Campaign mailers graded – Coons gets an A, Carney an F

Filed in National by on October 12, 2014

Facing off against nitwits who have been abandoned by their own party’s leadership, Carney or Coons could have passed on sending out campaign mailers this season, but they sent them so I’m here to grade them. The bottom line: Great job Coons. Carney, what the fuck are you running for? What office and why? I thought I knew prior to reading this piece of shit, but now I’m not sure.

First Coons – his piece is strong. On one side he is talking to hard hat wearing blue collar types which fits in with his laudable campaign theme of “Bringing manufacturing jobs back to Delaware.” In a stacked headline about the picture Coons provides the voters with basic facts: “Working hard for Delaware” is above “Democrat Chris Coons US Senator for Delaware.” Seeing the word “Democrat” gives me hope that Coons is aware of the fact that Republicans ARE the root problem in DC. That feeling is validated when I turn the piece over and read… “Chris is standing up to the Tea Party Republicans to put Delaware families first.”

I mean holy shit…right?

What’s up with Carney? Well his mailing is as slutty a mish-mash of mincing qualifications as Coons’ is direct and honorable. Where Coons identifies the problems and proposes an agenda that returns manufacturing jobs to Delaware – Carney thinks that “bipartisanship” and “compromise” with the Tea Party Republicans is the ticket.

The headline is a tidy view into his whack-a-doodle mindset. “John Carney Working Across Party Lines to Solve Problems…” How can Carney possible claim to be able to “solve” problems in DC when he does not even acknowledge that Working Across Party Lines to enable GOP zealots IS the problem?

Don’t worry – it gets worse. The first bullet point, his BIGGEST accomplishment in the body copy is: “Bringing both parties together to get results” What fucking results? Can you name one thing?

He can… Here is the result of his “bringing both parties together” – “John started a bipartisan policy group of Democrats a d Republicans who sit down regularly to find common ground on issues important to Delaware families.”

Wow. Sitting down. NICE! That’s been pretty productive. And now he wants another term to sit down with Republicans some more. Awesome!

This mailer tells me to NOT vote for John Carney. Unlike Chris Coons who actualyl sees what is going on, John Carney is clearly an idiot with no freaking idea of what is happening in the world around him.

Agree, but Coons’ commercial about fixing Obamacare was an unnecessary wet kiss to the GOP that plays right into their meme. If you are going to run on it, then run on the benefits and not the minor little things that need to be fixed. It focused on the negative and not the positive.

  2. jason330 says:

That sounds like a calculated play. The things that gets me is Carney’s worldview. Carney is trying to sell the gloomy pessimism of bipartisanship. The notion that Democrats have no answers, and we can only hope to please our GOP overlords in the hope that they allow us some crumbs. That bugs the crap out of me. I’ll vote for Bernie August before I buy into that level of Democratic nihilism.

Coons keeps sending out a promo about bipartisanship on Facebook. The picture features Coons and Rubio standing together.

  4. Jason330 says:

Jesus Christ. This post is all wet on the Coons stuff. I stand by the Carney review.

“Republicans ARE the root problem in DC”

    Why?
What is wrong with making government more efficient?
What is wrong with lowering taxes so that the middle class can keep more of their hard earned income?
What is wrong with getting the government back within its constitutionally defined limits? For that matter, what is wrong with limited government?
Why is bigger government better government?
Why can’t citizen’s be trusted to make their own decisions?

The government’s responsibility is to facilitate the success of its citizens, not to regulate & tax them into oblivion.

I will say that there are some pretty crazy Republicans out there but so are there radical left wing Liberal Democrats who also need their head examined.

Could it be that a bipartisan centrist philosophy is the real answer?

If this was actually the GOP project you might have a point. Since none of this is on the GOP agenda, all you have are talking points.

  7. jason330 says:

That sounds reasonable enough on paper, but the effects of that kind of magical thinking in the real world are disastrous. Look at the economy. Taxes have never been lower, so where are the jobs? The government has been starved of funding. Is it more efficient? Corporations have been given the power to “self regulate” – have they?

Republican economics is a sham designed to further enrich the people at the very top. I guess you are a billionaire or something to defend a system that works for such a small number of people – but most of John Carney’s constituents are not billionaires.

  8. Steve Newton says:

But Carney is so fearsome that Rose Izzo won’t even debate him at UD.

  9. mediawatch says:

As long as Coons includes the image with Rubio in his marketing, I’m saying he’s no better than and no different from Carney. The only difference is that Coons’ marketing people include Democratic talking points in their scripts. I’m not buying it.

I will agree with Jason’s assessment of the mailers — Coons gets an A, Carney an F. But please don’t ask me to believe that what the Coons team writes is what Coons will actually do.

  10. Nancy Willing says:

    Agree with MediaWatch above.

But the Carney talking points make me remember Carper’s gloating about starting the similar confabs that resulted primarily in enabling staffer Jonathon Jones’s lucrative jump to K Street.

    now google Jonathon Jones…..

  11. Andy says:

Havn’t seen either mailers but Coons makes puke with bipartisan FB posts.
All three these guys need to face primaries just to ger real Democratic issues talked about and possibly remind them what the D stands for

  12. no surprise says:

I will not be voting on the top of the ticket. That’s my protest. Neither Coons nor Carney have earned my vote but I just can’t vote Republican or Green. Aside from their Republican leanings, neither has put much effort into the rest of the ticket. Turnout is going to suck and I credit these sitting Congressional candidates with making it a lackluster midterm cycle. Aside from that, I am sick of Carney’s back-slapping across the aisle. That’s all he’s done since he got down there and it seems to be his proudest accomplishment. I want real Democrats in DC!

  13. Linda says:

Carney is trying to fashion himself as a Castle/Carper member of Congress. He’s failing to realize that the demographic and political shift of Delaware since Castle and Carper were the “Heads of State” requires a different model. Unfortunately, no one will unseat him and he’ll continue to follow their path — because he has no ability to carve his own.
