What’s wrong with bowling?

Filed in National by on January 29, 2014

That’s a rhetorical question. Everyone knows that it is the scoring. Bowling scoring is stupid. Bowling would be doing itself a huge favor if it changed the scoring to the way “Match Play” golf is scored.

It would be a 9 frame game and the winner would be the first person to win 5 frames outright, or win the most after 9.

Unlike regular bowling scoring, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of pins knocked down in 10 frames, match play scoring consists of individual frames won, halved or lost. On each frame, the most that can be gained is one point. Bowlers play as normal, counting the pins knocked down on a given frame.(There is no carry over value for strikes or spares). The bowler with the highest score on a given frame receives one point. If the bowlers tie, then the frame is halved.

You’re welcome Bowling!

PS. Anyone up for a DL bowling meetup to road test this system?

  1. Steve Newton says:

I believe the net total affect of your system would be to reduce my already awful scores of, like, 115 to . . . 4.

Yep, I’m on board with that. “Scores you can count on one hand.”

  2. Jason330 says:

I’m at around 118, so we’d have a very exciting match.

  3. liberalgeek says:

Bowling Liberally: That’s how we roll

BTW, if you want to do it in Newark, better hurry. Blue Hen Lanes has lost their lease and is closing soon.

  4. Jason330 says:

    Middletown has lanes.

  5. Camptown Lady says:

Don’t keep score at all- it will help everyone’s self-esteem.

And no more ‘beer frames’…have a water ball.

No longer should a 300 be a ‘perfect game.’ Perfection is effort, not results, so have a party if someone really tries and bowls a 122.

To raise scores, use duckpin rules for tenpins- three balls per frame.

Of course, the real reason for bowling’s demise? House bowling shoes.

  6. Jason330 says:

I don’t think lack of self-esteem is a problem among bowlers.

  7. Frank says:

While we’re at it, let’s fix the scoring of tennis also. When did “love” start to mean “I got nuthin'”? And just who was “Ad,” anyway?

  8. Jason330 says:

Agreed. Once Bowling is fixed… next on the bench, Tennis.

  9. pandora says:

Can I just watch the event? I’m with Camptown Lady when it comes to the shoes. Sacrilege!!! (and gross)

  10. Jason330 says:

Once the pitchers of beer are introduced bowling is going to fade in importance.

  11. pandora says:

Shoes never fade in importance. 😉

  12. liberalgeek says:

Real bowlers have their own shoes. Are you telling me that you can’t use this as an excuse to go shoe shopping, Pandora?

  13. pandora says:

Oh… stop messing with me, LG. You’ve seen my shoes. I ask you, do they strike (get it?) you as bowling shoes?

  14. liberalgeek says:

I’m merely suggesting that you could go shoe shopping for a specialized pair of shoes.

You could go full-on Wendy Davis:

  15. pandora says:

As much as I love Wendy Davis…I prefer these and these:

  16. puck says:

What kind of surgery do you need to wear those?

  17. Turk 184 says:

Nice kicks, but I don’t think they’d work too well at the lanes.

  18. Jason330 says:

So this DL bowling meeting up/straw poll/pitchers of beer/new bowling scoring system road test is happening. Looks like Mid County Bowling in Middletown, and the Straw Poll Question is going to be, “Who should be Delaware’s next Lt. Governor?”

So if you have an interest in liberal politics, bowling, creating buzz around your pick for Lt. Gov, or pitchers of beer – stay tuned to this thread.

I’ll be calling them to see when would be a good time to do this and how much the shoe rental is.
