Delaware’s “Charles Darwin Day” the first in the US

Kudos to Jack Markell. This is exactly the kind of crumb Markell is a master of tossing out to starving liberals. Nice work Gov! Now get back to the real work of governing and privatize public education, reduce the minimum wage, or figure out how to exempt millionaires from paying taxes.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell (D) has declared Feb. 12 as “Charles Darwin Day” in the state.

Praising Darwin’s theory of evolution as “the foundation of modern biology, an essential tool in understanding the development of life on earth,” Markell’s proclamation says Feb. 12 — Darwin’s birthday — “is a time to reflect and celebrate the importance of his scientific achievements.”

As Patheos notes, the proclamation was issued at the request of Chuck Dyke, a member of the Delaware Atheist Meetup group. (According to the governor’s website, any organization based in or connected to Delaware may request special recognition for a day, week or month.)

Darwin Day has been celebrated by groups in the U.S., Europe and Canada on the British naturalist’s birthday since 1980. In 2013 and 2014, then-Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.) introduced legislation to designate a national Darwin Day. Despite support from some House Democrats, the proposal never got off the ground. Former Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) made a similar attempt in 2011.

    Good poll question.
In hindsight, Bill Lee gets my vote.
Using the secret powers of 20-20 imagination, I think we can safely conclude that Lee would have been a one-term governor. A loss in the election, or the primary, would have sent Markell off to a seven-figure salary in the private sector. Lee wouldn’t have taken any crap from Christine O’Donnell, Castle would have stayed in the House in 2010 because Beau would have claimed daddy’s Senate seat as his rightful inheritance, and Carney, looking for a government job, would have gone to the Senate as Carper’s chief of staff.
After all that played out, Denn would have challenged Lee in 2012 and routed him.
So much for dreaming. I woke up before figuring out who would have been AG and Treasurer.

It’s one thing to say Markell isn’t progressive enough, but in what world has Carney given any shred of evidence that he would have been more progressive? Or even as progressive, for that matter? They may be equally as moderate-to-conservative on economic issues, but, at the very least, Markell seems more left on social issues than Carney.

    That checks out.

Just a general response to the poll. Obviously not a response to specific comments, but to the general poll and assumed perspective of some of the Carney votes.

  7. Jason330 says:

Absolutely. Labor might have liked Carney a smidge more, but I think we all know that we are talking about Bud Light vs. Miller Light.

  8. anonnaru says:

For sure. And the labor support was probably more based on background and personality than positions.

Labor support for Carney was because he was next in line — their labor positions weren’t that far apart. I am stunned that given his track record in DC that anyone is voting for Carney for Governor, really.
