Dear GOP, More racially motivated voter supression efforts please.

Filed in National by on December 5, 2012

The GOP’s voter suppression efforts backfired spectacularly.

They “flipped a switch with the African American vote,” Chanelle Hardy, a vice president at the National Urban League said, rekindling whatever enthusiasm had waned after 2008’s historic Obama win.

“We’d been struggling for many years in our communities with how we make the argument that our parents and grandparents had handed down to us: ‘you must vote, because people fought and died for you to have the right to vote.’ It starts to become a little less motivating the further away you get away from those really visceral memories of what it took to get to the polls,” Hardy said. “But then you bring back a 35 state assault on our ability to vote and it starts getting really reminiscent. All of the things our parents were telling us and our grandparents were telling us become visceral to a new generation.”

I’m just kidding about wanting MORE voter suppression of course. If the GOP could figure out some other (ultimately impotent) ways to give the finger to every non-affluent, non-white person in the country though – I’d be thrilled.

This happened with the women’s vote, as well. Suddenly, the fight our mothers and grandmothers fought over reproductive rights was new again.

  2. Linda says:

This also happened with the Mexican vote too. Repubs tried to use illegal immigration as a wedge. Discrimination and racism takes on many faces and they underestimated the impact of this issue!

  3. fightingbluehen says:

How do you explain Romney getting zero votes in fifty nine voting precincts in Philly, and zero in nine precincts in Ohio? Very remarkable to say the least.

  4. Jason330 says:

Uh… 1) HE sucked. 2) I doubt your Fox News “facts” are actual real world facts.

  5. fightingbluehen says:

    Just shaking my head.

Fox news thinks you’re a chump, FBH. They feed you this BS and laugh all the way to the bank while you repeat it like a trained ape.

    Don’t whine, link.

“Fox news thinks you’re a chump, FBH. They feed you this BS and laugh all the way to the bank while you repeat it like a trained ape.”

How are they feeding me BS when I don’t watch Fox. I don’t even get my news from television.
Why don’t you just do three minutes of research and find out for yourself…….then you can refute my information instead of just using the same old ad hominem response.
BTW, Obama recieved 0 votes in some precincts in Utah apparently. Both should be scrutinized.

  9. socialistic ben says:

oh right. You don’t watch Fox (or read Fox online?) . I forgot. You just magically come to every single wrong conclusion as someone who watches Fox all the time. I keep forgetting.
It doesn’t surprise me at all the Obama got 0 votes in some places in Utah. I’m surprised there aren’t more cases of that. Perhaps if you didn’t get your news from frauds, this wouldn’t be such a shocking reality for you.
For a few days after the election, I felt bad for conservatives who were in shock….. then i woke up. You should know damn well that conservative media is emotion based wishing, and not actual reporting. If you made the decision to put your head in the sand, your current state of distress is no one’s fault but your own.

There are 66 Wards, comprising 1687 precincts, with a rough average of 300 voters per precinct. Some precincts had as few as a 113 voters. Some as high as 450. There were no wards in which Romney failed to receive some votes. I did not review the data for each precinct because is not presented in a form that makes detail analysis possible without a lot of grunt work. Still a cursory examination of the data permits the following observation.

The existence of 59 precincts out of a total of 1687 precincts in which no votes were received by Romney is simply not unusual considering the size (and probably the demographic makeup) of the precincts. If someone were sufficiently energized they could find those 59 precincts and run a correlation with various demographic statistical data to determine if it was out of the norm for those precincts. Romney received less than 15% of the vote for the entire city (ROMNEY – 91953 14.01%, OBAMA 559180 85.21%).

If the same issue were brought up about some area in Texas, perhaps someone should take interest but since it’s Philidelphia, it is just more intellectual dishonesty by the conservative entertainment conplex and those who they entertain, such as FBH.

  11. pandora says:

And there are counties that didn’t cast one vote for Obama. What should we infer from that? Because, FBH, you are inferring something.

    Also, Politfact addressed this:

CBS News took note of the shutout precincts in Cuyahoga County while reporting that Romney also received no votes in 59 voting divisions in Philadelphia.

“Incredulous Republicans might be tempted to indict voter fraud as a culprit,” the CBS story said, but “the reality is less salacious than the conspiracy theory – a consequence of demography, not electoral shenanigans. Most big cities are heavily Democratic to begin with, and geographic patterns of racial segregation may yield an even more one-sided electoral result in certain areas than in the city as a whole.”

All the Cuyahoga County precincts in which Romney was shut out are in neighborhoods with heavily African-American or Latino populations.

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll in August underlines the significance of that demographic. It showed Obama leading by a 2-to-1 margin among Hispanic voters and had his support at 94 percent among black voters, with zero percent favoring Romney. Six percent said they were undecided or had no opinion. None of the poll’s 120 black respondents picked Romney.

An election day exit poll by NBC News found that black voters in Ohio picked Obama over Romney by 96 percent to 3 percent. That percentage matches the spread by which Obama won in Cleveland precincts east of the Cuyahoga River.

All the polls were showing this coming. Oops, I forgot. Republicans had their own polls. Seriously, the districts you cite are composed almost entirely of poor minorities – a group the GOP never missed an opportunity to spit on.

  12. fightingbluehen says:

The three precincts in Utah added up to a 45 to 0 victory for Romney. The 59 precincts in Philly added up to a 19,605 to 0 to Obama. In Cleveland 15 precincts went to Obama at 5,439 to 0. In 100 precincts in Ohio Obama received 99% of the vote.
Doesn’t look like too much “voter supression”[sic] going on there. If you were a dictator in some banana republic you would be lucky to get those numbers.

  13. pandora says:

    So, this comment of yours…

BTW, Obama recieved 0 votes in some precincts in Utah apparently. Both should be scrutinized.

    … was basically bullsh*t.

    Got it.

  14. fightingbluehen says:

Yeah, I say go ahead and look into the three rural Mormon precincts in Utah that have 45 total votes as well.
Nobody would really care if there was voter fraud anyway ,so what does it matter.
I was just pointing out some facts that obviously had to come from Fox news.

  15. X Stryker says:

Fbh, go back and read Romney’s 47% comment, and then check who lives in those districts. Tax cuts for the rich, benefit cuts for the poor sounds like a pretty bad deal if you’re living in the ghetto.

  16. puck says:

FBH – remember what happened when Homey D. Clown finally met The Man? That’s basically what happened to Romney in those districts.

  17. X Stryker says:

You’re going to have to accept the fact that Romney made zero effort to appeal to voters in those districts, and in fact was pretty actively pledging to screw them over at every opportunity. Even if you’re a moderately successful business owner in the ghetto, most of your clients will be poor, and anything that hurts the poor hurts your business. Face facts – Romney was the worst candidate ever at appealing to low-income African American voters. Seriously, worst ever.

  18. John Manifold says:

Shorter FBH: If fewer blacks voted in West Philly, Romney would have gotten more votes there. (I too can’t follow the reasoning.)

Don’t celebrate for long. The right wing is persistent:
