Why Won’t Sher Valenzuela Debate?

Filed in Delaware by on August 28, 2014

This might not be a real debate, but the GOP candidates are gathering on stage in Dover on Thursday to be able to talk about their positions (no way am I calling them ideas) and field questions. Kevin Wade, Carl Smink and Ken Simpler have agreed to go, but Sher Valenzuela?

Meanwhile, treasurer candidate Sher Valenzuela has opted out of the event, with her campaign telling state GOP officials she would not feel comfortable.

So what’s up with that? Not comfortable? Seriously? And she is asking voters to put her in a job where she can’t be comfortable in a venue where the public may actually speak to her? Really?

I wonder if she is just telling us that she is not prepared. The other thing I wonder if this run isn’t basically a visibility exercise for Valenzuela, an effort to not disappear from the voter’s minds while she gets geared up for something bigger in 2016. Still, this is really disrespectful of voters — especially here in Delaware where voters expect to see you everywhere and expect you to be accessible. But Not Comfortable? When do you get comfortable talking to the people you want to vote for you?

A campaign that runs away from talking to voters AND runs away from her party’s events? Hey, I guess she did build that.

Her campaign signs say “more jobs, less government”. It’s like a vision of Chip Flowers revisited…”Jobs, Jobs, Jobs”.

Except she wants to add responsibilities to the Office. We received a mailer from her about her “plan” to fix the unclaimed property fund by: 1. Relocate the unclaimed property fund from the Dept. of Finance to the Treasurers Office. 2. Stop paying out of state firms multi- million dollar commissions to find unclaimed property. 3. Implement a commission based compensation system for returning abandoned property to its rightful owners……. So she’s running on a premise that has nothing to do with the Treasurers Office. GREAT! I wonder if she is even aware what a Treasurer does.

AND, where have we heard *this* before?

Except she wants to add responsibilities to the Office.

  4. Mitch Crane says:

Sounds like Ms. Valenzuela wants to raise our Taxes or maybe she doen not understand Unlclaimed Property. Because most large corporations are domiciled in Delaware, our State lays cliam to unclaimed property in those corporations possession-no matter where. That means all those unused dollars in all thos forgotten gift cards end up here. The income from unclaimed property is one of the largest sources of revenue state government has. The “noble” effort of finding people and returning money to them will result in a huge loss to Delaware, and taxes would have to be raised to makeup that loss–or more cuts to services.

  5. Geezer says:

Remember, she wants less government. That’s why she wants to add herself to it.

  6. Al says:

If, as you say, she’s trying to increase her visibility for a possible run at higher office, she has a strange way of doing it. It makes me wonder whether she really knows what she’s doing. Add this to the problem of her understanding of what the treasurer’s office does. The political process in Delaware seems to be getting weirder and weirder with each new election.

  7. I hear she’s sent out a mailer with Chip Flowers in a parka. “Your Tax Dollars At Work?”

    Has anyone seen it?

Hmmm, wonder who she’s trying to get to the polls…actually, I don’t.

It just might work. For the primary.

  8. In The Know says:

El Som … which proves there really are two people who take our treasurer seriously … Sher and Chip.

  9. puck says:

Is every candidate for Treasurer now competing for who will do less on the job?

  10. John says:

The problem with the “chosen” GOP candidate is ties to big corporations and a direct violation of democracy. Simpler and his family truly have amazing PR and tons of money with their global business, but they also have plenty of friends over at NewsCorp and Fox network. Do some research on “Board of Draper Holdings Trust”. Cronyism at it’s best. Corporations aren’t people. We need someone with the guts to stand up for our democracy. He certainly isn’t it.

  11. Steve Newton says:

    @john

Well it ain’t gonna be Sean Barney, either.

  12. Those lower slowers just might be so slow as to not realize that the black guy in the parka isn’t running any more.

Might? No, they are that slow.

Still a few days before my predictions (Tuesday, both here and on the Al Show at 10), but I think that Cheryl might pull it out…

  13. puck says:

Slower Lower still hasn’t figured out Obama isn’t on the ballot.

Where is the Green Party when you need a safe protest vote? At this point I would even vote for a Libertarian.

  14. Steve Newton says:

Good news for you, then, puck.

David Chandler of the Greens is a ballot-qualified candidate for State Treasurer.

He’s who I’m voting for, primarily because it is my only way to vote against ALL of the others.

  15. puck says:

Hmmm… I’ll have to weigh it. Simpler might be the better protest vote. I don’t want to see the Dem establishment rewarded for their FDS shenanigans (Flowers Derangement Syndrome) by helping Barney to office.

  16. bamboozer says:

Suggested slogan Sher Valenzuela: More jobs, less government, whiter teeth.

  17. Flowers Derangement Syndrome was pioneered by Chip Flowers, nobody else.

ES: I’ve seen it, but don’t have a copy. It’s a pretty good piece of work.
