Bernie August should become a Democrat and primary Tom Carper

Filed in National by on May 13, 2015

Bernie August would lose a Democratic primary to Tom Carper, but that’s not the point.

The Democratic Party needs the moral leadership of the Green Party people who have left the Party in disgust. Do I blame them for leaving? Hell no! The Democratic Party, particularly the Delaware Democratic Party is a festering shit hole of corporatist functionaires. And yet the Democratic Party is the only viable counterweight to its own wrongheadedness.

If not to win, why run? That’s a legitimate questions, but I think a primary challenge from the left could help bring the discussion of income inequality back home to Delaware. It could make Carper account for his Republican voting record, and put issues from the environment to women’s health in play.

Tom Carper’s utter contempt for the party of Truman, Kennedy and FDR is well known, and on constant display. If he is not primaried, it could very well reveal our contempt for democracy.

  1. Delaware Dem says:

I’d vote for him in a hard beat as a Democrat.

And even better… all my “Vote Bernie” swag can be used.

Carper wouldn’t show up for the debates. I don’t know much about Bernie, but a articulate Democrat speaking up for the 99% would devastate Carper in a public debate and reduce him to a stammering pile of word salad. I mean, you already know everything Carper is going to say, so an opponent could be well-prepared. Carper’s stump speech, should he ever be forced to give one, is straight from Third Way white papers, and effective rebuttals are already well known.

Carper will only be defeated by Father Time. That is why we have to focus on defeating Carper’s chosen successor, whoever that may be. Keeping Sean Barney out of statewide office was a good start.

  4. puck says:

Carper also has a mean streak that would definitely come out under pressure in a good debate.

  5. bamboozer says:

I agree, Tom TPP Carper probably would not debate Bernie. But I’d love to see Bernie as an active Dem.

  6. Norinda says:

This could only be merely possible by putting at least 3 or more Credible Candidates in a Primary Race.

  7. Calvin Sparks says:

Seriously, if nobody else is going to give Carper a good leftist primary, then I may have to take the bull by the horns and do it my damn self. I would probably lose, but to hell with it anyways, it would bring progressive policies into the conversation here in Delaware, and carper would definately have to account for his republican esque voting record. I have big dreams, and even bigger Kahunas. Sparks for U.S. Senate 2018.
