Romney Feeds His Own Negative Narrative On A Daily Basis

Filed in National by on September 28, 2012

I really have never seen anything like the Romney campaign.  Disaster is too mild a word.  If there’s a misstep to be made, Romney makes it.

And every single error, misstep, gaffe Romney makes confirms what the Obama Campaign has been saying all along. That’s why the attacks/criticisms against Romney are resonating.

Romney’s hopelessly out of touch with average people – his social awkwardness (if you haven’t seen Romney trying to get the crowd to chant his name here it is) isn’t the least bit endearing; it’s jaw-droppingly shocking.  Romney’s compassion for people resembles a profit/loss analysis – there are simply groups (a whopping 47%) of people he’s willing to write off.  And it’s funny that a man who lacks compassion for the poor is resolute about humanizing corporations.

And speaking about humanizing… Mitt Romney has never had a human moment on the campaign trail.  For that matter, neither has Ann Romney.  I caught a snippet of them on one of the morning shows.  They were asked for an example of what annoys them about the other.  I’ve been married 21 years and have thousands of personal, little stories that are unique to my relationship – my husband would claim to have millions about me.  So… what personal detail did the Romney’s share?  The old squeezing the toothpaste tale.  Now, I’m not saying that the toothpaste tale isn’t true or universal, but when they trotted it out it struck me as the safe, cliched response.  A stock answer.  And not one that personalized the couple and gave people insight into who they are.

Cassandra posted a video yesterday where Massachusetts’ politicians describe Romney as Governor.  The Governor’s office had a moat around it.  He put up a velvet rope in front of the office.  That’s quite an image.  Go watch that video and tell me that it doesn’t confirm the Romney narrative.

That’s the reason why the narrative surrounding Romney is sticking.  Because it’s true.  No matter what Dems throw at Romney, you can count on Romney proving them right.

I’m just shocked. That clip of Romney trying to get the crowd to stop chanting “RYAN!” is painful.

I’m utterly amazed that Romney has been THIS bad. He’s been working at this for years and had (has?) tons of money to throw at nailing down the easy stuff.

I wonder is Newt Gingrich is laughing or crying.

That clip sums up the Romney campaign perfectly – awkward, embarrassing, forced/fake, out of touch with the people in the crowd.

  3. socialistic ben says:

I keep wondering then the superpac tsunami is going to hit.

  4. pandora says:

The superpacs may not be “all in” for Romney. In fact, some of them seem to be turning their aim (and money) away from the Presidential race and onto Congressional races. Altho… I do think we’ll see them in mid-October

Also, there have been some complaints concerning SuperPacs inability to stay on message or to even have a consistent message. They’re like the wild west of political campaigns.

  5. socialistic ben says:

how do you not stay on message? If you are a superpac supporting a candidate, your instructions are in the stump speech and on TV appearences. Are all these conservative rich white men REALLY this stupid?

  6. pandora says:

No, the real problem is that Romney has no consistent message, so it’s every man for himself.

  7. jason330 says:

A good example of that is the fact that Romney is back to talking about Romneycare in an effort to make himself appear human.

A measure of how bad off the campaign is that the usual shrieking harpy teabagers are laying off him, perhaps out of pity.

  8. Dave says:

It is interesting that Romney, after studiously avoiding any mention of Romney care has reached the point in his campaign where he feels to need to grab whatever arrows are left in his quiver. It’s also interesting that the far right is uncharacteristically silent at his statements. One does not really need polls. You just have to follow the campaign strategy being employed.

Still, it’s only September. Isn’t it too early for desparate measures? There is still the October surprise to get through, which traditionally belongs to the incumbant right?

Again the Kool- Aide has clouded your perception of recent events. First you guys didn’t see the obvious sarcasm in Romney’s airplane window comment , and now this. The crowd was shouting Romney, Romney, and he, in his genuine generous nature was saying, “no, it’s Romney , Ryan.” People that attended the event have clarified this. This is getting pretty ridiculous.

FBH has not heard the truism: If you are explaining, you are losing.

  11. nemski says:

    What cassandra_m said.

  12. fightingbluehen says:

At least I don’t support the truism that the truth doesn’t matter. This is so typical. You people create a false narrative, and when someone attempts to clarify the truth, you say they are losing. You can keep your truism.

  13. nemski says:

False narratives? I guess FBH knows something about that.

  14. cassandra_m says:

Yes indeed. Since he is the only one here subscribing to them.

  15. fightingbluehen says:

You mean like the false narrative for why our embassy was attacked in Libya, and the fact that Obama was sticking to that false narrative even after his own people admitted that the false narrative was false.
