Q: Is Cathy Cloutier Pro-Choice Or Anti-Choice? A: BOTH!

Filed in National by on October 10, 2012

Some things I simply cannot make up. I’ve written for some time that Cathy Cloutier has no core convictions or beliefs, and I’ve written that she will say anything to anybody (usually in ‘confidence’, as in ‘nudge-nudge, I’m really a Democrat’) to get their vote.

I have now discovered that Cathy Cloutier has  somehow been endorsed both by Planned Parenthood of Delaware and the virulently anti-choice A Rose and A Thorn Prayer. You can’t earn Planned Parenthood’s endorsement if you oppose choice, and you can’t earn A Rose & A Prayer’s endorsement if you support choice. (Captain Obvious.)

Let me just say that I consider this to be an ideological impossibility…unless someone responds to two different questionnaires in diametrically-opposite fashion. What? You say you don’t believe that Cloutier indeed WAS endorsed by both groups? OK, here:

http://www.pro-choicedelaware.org/assembly.html

Why do I consider it an ideological impossibility that Cloutier could be endorsed by both groups? Uh, go to the Rose/Thorn website, and you’ll find out that virtually their entire agenda consists of blasting Planned Parenthood’s agenda. Here’s but one example:

http://www.araap.org/index.php/getinformed/45-an-open-letter-to-our-legislators-refuting-planned-parenthoods-misstatements-about-hb-80

BTW, did I mention that the President of this virulently anti-choice organization is now Delaware’s Republican National Committeewoman? Yep, in a coup engineered by John Sigler and Greg Lavelle, pro-choice committeewoman Priscilla Rakestraw was ousted in favor of  Ellen Barrosse, president of A Rose and A Prayer.

Gee, I wonder which side Cloutier was on. On that day, was she the ‘Really A Democrat’ Cloutier’ or the ‘Rose and a Thorn’ Cloutier? Doesn’t matter, it’s not as if she acted on principle.

My point is simple: Whether you are pro-choice or anti-choice, you cannot believe anything that Cathy Cloutier tells you. She’s only telling you what you want to hear in order to get your vote. When the chips are down, unless you’re the NRA, she won’t be there for you. She’s earned your distrust. She. Will. Disappear.

As she should in November. She’s got her legislative pension. Time for someone to, you know, actually be a Senator and stand for something. Or at least show up.

Now THAT’S what I call “choice.” According to the Romney Rule that should be worth a three to five point pickup over her opponent.

By the way, DP is now featuring a Forbes article by Barrosse flogging the DOA Floyd McDowell health care bill as the socialist product of Markell and the Delaware Democratic establishment.

Looks like Pro-Choice Delaware listed every member of the GA on that link. I didn’t see anything that mentioned endorsements. In the voters’ guide section, both Cloutier and Counihan were 11 for 11 in taking the pro-choice position: http://www.pro-choicedelaware.org/voter_guide.php?us=none&de=none&sen_dist=5&rep_dist=none&cnty_dist=none&wilm_dist=none.

A Rose and A Prayer has indeed endorsed Cloutier. They also endorsed both candidates in two races: RD 41 (Atkins and Hastings) and SD 14 (Ennis and Moritz).

The two races Another Mike cites are from past elections.

  4. Another Mike says:

Good to see everything there is up to date.

The Rose and a Prayer endorsements (at least those at that link) are also old. Neither Dennis Williams or Robert Bovell were in the running for State Rep this cycle.

  6. Thanks, Another Mike. Just read those criteria and ask yourselves: How could A Rose and A Prayer possibly endorse Cloutier if she answered favorably to each of the Planned Parenthood questions?

C’mon, kids. Most creative answer wins a free…coveted…shoutout from Yours Truly.

  7. Cassandra, in 2010, Cloutier got both endorsements, which I consider to be ideologically impossible. She was also endorsed by Planned Parenthood back in 2006 and likely before. I remember her first senatorial campaign against Bill McGlinchey where she had Myrna Bair at our Arden polling place on Election Day misrepresenting McGlinchey’s pro-choice position. The lying goes back to the beginning.

A Rose and A Thorn only came on the scene recently. I think 2010 marked their first endorsements. And they endorsed Cloutier. As to Dennis P. Williams, well, maybe someone should ask him about that.

  8. cassandra m says:

That could be. I’m pointing out (as is Another Mike, I think) that your links don’t do much to support your narrative.

  9. Yes they do. The Rose and A Thorn link demonstrates that she was endorsed by A Rose and A Thorn in 2010. She was endorsed by Planned Parenthood in 2010. That link is not currently available at the PP site, but she was, and that’s not in dispute. She’s been endorsed by PP this year and was endorsed in previous years. I couldn’t copy and paste Mike’s link, so I encourage readers to click on it.

In other words, two groups with diametrically-opposite views on choice endorsed her in 2010. Planned Parenthood has endorsed both Cloutier and Counihan in 2012. There are no 2012 endorsements up yet at the Rose/Thorn site. If I know Cathy, she’s probably calling them up right now and begging them not to endorse her this year.

  10. cassandra m says:

OK, well, holla at us when you find the 2012 links.

  11. Another Mike provided the 2012 PP link. When/if Rose/Thorn endorses for 2012, I’ll post it. The point, though, is that, in 2010, she told PP what they wanted to hear and Rose/Thorn what they wanted to hear. It is literally impossible that she told them the same thing.

  12. John Manifold says:

Aren’t we happy that a Rose and a Prayer has a best-bud in the Mayor’s office?

  13. jenl says:

I don’t need 2012 links to see El Som’s point. You can’t have it both ways. Also, we use prior information, links, videos, etc all of the time to identify inconsistencies. This supports a narrative that I have heard about Sen Cloutier. She will tell people what they want to hear even if it directly contradicts what she has told others. There was a woman who ran against Cathy Cloutier years ago who I remember was infuriated by this behavior.

She’s not pretty enough to be Mitt Romney in drag, but she’s exactly like him “ideologically”.
