The Coons Doctrine: “The USA must constantly prove that we have the biggest dick”

Filed in National by on March 4, 2014

I tried to come up with a phrasing of the Coons Doctrine which captured Senator Coons’ claim that the United States must constantly demonstrate Bushian levels of breathtaking and ill-conceived belligerence on a world wide scale, or else be perceived as pussies. I think I only partially captured it.

We’ve seen this idiotic foreign policy doctrine promoted before. Usually it is territory covered by cretins like John Bolton and Dick Cheney. To hear it promoted by our blue state Democratic Senator is truly startling. Coons appears to be taking former Ct Senator Joe Lieberman as a foreign policy godfather. If it is true and Coons is guided by Lieberman on foreign policy and Carper on domestic policy – I can’t help but wonder what good he can possibly be to his Delaware constituents?

That isn’t to say that Christine O’Donnell would have been better, but at least O’Donnell would have been a one termer. Coons, being a Democrat, has a lifetime sinecure in the Senate. Let that sink in as you consider the fact that Coons laments the fact that we didn’t go to war in Syrian.

  1. Delaware Dem says:

Just because Coons looks like Dick Cheney, it doesn’t mean he should sound like him.

  2. mediawatch says:

Considering he started out as a bearded Marxist, Coons sure has gotten proficient at making right turns.

  3. Jason330 says:

The really galling part is that solidly Democratic Delaware is giving the worst elements in the GOP all the “Bi-partisan” cover they need for all of their fucking bullshit, foreign and domestic.

When Coons and Carney won, I had foolishly hoped that we were, at long last, going to be represented by at least one Democratic in DC.

…The good news is that President Obama does not appear to give a flying fuck about what war mongering maniacs like Bolton, McCain and Coons say.

  5. You know what leadership is? In part, it’s standing up to the bullying tactics of AIPAC.

My dad stopped donating to Trees for Israel when Netanyahu showed his true colors. Was always proud of him for doing that. AIPAC in no way reflects the sentiments of most Jews any more than I do.

And what, exactly, does Coons mean by ‘act’? Send someone else’s kids, fathers, mothers, etc. over there to fight for, um, what, exactly? Whatever AIPAC wants?

Gosh, I can’t believe I’m defending Coons here, but maybe I missed something … On the two responses he is quoted as having made, I’m afraid in those geographical locations, I would have to agree. One I believe is strictly related to the Central African Republic and Mali. I forgot the other one, since I saw it yesterday on this very blog where it was linked to in a comment.

But in outrage over the headline I was ready to tear him apart, then in that process of trying to figure what to say, got to his text of what he actually did say, and that was… oh. That is what the fuss is about?

I don’t think he was far off the mark. Remember, at least with sub-Saharan Africa, Coons is probably the most informed national legislator on that part of the world. And I think his observations today portray that part of the world…

I think the publication (was it Politico?) did him a disservice as is often done by Beltway news organization, where a candidate is purposefully misrepresented to keep him/her in line.

I remember WaPo headlining that Biden was prejudiced against Afro-Americans in schools. We all went… what????? When challenged WaPo edited their copy to say, that the majority (obviously some within felt otherwise) of the editorial board thought that perhaps Biden’s remarks could sound to some to be considered prejudiced against Afro-Americans in public schools…Translated, that means it was faked, and in the end, their contorted apology correctly put the blame on the pro-Hillary segment of the WaPo Board, and not the candidate trying so hard to run for President…

Ego’s are important in DC, and Politico has them as well. Often insignificant and therefore “back-lash free” candidates get fried just to send all others that message… “yeah, we’re the conservative press. do as I say..”…

Re read the article again, and see if you too feel you the reader are being manipulated to hate Chris Coons…

It was Slate. This is the headline which is pretty accurate if you read the quotes.

Democratic Senator: Crimea Crisis Is Happening Because America Looked Weak in Syria

“I frankly think this is partly a result of our perceived weakness, because of our actions in Syria.” – Chris Coons

He got a big cheer from the AIPAC audience, so who was doing the manipulating?

  8. Jason330 says:

Chris Coons’ critique of the President is only slightly more nuanced than Sarah Palin’s

Lookit, people are looking at Putin as one who wrestles bears and drills for oil…. They look at our president as one who wears mom jeans and equivocates and bloviates. We are not exercising that peace through strength that only can be brought to you courtesy of the red, white and blue, that only a strengthened United States military can do.”
