Thursday Open Thread [9.11.14]

It’s the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and there are memorials and remembrances everywhere. You can see the front pages of newspapers worldwide as printed on 9/12 from the Newseum. Here’s the NJ front page from that day:

The White House remembers those who died on 9/11:

Just one of the tasteless commercial remembrances (and I wish they’d stop too):

Then we have more tastelessness from religious conservatives blaming 9/11 on the legalization of abortion:

The messianic rabbi Jonathan Cahn went on “Sid Roth’s ‘It’s Supernatural’” last week to explain how the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade was responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11, Right Wing Watch reports. […]

“The Shemitah can also mean the fall of nation, and guess what happened in 1973?” Cahn asked. “America decides to legalize the killing of unborn children. And that year is the same year America loses its first war — Vietnam. And yet that same year, you have the World Trade Center” being completed. It is no coincidence, he argued, that the Twin Towers also fell in 2001, another year of the Shemitah. […]

The conservative anti-abortion group Priests for Life also connected 9/11 to legalized abortion in a recent video. As images of 9/11 appear on screen, the video asks viewers to “imagine if a candidate for public office said, ‘I support the right of terrorists to do what they did.’”[…]

While these crazies are lamenting a woman’s right to choose, let’s make a point of remembering those who gave their lives in a misguided war that used 9/11 as an excuse — a war that we still find ourselves cleaning up after.

The Oakland A’s won the World Series in 1973. See how it all ties together, you simpletons.

On a different note, if New Jersey can offer sports betting, apparently without federal intervention, why can’t Delaware go about doing what it wanted to do in the first place, which is offer real sports betting?

I was at an affair yesterday that featured both Claire Snyder-Hall and Ernie Lopez speaking for 10 minutes each followed by Q&A. My general assessment is that Claire has a tough row to hoe, but she does have a shot. Lopez is a very good speaker, very polished and professional, and putting his family on his literature and bringing his wife to these affairs is an effective way of sending a message without having to state it. If he was a RWNJ, I don’t think it would be as hard for Claire and she will have to connect with the voters on things that affect and matter to them to win. If I was Claire I would make sure that when I knock on doors I would find out what they care about, which may not be the same things that Claire cares about. She presents herself well and does seem to be attuned to the audience. Should be an interesting election.
