WDEL to Cover Wilmington “Die In” @ 4:30

Filed in National by on December 15, 2014

This appears to be what is left for us, to die. With no apparent representation in the halls of power, our choice is to die – literally or symbolically.

We are wild about calling ourselves and our country “free.” Have you been to a football or baseball game lately? They have become nauseating exercises in self-congratulations over our great freedoms. But what are we really free from? Are we free from debt? Probably not. Are we free from being beaten or killed by cops? Are we free from anxiety? Hardly. Free from the indignity of institutionalized injustices?

We have never been less free then we are today. When the majority of Americans are not represented by a political party, inch by inch, drop by drop freedom wanes.

I was in the big march in DC Saturday then my wife and I joined in some smaller protests in the evening. We laid down in the middle on 7th and H Sts in Chinatown. It feels better doing something…

If you are in Wilmington why not come out and, you know, put you money where your mouth is, so to speak. As for me, I’ll be in the streets…

  2. Jason330 says:

Thanks for doing it DG. I know I will not be able to get to Wilmington for this, but I hope it is the beginning of something, and that I’ll have future opportunities to lay down.

  3. pandora says:

I want to be DG when I grow up. A truly admirable and interesting person.

  4. Dorian Gray says:

    Thanks… that’s very flattering… One quick story..

The funniest thing happened Saturday. We marched with a group of about 50 Occupy and Ferguson people from the White House east to Chinatown. When we stopped in the intersection of 7th and H (right near the big Chinatown arch a block from the Verizon Center, if you are familiar with DC) a young woman took the bullhorn and gave a short speech about solidarity. My wife turn toward me and said, “this is it… I think we’re going to lie down in the street…” And we did.

Eric Garner, Michael Brown… Fuck the Police and shut it down.

  5. Rachel says:

What time is the planned die-in? 4:30-6:30 is in the news…does that mean it starts at 4:30?

  6. Rachel says:

I’m trying to figure out if I can make it down there

  7. Dorian Gray says:

From what I could tell the crowds will start gathering at 4:30pm for a “die-in” at 4th and King. When it actually ‘begins’ I have no idea. Good news is WPD have announced rush hour street closures so the disruption has accomplished something already…

Also heard there may be another protest at 4th & Walnut in front of WPD HQ.

  8. J says:

There are multiple grade school with hundreds of young children in that exact vicinity. I am assuming that you have taken this into consideration?

  9. Dorian Gray says:

@J – Unfortunately I think schools dismiss well before half past 4 in the afternoon… but I hope they come out as well if they are around. One of the most poignant things about the big march on Saturday was the diversity of the crowd especially the young kids and toddlers with their parents. Ultimately this is for them. I’m a rich white man. I’m not out there for me.

  10. donviti says:

where do you park for a die in? I don’t know if I want to be caught fake dead in this part of the city when the street lights that aren’t broken come on.

  11. Doggy Day Care says:

I hear the City of Wilmington is sponsoring a “Free Doggy Pooper-upper” happening now until 4:30 pm on King Street between 8th and 4th Street. Bring your dogs and you won’t have to clean-up after them!

  12. Another Mike says:

Which schools, J? St. Peter’s is a few blocks away, but I am unfamiliar with any others.

  13. pandora says:

Elementary schools close after middle and high schools… at 3:30. Not a problem. Moving on.

  14. Get to work says:

    Unreal

  15. J says:

First State Montessori Academy, Kuumba Academy Charter, Academia Antonia Alonso. Just the ones that I am aware of.

  16. Brian says:

This is bullshit would they be doing this if a white boy beat the shit out of a black cop and got killed get over it and stop taking naps in the street you’re fucking up traffic you want to protest go out to Ferguson and fuck up the city like everyone else out there doing it in Wilmington doesn’t mean shit

  17. Get to work says:

    Who cares

  18. Dorian Gray says:

@Brian…great analogy. Right on the money. You could have also said, “I have no sense history and I am a complete imbecile.” Same difference.

  19. J says:

200 people. But I am still glad that I picked my kiddos up early from downtown and didnt have to contend with “potential, hypothetical” traffic jams… Wilmington is contending with it’s own issues. But I am sure that your jaunt here wasn’t coincidental, and that it had nothing to do with the Newsweek article. It’s laughable.

  20. Dorian Gray says:

I guess you’re writing to me? I live & work in Wilmington. I was born & reared here. I have no idea what’s funny about that… but I do know that you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about… and that’s pretty funny.

  21. SussexAnon says:

I would show up for a protest for any unarmed person is shot by police. White people are getting killed and assaulted, too.

Some of us don’t just see this as a racial thing. The militarization of the police, lack of accountability on the part of prosecutors, and “if you just do what the cop says (even if he is giving you an unlawful order) and nobody gets hurt”, and the total tin ear police have shown time after time, should be concerning to EVERYBODY.

Set it up, Brian, and I am there.
