Paul Ryan Has The Cure For Poverty

Filed in National by on October 10, 2012

Rachel Maddow ran a segment on Paul Ryan getting testy with a reporter and cut through the visual to get to the meat of what happened.  Yesterday, everyone was talking about how testy Paul Ryan was, but that misses the point:

The GOP vice presidential candidate responds that “this country has a crime problem.” When the reporter asks for clarification, Ryan explains that “good, strong gun laws” are currently on the books, “but we have to make sure we enforce our laws.”

He goes on to clarify:

“We have lots of laws that aren’t being properly enforced. We need to make sure we enforce these laws. But the best thing to help prevent violent crime in the inner cities is to bring opportunity in the inner cities, is to help people get out of poverty in the inner cities, is to help teach people good discipline, good character. That is civil society. That’s what charities, and civic groups, and churches do to help one another make sure that they can realize the value in one another.”

Sound familiar?  It should.  This is simply another phrasing of Romney’s 47% statement.  Poverty exists because poor people don’t have good discipline or good character.

Your interpretation of what Paul Ryan was saying is completely inaccurate. It lacks any sort of reading comprehension and understanding of English grammar.

Paul Ryan was listing four ways to help prevent violent crime; bring opportunity; reduce poverty, teach good principles, and teach good character.

He wasn’t, as you claim, listing good discipline and character as ways to end poverty.

    oops, double post

Ryan is saying that one of the things we need to do is teach people in the inner cities good discipline, good character.

That is a fact. He is stating, quite clearly, that inner city people are missing these traits.

My reading comprehension is fine. He said he wants to teach “good character” to people in inner cities. When a reporter asks a candidate running for office about the crime problem, he’s asking what THE GOVERNMENT should do. His proper response should have been “nothing,” because as vice-president he doesn’t have the power to do a single one of the things he listed as solutions.

In short, he did what Republicans always do — blame the victims.

we know when a republican says “good character” they mean Christian teachings…. but not that crap Jesus said about helping one another… Christian values like hating gays, hating Muslims, and hating gay muslims, blaming teachers for parents’ failures, blaming poor people for not making enough money…. etc/

“we know when a republican says “good character” they mean Christian teachings”

You mean like praying at the Indian River School Board meeting? Whatever happened to that Christian of good character went there to pray?

Dave: If you’ve been following along for any length of time, you realize that Eric Bodenweiser, like many of his fellow travelers, is a seriously troubled individual. If the rumor is true, it might explain a lot of his subsequent behavior, including his highly public discovery of Jesus.

As an aside, Jesus is lousy at hide and seek. Even otherwise incompetent conservatives can find him.
