Delaware Liberal Primary Endorsements

Filed in Delaware by on September 8, 2014

Took long enough, right? We’re ready with our endorsements, after a simple vote. We did not require a unanimous decision to endorse, but I think we pretty nearly were unanimous on these. This is who your charming and knowledgeable Editors endorse for tomorrow’s primary:

Auditor — Brenda Mayrack
Treasurer –Sean Barney
SD 3 — Robert Marshall
SD 11 — Bryan Townsend
RD 10 –Sean Matthews
RD 15 — No Endorsement
RD 18 — Mike Barbieri
RD 19 — Kim Williams

Most of these are obvious, I think. And I think I’m OK in noting that most of us made a point of noting how much we really like Bill Dunn, but given Kim Williams’ effectiveness and given the head scratching way Bill got into this race, we endorsed Kim.

What do you think?

  1. AQC says:

I agree with the Marshall endorsement but I’m afraid Dorsey-Walker May pull it out. Disagree with the Sean Matthews endorsement and hope Williams has one more magic trick in his hat. Who’s running in the 15th?

  2. SJ109 says:

Also glad to see the Marshall endorsement. From my view (as a city resident) Dorsey’s not much into action on her current position and Marshall really does have a nice voting record. Wish I had seen some harder campaigning from him. We’ll see who gets to the polls…

  3. AAuen says:

Disagree completely in the 10th RD endorsement, Val should’ve gotten the 15th nod… Kim should’ve been a pretty easy choice… Unless that’s just sarcasm, why didn’t you do downstate races?

  4. cassandra_m says:

What downstate Democratic primaries did we miss?

  5. Recovering Idealist says:

31st house, 18th senate, and Sussex county council (5th?)

  6. Delaware Dem says:

The 31st House is between Ralph Taylor and Sean Lynn. The 18th Senate is between Gary Wolfe and Patrick Emory. Behind the scenes, we are discussing these races as we speak. Personally, I would go with Sean Lynn and Gary Wolfe.

I have no idea about Sussex County Council races, so I will defer to our downstate commenters.

  7. Sean Lynn is a Darryl Scott clone. Taylor is a fresh, new face that has years of proven leadership as a Dover policeman. Lynn has been prepped to be the same old, same old. Taylor knows what is going on, and has his own mind. The choice here is obvious for the 31st: Taylor!

  8. painesme says:

    Exceptional Delaware –

Not sure that being a Darryl Scott clone is a bad thing. If only we had more people like Rep. Scott.

    AAuen –

Why on earth would a liberal blog endorse Valerie Longhurst?

  9. Mr. Auen, Valerie Longhurst has been instrumental in several legislative actions that have essentially forced public schools into compliance with warped federal interference in public education. As well, she is against public transparency of school board meetings being digitally recorded for public listening. It is time for a change in that district.

  10. Mitch Crane says:

Would love to have a legislature full of “Darryl Scott clones”. He is honest. He is intelligent. He is progressive. He learns all sides of an issue before taking his positions. He is personable. He is willing to stand on principles at the risk of losing his seat. Mr. Lynn is no Darryl Scott clone, but he comes closer to being the type of legislator that Darryl is than his opponent does.

  11. Jason330 says:

Just an FYI – Simpler leads Valenzuela 71% to 29% (In nonscientific DL polling… Soon we’ll see how closely our readership tracks to GOP primary voters.)

  12. MikeM2784 says:

Valenzuela will do well, particularly in Sussex I think. What is the reason for Mayrack over Matlusky for auditor? I haven’t followed that closely but would like to hear the reasoning.

  13. liberalgeek says:

Mayrack is a no-brainer. She is smart, motivated and a great up-and-coming politician. I have worked with her several times and she has always impressed me.

Matlusky on the other hand is running an underwhelming almost non-existent campaign. As far as I can tell, he is running a vanity campaign that lacks even the bluster that is usually associated with those endeavors. He is wasting his and his family’s money.

  14. MikeM2784 says:

Interesting…I’m in Sussex and have seen stuff for Matlusky, including a hand-written note and multiple fliers, but received NOTHING from Mayrack. That is why I was inquiring….we don’t always get much attention down this way….

  15. liberalgeek says:

That is interesting. I have had the EXACT opposite experience. Weird.

  16. AAuen says:

    On the Lynn, Taylor primary:

Taylor is nothing but another conservative democrat which we don’t need in the house because god knows we don’t need another one

On the topic of Val, she is a leader in the House, you may not agree on her politics, but she supports the party, the people and the state. She is also very supportive of public education.

  17. MikeM2784 says:

It would be interesting to see if the results pan out that way, if perhaps he is targeting the southern half of the state. If he is, bad move….active democrats are certainly the minority down here.

  18. John Young says:

AAuen: Val is supportive of the destruction of public education. She blindly follows policy advice devoid of evidence. Mr. Lynn will, as publicly declared by himself, do the same thing.

  19. While I’ve seen signs for Matlusky, I’ve gotten quite a few mailers for Mayrack. Even got a robocall from…Tom Gordon. Despite that, I’m voting for her. LG put it best. One of the most impressive young leaders in the state.

I agree with Mitch. We need more Darryl Scotts. In fact, we need Darryl Scott. Hope he considers returning to the fray in the future.

  20. Alex says:

Liberalgeek:I in North Wilmington also received a handwritten note and flyer from Matlusky. He also has lots of signs up on Naamans rd. The Mayrack campaign is nonexistent

  21. John Young says:

    Mitch,

Darryl Scott is in an echo chamber on public education. Seriously. He supported the teacher prep bill, and offered strong support for the ALEC model bill, HB 165, run by Jaques. He is ardently pro-CCSS. While that is a fight worth having and points are valid on both sides, the non-progressive manner in which they were created, and adopted, was reminiscent of Politburo politics of yesteryear.

I have no dog in the he’s progressive otherwise fight, but the day he smeared a district with a bald faced lie about state mandated reserves being an unspent surplus being stockpiled rather than spent on kids is the day he lost all credibility with me.

Lynn appears to be more of the same. I’d vote Taylor if I was in the 31st.

  22. liberalgeek says:

Alex – I have seen Mayrack at least a dozen times in the last 3 months. I have seen Matlusky exactly once. He showed up to that event late and was awkward at best. His stump speech was essentially “I am running for auditor because I like to run for auditor. I will continue to run for auditor until I can no longer control my own bodily functions.” It’s not exactly verbatim, but it is true to the spirit of his speech.

If, through some strange twist of fate, he wins, we all lose.

  23. C'est la vie says:

On that hand-written letter from Matlusky, the one mailed to me was penned on butterfly-themed stationary. I can’t imagine why. It was amateurish and strange.

And I have to wonder: Did I get the letter on butterfly stationary because I’m a woman? Did he send letters to male voters on the same stationary? I have to doubt it, which is infuriating.

  24. The other point about Mayrack is that she’s running in a primary and, as such, targeting voters likely to vote in a primary. Everything I’ve seen tells me that she has been very effective in doing so. Signs in medians do not a campaign make.

Quite the contrary in a primary like this year’s. It’s a small portion of the electorate, and it’s the informed and involved electorate. The best voter ID and the best GOTV operations win, all other things being equal.

  25. C'est la vie says:

On the 31st RD: I don’t know Ralph Taylor, but I do know Sean Lynn. He is an honest, good man. Not only is Sean progressive, he has the guts and intelligence to champion liberal causes.

  26. Alex says:

Im just pointing out that Mayrack hasnt been visible at all in North Wilmington, and apparently this is the truth in an area of Sussex

  27. Geezer says:

All I needed to see on Taylor was “Dover police.” We need another cop in the legislature like Satan needs another conservative in hell.

  28. MikeM2784 says:

She missed Milford, at least my part of it….but again, I don’t particularly blame her, as it is not the Democratic base. However, she would be well served to campaign in the whole state if she goes for the general, as Wagner could be hit as the “establishment” candidate, an argument that might hold some weight with moderate Republicans in the area.

  29. hmm says:

    SIGNgate. MAYRACK IS DOOMED.

  30. Yep. I predict she only gets 68%.

Alex: Guess you missed her at the Arden Fair. She was there, along with about 10,000 others.

  31. Nuttingham says:

Takeaways – a) DL commenters put a lot of stock in signs. b) John Young will never have many friends in the legislature. c) Butterfly stationary is a thing?

  32. rustydils says:

Ahead of tomorrows Presidential speech on stamping out ISIS, the President’s foreign policy theme has been “leaked” by Rusty Dils.

The Presidents foreign policy them is” Gee Whiz, why can’t we all just get along”

  33. John Young nailed it on Darryl Scott, and Longhurst is more of the same. Sean Lynn is not the choice for the 31st. We need Taylor to get with Williams, Townsend, and the other high-stakes test haters to end this madness. I would think Liberals would be behind this, as you promote choice, and not federally mandated regurgitation of bad ideas. You all blamed Bush for this, but when Barack does it, it’s okay? Not about the party, it’s about the kids. And it’s a bad idea.

  34. Jim C. says:

Good call Geezer, I’ve known a bunch of cops over the years and not one that I would trust alone with my daughters. The stories they’d tell about the “arrestee” that fell down the stairs. I have no respect for them whatsoever! Oink, oink…
