My Open Letter to ActBlue

Filed in National by on March 27, 2014

Following up on this observation that the DNC’s GOTV plan is bullshit and doomed to fail, I sent this to info@Actblue.com

Dear Act Blue,

I don’t know if this can get to anyone who makes content decisions for fundraising emails, but your “Nate Silver’s prediction” email left me flat. Like most political fundraising emails, it was all about how terrible the Republicans and Koch brothers are.

Trust me – I know how terrible Republicans and Koch brothers are. What I’d love to support are Democrats and Democratic organizations that are making a case for how great Democrats are. We have the most popular positions on all of the major issues of the day, but nobody seems interested in getting the word out. With all the crappy Dems out there, like our Senator Tom Carper who can’t stop trying to blur the line between Democrats and Republicans, I can see why the DNC’s hands are tied when trying to promote Democratic values – but why are your hands tied? Why isn’t Actbule loudly making the case that Social Security needs to be protected, that the ACA is working, that the middle class and poor continued to be victimized by the utterly failed economic policy of austerity? I frankly don’t get it.

I’ll hold onto my donation until I hear some positive message. Attract my donation to ActBlue with strongly articulated progressive values, don’t chase it with fear mongering.

Thanks,

Jason330

You don’t get the mechanics of electoral politics, Jason. ActBlue is merely (albeit a non-profit) an organization that allows people to give to campaigns and organizations. They aren’t fundraising themselves for any organization or campaign.

Give it a rest, man. The Democratic party is far ahead of where they normally are (and where many would expect them to be) nationally right now, in every area outside of Field. And the field programs are growing rapidly.

The DNC is doing great things online, the Same Old Party website and launch being one of the most recent http://www.sameoldparty.com/. There has been unified messaging coming out about continuing the fight for equal pay for equal work, regardless of wage, on the Hobby Lobby case, and the ACA as whole. I don’t think you can do more than what OFA and the DNC (and each committee) has done in the press and digitally around ACA , especially the push to the end of the month enrollment deadline.

The DNC just launched a “Factivist” campaign http://factivists.democrats.org/…they are talking about raising the minimum wage everyday.

The DDP has done little traditionally around these national releases and narratives. Big, contested states are walking step by step with the national committees. There is no problem here.

Oh lord. Every mid-term it is the same tired BS from the DNC. ( http://www.sameoldparty.com/ ) appears to be the same old scare mongering. “Vote for the Democrat, or else a Republican is going to get elected.” Very compelling !

Factivist seems to be a step in the right direction though.

  4. All I’ve gotten from the DNC are ‘sign Joe’s birthday card’, ‘have dinner with the Prez (air fare’s on us)’ and…reFRIGerator magnets.

That kind of substance-free crap is, to put it mildly, a disincentive to actively supporting the party and its candidates.

And I get shit like this in my email every day. Along with fundraising appeals from local candidates tied to stuff like the fact that it’s spring. How about at least SOMETHING on issues that matter to us? I mean, these people aren’t even trying.

Email is a base communication tool. You already have drank the kool-aid. They don’t need to message to you, just activate you.
