Delaware Liberal’s Holiday Extravaganza

Filed in National by on December 5, 2012

I had actually forgotten about our yearly holiday extravaganza, but, luckily, commenter Dave sent me an email asking if I could put up a post on Random Acts of Kindness performed by DL’s readership this holiday season.  Use the thread below to share your random acts of kindness (Bet you guys have some great ideas!) and to let us know if you can join us at the Extravaganza!

In keeping with tradition, please bring food for the Food Bank of Delaware.  We will be collecting the goodies and necessities and then delivering them the next day.  Let’s make someone’s season bright!

Date:  Friday, December 14th

Place:  Iron Hill Brewery (Riverfront)

Time:  7:00p.m.

As usual, be there, or be square.

Advanced apology:  I know, I know.  Another DL Wilmington event.  I’m sorry, but… but… I live here.  Seriously, I’m sorry, and I promise to try and organize an event this summer that isn’t held in New Castle County.

I’ll kick this off. I got a piece of my neighbors mail and didn’t even open it.

  2. cassandra_m says:

If you are looking for a Random Act of Kindness to participate in, Delaware runs an Adopt-A-Family program for Christmas, largely focused on children and seniors.

  3. reis says:

We’re having our own downstate DL. Open bar, lobster and caviar, Chippendales and female strippers, all paid for.

Oh; any one from New Castle, the cost is $10,000.00

  4. pandora says:

Did I mention how sorry I was, Reis.

But if you want to come – and aren’t a serial killer – we could probably find you a free room.

  5. reis says:

We’ve met at Purple Parrot pandora. I’m the extremely handsome guy? Ring a bell?

  6. liberalgeek says:

The problem with Reis’ logic is that you are considered to be “from New Castle County” if you have lived north of Dover any time in the previous 40 years.

  7. reis says:

How is that a problem? For all intents and purposes, you guys are from Pennsylvania (except for the Santorum thing).

  8. heragain says:

That’s all right, LG. If you’re native to Brandywine Hundred, Middletown is in Maryland. 😀

  9. pandora says:

Hmmm… there were so many handsome liberal guys. I might need more details, and I don’t want to guess and reveal your Clark Kent identity.

  10. Dave says:

This year I morphed my random acts into a goal/theme for 12 days of Christmas. And yeah, the first day of Christmas isn’t here yet, but I like to give myself a head start. So, on the first day of Christmas I gave a turkey to a unknown family. On the second day of Christmas I bought a tree to be given to someone who might not have one this Christmas. On the 3rd day I gave a donation to Safe Haven of Sussex County. On the 4th day I gave a donation to Toys for Tots (it’s too hard to buy a toy, so I usually just give money). I’m really striving for non-deductible things, with the thought that true charity provides no benefit for me the giver, including recognition (I can comment about it here because no one knows who I am). It’s just my way of perhaps making up for the unkind acts I’ve committed all year.

  11. reis says:

I remember Clinton’s published donations to charity including $5.00 deductible per pair of underwear, and he remained popular despite no anonymity.

  12. Pencadermom says:

@Jason, LMAO. But I hate getting my neighbors mail. They get sales books from the most expensive stores ever. Gawd, I hate neighbor envy.
I never claim my donations, personal or business, on my taxes.

At my business we collect from our customers almost every year. I have the best customers ever!! Our best year was when my husband actually got to drive the clothes, toys, and grocery store gift cards to a single mom and her kids. I think it was life changing for him. (givers always benefit!!)
I love the 12 days of Christmas idea. Dave, if you are still looking for ideas, the Friendship House of Delaware is a good one
@Pandora, I am trying to get my ‘brave’ on and come on the 14th.

  13. Liberal Elite says:

I recently gave the guy pumping gas on a cold morning at 4AM on the NJ turnpike a nice tip.

He looked surprised. I said it was for long cold nights. I thought he was going to cry…
He said “You don’t know how much I appreciate this. No one else seems to notice I’m out here freezing my ass off.”

  14. reis says:

I always tip the gas jockey at the NJTP rest stops. I though everyone did.

  15. cassandra_m says:

Today’s Random Act of Kindness opportunity is Feed A Friend Food Drive. $11.50 buys one case of food and benefits local services like: Newark Area Welfare Committee, Emmanuel Dining Room, YWCA Delaware, Sunday Breakfast Mission, St. Paul’s Church Outreach Center.

Just call WDEL this AM to make your donation!

  16. pandora says:

Thanks for that reminder, Cassandra! I had forgotten about that. You can also click on Cassandra’s link and complete your donation online. Very easy.

  17. Mongo says:

Cass, you also met me a the Purple Parrot. I was the other astonishingly handsome liberal. But I had a dog with me …

  18. cassandra_m says:

Mongo, is this for me or Pandora? (We are often mistaken for each other.) I do know you to be astonishingly handsome, though.

  19. pandora says:

    Me, too!

We are often mistaken for each other. Are we simply the females at DL?

  20. pandora says:

Oops! My last comment should have ended with 😉

  21. cassandra m says:

    What is this “simply” business?

  22. DEvoter302 says:

How many people usually attend this?

  23. Jason330 says:

    Between 2 and 200
