It’s just straight up racism at this point

Filed in National by on April 21, 2015

There is no other explanation. Republican Senators are racist and that is why they refuse to confirm this overly qualified Attorney General nominee. You disagree? Well then you call the Republicans to prove me wrong and confirm her.

Eugene Robinson’s take on the stalled confirmation of Loretta Lynch:

In a sane world, the Republican-led Senate would have confirmed Loretta Lynch as attorney general months ago. But sanity hasn’t been seen around here in some time. No one has raised the slightest question about Lynch’s qualifications. No one disputes that she has been a tough, effective U.S. attorney and a strong manager. No one doubts she is fully capable of serving as the nation’s top law enforcement official — or fails to appreciate the importance of the job […]

I would prefer to believe that what’s at work here is neither racism nor sexism but a continuation of the self-destructive political gamesmanship that Republicans prefer over actual governance. McConnell keeps promising to bring Lynch’s name to the floor one of these days, and she needs only a handful of GOP votes to win confirmation. [DD: And she has them] At present, she seems likely to get them — but there is little margin for error.

The thing is, many Republican senators actually like Lynch but won’t vote for her. Unless, perhaps, Obama denounces his own nominee.

It’s racism Eugene. Stop being so polite.

Yes it is probably racism, but not towards Ms. Lynch. It’s towards the President. Would they have readily approved a white woman? Nah, they would still give her a hard time, because you know, Obama.

  2. ben says:

Hillary should nominate her on day 1.

  3. fightingbluehen says:

    1. Yeah, it has to be racism.
    2. What else could it be?
    3. Derp, derp.

  4. Delaware Dem says:

You explain how Lynch is unqualified then, FBH? What is the basis of Republican objections to her qualifications?

    Are there any?

  5. Delaware Dem says:

If she is qualified, then you vote her in. That is the standard you Republicans set for yourselves during the Bush Era. If that standard is good enough for you, it is good enough for us. Confirm her or you are a racist.

  6. Jason330 says:

They had a chance to confirm her while Dems were still in the majority, but Tom Carper said that Republicans are responsible and trusted partners in governance.

Also – It seems Mitch McConnell is trying to reverse engineer this dysfunction to play as “retribution” or some bullshit. The media (naturally) is eating it up.

  7. Geezer says:

I used to think Carper was a dildo, but I can’t figure out where you’d put the batteries.

  8. pandora says:

Yep, they are racists and sexists. I’m done dancing around those terms when it comes to them. Don’t hold your breath waiting for an explanation from FBH.

  9. Geezer says:

Wayne LaPierre made it plain the other day when he said that one “demographically significant” president was enough. White men only, please.

  10. fightingbluehen says:

If you believe that the Senate is stalling on Loretta Lynch’s nomination because she is a woman, and a person of color, then reasonable people can’t take you seriously.

The Republicans for the most part don’t agree with the actions or inactions Eric Holder has taken with regard to the rule of law. Lynch is an adviser to Eric Holder and seems to hold the same positions on these legal matters.

Why would they want to confirm her?

  11. pandora says:

Not one fact in FBH’s “explanation”.

  12. Geezer says:

“The Republicans for the most part don’t agree with the actions or inactions Eric Holder has taken with regard to the rule of law.”

So what? They lost the election, they don’t get to pick the attorney general. You people really don’t understand how democracy works.

  13. Jason330 says:

Not one fact and makes no internal sense. They don’t like Eric Holder, so the plan is to keep him on as AG. BRILLIANT!

  14. Dorian Gray says:

That entire premise is complete nonsense. Since when is policy disagreement grounds for not confirming a cabinet secretary?

I must say though I do enjoy when somebody says something incredible stupid but really thinks it makes sense. It confirms my suspicions…

  15. ben says:

I wish they had the guts to just admit their racism. It’s bad enough they are bigots…. but they are cowards about it on top of that.

  16. Delaware Dem says:

This racist charge has worked. The Republicans have caved on the Human Trafficking bill, preserving the Hyde Amendment language but not expanding it like they wanted to. That bill will go to a vote and then Lynch will get a vote. Both will pass.

  17. liberalgeek says:

One could also allow that the Senators them selves aren’t racist, but that their masters (Republican primary voters) are. Perhaps that is what FBH is suggesting. (hey, I’m in a charitable mood)

That Hill link is a classic “Republicans Cave Once Again” story. I love it.
