Whoa! Cantor Stepping Down As House Majority Leader

Filed in National by on June 11, 2014

What a roller coaster ride. Here’s a tweet from Chris Cillizza:

Eric Cantor will announce today he is stepping down as House Majority Leader effective July 31.

So, Eric Cantor says… ‘eff you?  Any theories on why he’s stepping down?  Other than… ‘eff you – which is my deep, political insight.

Meanwhile, David Brat can’t answer basic policy questions.

Brat:  “Hey, Chuck, I thought we were just going to chat today about the celebratory aspects,” Brat said. “I’d love to go through all of this but my mind is — I love all the policy questions but I just wanted to talk about the victory ahead and I wanted to thank everybody that worked so hard on my campaign. I’m happy to take policy issues at any time, I just wanted to call out a thanks to everybody today.”

Oh, this is going to be good.

It’s hard to be the “Majority Leader” when you are a short-timer. I figured that he would step down. Yesterday was a vote of no confidence.

But that was quick, no? I’m sticking with my ‘eff you reason. 😉

Scary. If they shut down the government again and the new Tea Party Majority Leader doesn’t stop it we will go into default. GACK! Cantor was horrible but he had a few moments of sanity.

    Quick compared to what, Pandora?

This is the first time in history the majority leader lost in a primary.

It will be interesting, Cantor’s replacement will arguably be worse but will also be a back bencher. This will set off alarm bells in the business wing of the party, they fought hard to hold off the Tea Baggers and this time they lost, badly. Still, sit back and bask in the post Cantor glow, even if it does not last long.

The Democrat in the race, another professor at the same college, Jack Trammel, can point to his history of teaching Ayn Rand’s brand of economics as directed by the Cato Institute and use this slogan in his campaign, “My opponent is Brat-crap Crazy”

  7. LEJ says:

Part of his job is enforcing party discipline, which if everyone believes you are going to be the boss one day makes the job a bit easier. He has no leverage with his party, so as satisfying as it might to think it was an “EffU”, I think it is much more pragmatic than that.

Wonder if he has to switch office spaces…
