Gambling News Not ALL Bad For Delaware

Filed in Delaware, National by on November 4, 2014

We’re attracting lots of degenerates from NJ and PA who just have to get their fill of betting on NFL games:

From the Philly Inquirer:

The total wagered on NFL games in Delaware _ with barely one-tenth the population of New Jersey _ was $31.5 million last year, more than triple the mark set in 2009, according to Vernon Kirk, the director of the Delaware Lottery. Kirk added that the state’s share was $5.2 million, with casinos and the state’s horsemen also getting a portion of the net revenues after expenses.
Hey, at least it’s good for the mom and pop businesses that offer it. Along with the casinos, who are still crying poor-mouth.
Can you imagine how much revenue could be generated here if the monopolistic NFL lost in court, and single-game betting was legalized nationally? Of course, then, every state in the union would legalize it.
Hey, sending degenerate gamblers to the poorhouse is more attractive to politicians than, you know, raising taxes to pay for stuff.

When football gambling is legalized nationwide, Delaware loses its advantage, so we’ll have a legislature that will persist in trying to balance the state budget on the backs of those degenerate gamblers … while setting up task forces every other year to study how to prop up the casinos while trying to tell taxpayers that it isn’t a bailout.

  2. Yep. It’d be great if elected officials would recognize that some of these boons to our economy ARE temporary, and, once we’ve lost the competitive advantage, it makes no sense to double down on a losing bet.

Just fold your cards and leave the table. Otherwise, the state, too, is a degenerate gambler pissing away its grubstake. Maybe those officials should call the gambling addict hotline…

El Somnambulo: The current administration CAN’T think outside the box. The only way they try to bring jobs to DE, has to be a gamble. They are already talking to Fisker AGAIN!
Bloom Energy: They went behind our backs & hid the cost in our Delmarva bills.

Honesty is not the best policy went it comes to politics. Career politicians are only out for themselves!!!

  4. I dunno. One reason why I love Elizabeth Warren is that she’s honest and, of course, happens to say stuff that many of us are thinking. That’s why she’d be an incredibly formidable candidate for Pres if she was willing to run.

Howard Dean gave us a great reason to really get involved and roll up our sleeves. Here in Delaware, so did Bryan Townsend.

Give me someone who at least has something in common with core progressive/liberal beliefs who runs ON those beliefs instead of away from them, and I betcha that a lot of people will be galvanized. Hey, we were for Obama.

But, give people a steady diet of Carper, Carney, et al, don’t be shocked if there’s no enthusiasm whatsoever. Why should there be?

The rest of the states cannot legally offer sports betting by federal law. This is actually a unique advantage that Delaware has leveraged.

I would rather not have it here since it is a crappy way to raise revenue, but it isn’t in much danger of being available in other nearby states at any time in the near future.

    This is from 2009:

“Delaware was one of four states — with Oregon, Montana and New Jersey — exempted from legislation banning sports wagering in the United States, one of the last bills sponsored by former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley, who played professional basketball before getting into politics.”

BTW – Trying to win the three game parley against the spread is a mugs game.
