“The Sodomite Suppression Act” gives everyone a glimpse of what Republican rule would look like

Filed in National by on March 26, 2015

The California ballot initiative system is a progressive direct democracy plebiscite. However, it allows everyday Republicans with deranged views nurtured by the GOP noise machine to propose crackpot shit such as the “The Sodomite Suppression Act”. This initiative, if enacted, would call on all Godly Californians to kill homosexuals. As such, the initiative is a tidy glimpse into the mind of the modern Republican. It also gives us a view of what complete GOP control of the government might look like.

“The abominable crime against nature known as buggery, called also sodomy, is a monstrous evil that Almighty God, giver of freedom and liberty, commands us to suppress on pain of our utter destruction even as he overthrew Sodom and Gomorrha,” it begins.

“Seeing that it is better that offenders should die rather than that all of us should be killed by God’s just wrath against us for the folly of tolerating-wickedness in our midst, the People of California wisely command, in the fear of God, that any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification be put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method,” the proposal continues.

I actually had to Google this because I thought it was a joke. But nope, it’s not.

  2. pandora says:

BTW, so much for all that hate the sin, love the sinner stuff. Not that anyone believed people who said that, but…

  3. Jason330 says:

Oops. Sorry about not putting in the link. And yep, you have to appreciate guys like this McLaughlin dude. He is willing to put into words what many of these maniacs go around thinking.

  4. pandora says:

I’m glad I had to Google it. It afforded me a few moments of hope that this was a joke, because “be put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method” is… is… I have no words.

  5. ben says:

A friend of mine who lives in California and follows this kind of stuff pulled McLahghlin’s address from the publicly available brief filed. (so, no illegal activity there)
He will be receiving pictures of sodomites smoochin.

  6. Delaware Dem says:

I wonder if a ballot initiative calling for murder can even be allowed to go the petition phase, let alone a vote. Because if it can, then I hereby call for a ballot initiative that requires the murder of all Republicans.

  7. mouse says:

Damn republicans are a pain in the ass

  8. Jason330 says:

“He will be receiving pictures of sodomites smoochin.”

    ^like^

  9. pandora says:

You’re gonna get yourself in trouble again, DD! Anyway, this sodomite initiative will cover most Republican men. (Now I’m in trouble)

  10. Steve Newton says:

@DD to answer your question about whether it can go to the petition phase, I was curious about that last week when I first saw this so I reached out to an attorney I know in CA. He says the Attorney General has no choice under statute but to summarize and title any proposal, but that there is a review process thereafter before it gets to the petition phase, and that it’s 99.99% sure that a judge will knock it out there as inherently unconstitutional at the Federal level. He also says that while this one has (for obvious reasons) attracted lots of attention, there’s usually a lot of stuff almost equally nutty that gets submitted every year.

@pandora you got it wrong, it’s “hate the sin, MAKE LOVE to the sinner”

  11. Tom says:

Sodomy is disgusting. That being said no one should die. Jail maybe but not death. Leave it in you liberal’s hands and pedophiles have a fast track to acceptance in the upcoming years.

  12. Delaware Dem says:

The image of you having any kind of sex at all is disgusting Tom, yet I do not ban it nor do even concern myself with it. I also find that people who say publicly that anal sex is disgusting desperately want to engage in it.

  13. Dave says:

Tom said: “Sodomy is disgusting. ”

I think chitlins are disgusting. I know this because I ate them when I was younger. Experiential knowledge is essential to making those kind of judgments. I suppose that’s why Tom is so emphatic. Perhaps it was not a top experience for him.

  14. Jason330 says:

If Dr. Ben Carson is right, and he is a Doctor, sending men to jail makes them gay.

In fact, being turned gay is part of the punishment (rehabilitation?) So…I guess I don’t see the point of sending already gay men to jail on the charge of gayness.

  15. Dave says:

I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years. Unless you have had first hand experience, most people have no idea how nutty Californians can be. Everyone knows the derogatory term “the land of fruits and nuts.” What many may not know is that Californians are quite proud of the label: http://www.mantecabulletin.com/archives/112690/

I’m an East Coaster, but there is much I miss about California.

  16. Jason330 says:

I’ve traveled there and never left without thinking, ‘Why doesn’t everyone live here?”

  17. donviti says:

I bet the wealthy love this shit. Politics has devolved into battles of morality. Meanwhile the rich get richer

    people are idiots

  18. Geezer says:

Typical fundie idiocy, along with typical Biblical illiteracy. In Hebrew interpretations — you know, the folks who wrote the Old Testament — the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was inhospitality.

  19. Dorian Gray says:

I actually would like Tom to elaborate. His argument seems like a real winner if we could just flesh it out a bit. If it’s as good as I suspect I will personally buy him a sandwich board and have him preach outside the train station. I will also hire a personal valet to wipe the foam of his mouth every 10 minutes. (Joking aside, I actually don’t think Tom knows what sodomy actually is…)

This entire thing is a publicity stunt orchestrated by an extremely ill person. There will be the requisite groaning and gawking and HuffPo click bait then it’ll all be forgotten.

  20. pandora says:

I’m telling you, these guys, like Tom, are obsessed with gay sex.

There’s a study about men who say stuff like Tom:

The study, which analyzed four separate experiments conducted in the US and Germany, provides empirical evidence to suggest that in some individuals homophobia is the external manifestation of repressed sexual desires they feel towards their own gender.

Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves, Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the University of Essex and the study’s lead author, explained.

This makes so much sense. Notice how Tom only references sodomy. He doesn’t address lesbian sex. Tom takes male gay sex (and only male gay sex) personally and emotionally… maybe because, to people like Tom, male homosexuality is personal and emotional.

  21. mouse says:

    I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Don’t hate me lol

  22. Jason330 says:

Beyond Tom’s sexual issues, his comment is a neat demonstration of how the lunatic right operates. Someone stridently stakes out a clearly ludicrous position and that opens up room for a “compromise” that is only slightly less ludicrous – but operates as “reasonable” by comparison.

We see this time and again in issue after issue. Austerity, climate change, regressive taxation, the waging of war. The right doesn’t ostracize or reject their lunatic fringe. It deftly uses them to constantly advance their various agendas.

  23. pandora says:

True, Jason. But the one common theme Republicans use is others. They are the real Americans.

    Austerity = punish poor people
    Climate Change = dirty hippies
Regressive Taxation = punish poor people
Gay Rights = sinful gay people
    Abortion/Contraception = slutty women
War = people who aren’t American and white
Immigration = people who aren’t American and white
Religious Freedom = only for Christianity
Gun Rights = only for white, non urban men

Every issue they stand on is about separating “real” Americans from those others. I don’t think we can ignore the game they play because every crazy stunt moves the conversation further to the right – using their script. We need to call this stuff out every time they attempt it. If we don’t then it becomes part of the “debate”, exactly like you said.

  24. mouse says:

I understand that the human mind can have many perspectives and personalities but at some point humanity is going to have to recognize that a certain segment of the population is mentally and morally defective and deluded by fantasy of religion or tribal dogma that makes them a threat to all of us. At some point we will have to address these people..

  25. mouse says:

Right wing hate and ignorance are disgusting. That being said no one should die. Jail maybe but not death. Leave it in your conservative hands and violent bellicose psyochpaths have a fast track to acceptance in the upcoming years.

  26. ben says:

Just out of curiosity…. is this law ONLY male/male sodomy? some states (Louisiana I think) used to define sodomy as oral sex and anal sex no matter who was participating.

  27. ben says:

Tom, please provide us with a detailed description of all the sex acts you find reprehensible. We’ll play “never have I ever”

  28. Geezer says:

    “Sodomy is disgusting.”

Picking your nose is disgusting, but I’ll bet you do it, Tom.

  29. mouse says:

Hey, not to be crude but what if 2 girls wear strap ons..And if God handn’t meant for us to eat it, he wouldn’t have made it look like a taco. Sorry..

  30. ben says:

i saw that shirt on tickld today too.
