Attorney General Eric Holder said during a speech on Tuesday night at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library that it’s time to consider setting national standards for how elections should be handled.

“A recent study by the MacArthur Foundation found that nearly 90 percent of those who voted in last month’s election would support creating national voting standards,” Holder said, according to prepared remarks.

Total agreement and long past due. Florida leads the pack but poorly run elections must end, as must the political games the Republicans are playing to make voting more difficult.

It’s a thorny issue, because the Constitution give states the right to run their own elections. The Supreme Court has found for voting as a civil right. So basically any Federal law would have to be based on civil rights. I guess it’s possible but I’m not sure how to go about it.

The same states rights argument was raised when the states were being coerced to raising the drinking age to 21. So, use that example and coerce states into meeting national voting standards.

That is Chris Coons’s FAST Voting Act.

By the way, it’s no longer enough for Coons to be bipartisan. Now he is bipartisan AND bicameral. What will he do to top that – bisexual?
