(Late) Friday Open Thread [5.1.15]

Happy May Day! To commemorate this day of Freedom Keepers everywhere (the real ones, not the fake teajhadi ones), take a listen to a new verse of the Internationale written and sung by the incomparable Billy Bragg:

And what the heck is going on in Rehoboth Beach? Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats has plans to revitalize their space and the zoning board in Rehoboth turned down their variance. Because they would invite too many people to that part of downtown Rehoboth, even though the plans call for fewer restaurant seats than they have now. And one of the Zoning Board members invited Dogfish Head to move to another town. That’s some economic development plan, right there. To be fair, I’ve never been to this venue, so maybe there are issues. But I can’t imagine a town asking Dogfish Head to just leave.

Board member Clif Hilderley was skeptical of the plan, saying it was strictly based on economic factors.

“You want to expand downtown where it is already crowded?” he asked.

Hilderley said Dogfish should look outside of town if they want to expand as much as they are asking for.

“It’s not a place to expand a restaurant,” he said.

“This isn’t to get more people in the building. This is to make a better experience,” Benz replied.

So who knows what is going on here?

The speculation on what is going on with Beau Biden has reached the pages of dKos. The short story is that they don’t know, either.

    Thanks for that.

Stand up, all victims of oppression
For the tyrants fear your might
Don’t cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing, if you have no rights
    Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall
    Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all

    So come brothers and sisters
    For the struggle carries on
    The internationale
    Unites the world in song
    So comrades come rally
For this is the time and place
    The international ideal
    Unites the human race

The City doesn’t like Dogfish Head. There is some bad blood that goes back a few years with other events and a proposed business venture.

There is a rising tide of “why don’t you just go away and leave us property owners alone.” in town now. (moreso than before) They don’t like renters, business, citizens parking on their streets, bikes on the boardwalk (or in their town, for that matter*). The town is filled with “get off my lawn” types from elsewhere that think a $1.6m buy in should mean solitude and serentity.

The new motto is going to be “Welcome to Rehoboth, sit down and shut the fuck up.”

*The town isn’t exactly enthralled with the Governers Bike Path through Gordon’s Pond because it put more cyclists riding in town.

Oh the evening looks iffy with weather….why not just c’mon down or up to the EVERETT THEATRE on Main Street in Middletown and catch CASA BLANCA on the BIG SCREEN in the historic theatre for a whopping 5 bucks all seats!!!

    Box office opens 6:45pm
    Showtime 7:30pm

Same drill Saturday night too…then back it goes……..!!!!

  4. I’ve been to the Dogfish Brew Pub in Rehoboth. Why they wouldn’t want the pub to expand is beyond me. Real nice laid-back vibe, usually some good beneath-the-radar music playing on weekends.

There are some things I don’t understand. Opposition to expansion at Dogfish is one of them. Hey, Sam, I’ve got one word for you: Claymont.

Dogfish was part of the influx that ” saved downtown ” IMHO. All those years ago when I first met Sam when he blew into town, and rescued a property that was a blight on the town and destined for foreclosure or more police intervention. How soon Cooper and the town want to forget and roll the clock back to 1950 now that they are economically  prosperous. sound familiar?

  6. Here’s the other thing about Dogfish. They partner with pretty much everybody. Great for Delaware, they give, not just take. I. Just. Don’t. Get. This.

I saw Beau Biden in a North Wilmington restaurant last month. He did not look good at all- I don’t know if he was on vacation, but it was a Wednesday and he clearly hadn’t shaved for days, and looked very thin and haggard. It also appeared as though his right arm wasn’t working very well. I hope he’s ok for the sake of his family.

Crazy to hear that RB DOESNOT want bikes. Bikes are the only sensible way to get around now.

Here we go…..Telsa will stomp Bloom Energy. Another waste of the taxpayers money. That’s a fact, Jack! Thanks a bunch.

  10. SussexAnon says:

They were all set to ban bikes on the boardwalk or cut the hours back until some old established bike business’ in town stepped up and stopped it.

  11. Hmm says:

I bikes the Gordon pond Trail for the first time a few weeks ago. Really an amazing Trail and great scenery. They could really pull in folks just to ride that Trail. Also it’s been proven that folks who are using bikes to get around are more likely to spend their money at local businesses than those who drive. This City Council seems to have a peculiar school of thought on economic development.

  12. Jason330 says:

The Junction and Breakwater trail connecting Lewes and RB is a gem too. The town of Rehoboth needs to finish the last 50 feet of that trail getting bikers safely from Church Street onto Rehoboth Ave and across the canal. It would take a little money and brainpower though, so I’m not hopeful.
