The Smyrna Museum, or the Barracks, on Main Street in Smyrna. Built in 1795, it was used by the militia in the War of 1812 and was the site of the state’s first draft lottery in 1863.

Even among Delaware’s soulless small towns, Smyrna stands out as particularly soulless. There is a rambling disconnected quality to the small downtown area where streets don’t really line up with each other, and trail off into dead ends. The overall effect is of a town laid out by lazy or disaffected city fathers who couldn’t give two shits about civic engagement, and built in spastic fits and starts by distracted people who longed to be somewhere…anywhere else.
