Election Filing Deadline Preview & Open Thread

Filed in Delaware by on July 7, 2014

The deadline for candidates to file is 12 noon Tuesday. Parties can fill slots on the ballot moving forward, and candidates can withdraw, but anyone who does not file by the deadline cannot get on the ballot w/o party support.

Questions answered:

1. Yes, the fearsome duo of Carl Smink and Rose Izzo will lead the mighty Republican ticket into battle this fall. Izzo filed on Thursday, July 3.

2. Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf will run for reelection. Not that it was ever in doubt, but he has now filed.

Unanswered Questions:

1. Will State Auditor Tom Wagner file for reelection? He hasn’t, as of yet. I predict yes, but I could be reverse black-catting you.

2.  Will Delaware’s most law-abiding legislator file for reelection? If so, will Rep. John Atkins be allowed to bring his kids with him to file?  I predict yes and yes.

3. Will announced-but-not-yet-filed State Senate candidate David Tackett follow through with his primary challenge against Sen. Bryan Townsend? I predict no.

4. What compelling human interest story (read: wacky)  candidates will file at the last minute? We’ve already got plenty this year,  but there’s always room for plenty more. In fact, can’t have too many.

Here is your source as we start the day:

Primary Candidates

General Election Candidates.

I encourage candidates and election-obsessives like myself to update as news breaks. And your comments, be they full of smink snark, or not,  are encouraged. Your chance to act sophomoric, right here in this thread!

I’ll be on the Al Mascitti Show Tuesday (or Weds.), 10-12, to wrap up the deadline news and to discuss the most interesting races. You know you want to listen, and you can, right here.

  1. Tim says:

Filing deadline is tomorrow July 8th at noon

  2. Bleep! You’re right. All of a sudden, I have calendar issues. I’ve updated the thread with the proper info.

OK, consider this a two-day thread, maybe I’ll see if I can do the Al Show on Wednesday…

  3. Jason330 says:

Not exactly breaking news, but… Questions answered: Jason330 will not be undertaking a primary challenge of John Carney. While there are important issues to raise, and a lot of good reasons for someone to offer a legitimate primary challenge to Carney from the left, I am not that person.

Short of a primary, if anyone is up for bird-dogging Carney over the next couple of months in order to try to shift the entire narrative toward income inequality and poverty, I’d be up for that.

  4. SussexWatcher says:

I wouldn’t expect Atkins to file. It may be that Brad Connor will forgo the county council race (leaving Bob Wheatley vs. Vance) and step in against Rich Collins.

  5. hmm says:

Connor is already filed for the council race.

  6. cassandra m says:

    @SussexWatcher:
I wouldn’t expect Atkins to file.

    Why not?

  7. Mitch Crane says:

    Atkins will file today.

  8. SussexWatcher says:

Well, OK, then. I suspected he’d step aside for his kids’ sake. Collins is not going to play nice – the man is a rotten bastard.

  9. Mitch Crane says:

    John Atkins has filed.

I practiced family law for over 30 years. In all those years I never saw a parent quit a paying job over a custody battle. Mr. Atkins has his supporters and his detractors. No one that I know who has seen him with his boys has ever said he was not a good father.

The voters have serious issues they want to see addressed. I am sure those in the 41st RD will choose who is best equipped to fight and deliver for them.

  10. RunCV79 says:

El Som – looks like Tom Wagner filed back on July 1.

  11. Here’s what happened today.

Rep. Mike Barbieri, one of Delaware’s best legislators, has drawn a primary from Christopher Piecuch. I know nothing about him.

Also, an R primary for…Sussex County Register of Wills. Can’t wait for the debates.

Run CV79 is right. Wagner has filed. Wasn’t sure he would.

John Atkins filed in the 41st RD. Talk about a battle of low approval ratings.

Penrose Hollins filed for reelection in the 4th NCC Councilmanic District.

I think that brings us up to date.

Al and I will do a filing countdown show tomorrow, and we’ll also preview the most interesting primaries.

  12. AQC says:

I can’t find much on Barbieri’s opponent. I know Mike welcomes a young newcomer becoming engaged in the political process, but, I see nothing to suggest he could or would do a better job than Mike. That being said, we (Mike’s team) will mount an aggressive campaign and Mike will continue to be the hard working, responsive and responsible legislator he has been. If anyone would like to contribute time or money, we would welcome either.

  13. Paul Calistro says:

I think that Chris Piechuch twitter gives you some insight to this 23 year olds political thinking. He certainly has a strong anti marijuana position.

  14. saltyindependent says:

any chance smyk gets a primary?

  15. I suppose it’s possible, Salty. There are R’s who are unhappy with Smyk. However, Don Ayotte is on the ballot as an IPOD candidate. Hopefully he siphons off enough votes to help Marie Mayor in the general election.

  16. SussexWatcher says:

Ayotte will siphon off nothing. Don’t get your hopes up.

No idea who the R challenger to Cindy Green is. That may be interesting.

  17. Jason330 says:

“Ayotte will siphon off nothing. Don’t get your hopes up.”

I happen to know Ayotte has 8 votes locked up. His determined efforts to be the real conservative in the race may push that number up to 9 or 10 by election day.

  18. Dave says:

I doubt that Smyk will be subjected to a primary. Those that are really unhappy with him are on the fringe so there just isn’t enough votes there to matter.

As far as Ayotte goes, I would imagine that he will receive as many votes as there are 9-12 Patriots who reside in his district. Ayotte’s plan is to run as often as possible for any office with the idea that even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and again. Mayor isn’t going to receive any help from Ayotte’s acorns.

  19. Geezer says:

All you Don Ayotte haters are using Saul Alinsky’s playbook to launch ad hominem attacks on the only true conservative in Delaware!

  20. Ezra Temko says:

“David L. Tackett has filed as a Democratic candidate for the 11th State Senate district.”

  21. SussexWatcher says:

The Rs have a treasurer primary, too! Sher Valenzuela, the former LG candidate, is going against Simpler.

  22. SussexWatcher says:

And Protack is running for NCC Council against Kilpatrick.

  23. Another Mike says:

Is Carl Smink really 81 years old? God bless him, I hope I reach 81, but is that the preferred age for the junior senator from our state? On the other hand, it is hard to argue with his position that only U.S. law should be used in U.S. courts, and who doesn’t want to go back to paper ballots?

  24. And Kevin “Mr. 29%” Wade has filed against Smink! Smooth as suede references to follow.

I’d be really pissed off if I was Simpler. I’m out there working and building a credible campaign, and Valenzuela files on deadline day. She has O’Donnell potential as a Party wrecker.

BTW, Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf drew a last-day primary challenge from Nelson Warren, a dairy farmer who may have an ax to grind with the State of Delaware:

    http://www.progressivedairy.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12381:names-in-the-news-nelson-warren-tony-vanderhulst-and-lane-creek-farm&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=61

Probably ruined a few House staffers’ vacation plans…

  25. There’s more. Bill Dunn, who’s treading dangerously close to Protack territory (a human punchline), has filed against freshman Rep. Kim Williams in the 19th. Williams is an outstanding first-term progressive legislator, guess I’ll be sending her some money.

And R Michael Smith is primarying Joe Miro in the 22nd. Wonder if he’s a Manolakos stand-in.

  26. cassandra_m says:

I was wondering why Valenzuela had reappeared via that brain-dead Op-ed of hers the other day in the NJ.

  27. Progressives now have some choices. Green Party candidates have filed as follows:

    Andrew Groff for US Senate
    Bernard August for US Representative
    David Chandler for State Treasurer.

It is not outside the realm of possibility that I vote for all three. August against Carney is already a lock, and I’m leaning towards Groff.

  28. AGovernor says:

Nobody filed to challenge freshman Charles Potter in the 1st. I guess the constituents are satisfied.

  29. Geezer says:

“She has O’Donnell potential as a Party wrecker.”

Don’t look for any joint appearances with Smooth Like Suede Wade.

  30. Tom says:

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks Bill Dunn is the Dems version of Mike Protack. How embarrassing.

  31. Steve Newton says:

    El Som

Please note also that David Alan McQuorqodale has filed as a Green in the 21st against Mike Ramone.

(And, oh yes, I am filed and working in the 22nd)

For kicks and grins, note also that despite actually advertising for candidates, nobody else but Will McVay filed as an R in the 32nd

  32. HoHum says:

I don’t know what’s in the water where Bill Dunn lives but he is, without a doubt, running a close 2nd to Protack.

  33. mediawatch says:

Next reapportionment, how about creating a phantom 42nd Representative District that would include the Protack and Dunn residences? Let them run against each other in perpetuity without bothering the rest of us.

  34. Jason330 says:

Celia says, “Rose Izzo is a perennial congressional candidate, who by default is escaping from the primary to the general election for the first time. ”

Is Izzo primarying Carney? Did I read that somewhere?
