell that they are sweating it when this is what gets floated as a response. There are more than 100 recommendations in that report and the thing they can engage on is a misrepresentation of Safir’s career. And Safir and his group were responsible for a section of this report, certainly not all of it. Which all of this criticism of Safir does not know. But at the end of the day, Safir is back in NY and we are all here trying to get the attention of an Administration who apparently only listens to his worst enablers.

Apparently Williams will have crime statistics with him Tuesday night — which indicates that he wants to make a case for Operation Disrupt. Operation Disrupt isn’t a focus of the report, except to note that it is not a sustainable effort and that with the graduation of the Academy class, the patrol division should be increased. So stop the high tempo of Operation Disrupt and replace it with more officers on patrol throughout the day. Make sense to me. But then while Operation Disrupt has been in operation, 3 people have been shot dead within 4 blocks of my house since Easter. There are still more than 100 recommendations that need to be addressed. Ask him when he’ll mount up an Operation Disrupt for those.

I’m really hoping I get back from downstate in time to get to this meeting. I’m curious, what recommendations has the mayor agreed with from the report?

  2. cassandra_m says:

He hasn’t publicly agreed to any at this point.

  3. DEvoter302 says:

Mayor Williams and the Dangling Handcuffs play a mean cover of Marley and the Wailer’s Exodus.

I’m going to amend my answer to AQC — Bud Freel changed the budget to add in money for an Academy for the next fiscal year and money for more people to monitor the cameras at Downtown Visions. He also added in funds for an assessment of the current cameras — condition, technology, deployment strategy, oversight methodology and communication with the WPD. Apparently the Williams Administration won’t object to these adds.

My favorite part of the Delaware Online coverage is where the Mayor’s spokeswoman points out that “this is likely to be the last of a series of town hall meetings Williams will host.” Great.

  6. cassandra_m says:

Not a surprise, really. His team is pretty surprised that their authoritarian messaging never gets them the last word or makes them look any better.

There’s a Where’s Williams? Facebook page who will try to hunt him down though.

BREAKING NEWS: Cassandra will be on today’s Al Mascitti Show following the 10 am news! Al and I will be talking her great ‘siege mentality’ piece with her.
    1150 AM or 101.7 FM.

  8. Jason330 says:

Listening to Al and El Som now.

  9. I’m pretty sure that our interview with Cassandra will be rebroadcast on the Memorial Day ‘Best of Al’ show, Monday, May 25, somewhere between 9 and 12 noon.

  10. AQC says:

So far the town hall has consisted of Economic Development telling us they have a plan (not what it is), L and I is going to start getting out of their cars and Parks and Rec is doing summer programs.

  11. AQC says:

Neighborhood development is working with neighborhoods and department heads. They’re going to do resource fairs in the summer.

  12. AQC says:

Public Works has initiatives with utilities and they’re looking at a big upcoming project that we will hear more about in the future. Planning Dept is looking at how to deal with vacant properties and they’re involved in coordinating with Parks and Rec. going to improve fountains in town.

  13. AQC says:

I can’t keep going. So far, smoke and mirrors.

  14. Geezer says:

That’s not a town hall meeting, that’s a news conference. This administration still doesn’t know the difference.

  15. LeBay says:

That’s not a town hall meeting, that’s a news conference. This administration still doesn’t know the difference.

Exactly. And if you challenge this administration, they will lash out at you, just like their buddies in the County.
