Charlie Copeland’s DEGOP now 20% more reality-based ?

Filed in National by on July 9, 2014

After years of trying to woo Sussex County teaparty lunatics with his aw-shucks appearances at angry spittlefests, Copeland seems to have called it quits. Here is the nut-graph from Celia.

Charlie Copeland, the Republican state chair, all but conceded the party is punting on the statewide races in the hope of making gains in the future from the bottom up.

“Since 2010 the Republican Party has worked to undo the effects of a brutal and divisive primary election that wounded our party both politically and financially. At the top of the list . . . is the creation of a back bench of elected officials that can later go on to run for statewide federal and state offices,” Copeland said in a statement.

So no more waving the bloody shirt and railing against the Kenyan Usurper’s socialism from the DEGOP? I’ll believe it when I don’t see it.

The future-candidate bench down here consists of Ernie Lopez, Brian Pettyjohn, Scott Dailey, Bryan Shupe and Cindy Green – all relatively young, reasonably telegenic and conservative Christians. They’re good people, but they just don’t represent the majority of Delaware.

What Charlie forgets is the massive roadblock sitting in the way of these future candidates – the old white guys who aren’t giving up their seats until they get sent packing. Bobby Outten, Gary Simpson, Dave Wilson – they’re all in this for as long as they can draw a paycheck. Peterman and Kenton, too. That’s the going to be the GOP’s biggest image problem in the next few years.

Charlie is patient. When you live off inherited wealth you see the big picture. What I love about this is the way he gives the finger to the top of the ticket. His is literally saying “fuck it” to the idea of making nice with the nutbags.
