The Pundits Weigh in on the Clint and the Chair, etc.

Filed in National by on August 31, 2012

I still didn’t see it, but apparently it was pretty funny — at least according to my Facebook page. Here is some reaction so far:

Team Obama response:

Know Your Meme already has a great entry on Eastwooding.

Maddowblog has a great sum up: Movie star debates chair, loses.

And even if we look past the bizarre chair shtick and the rambling remarks, the points Eastwood tried to make were a mess. The actor wants to withdraw quickly from Afghanistan, which is the opposite of Romney’s position. Eastwood thinks it’s a bad idea “for attorneys to be president,” overlooking the fact that Romney has a law degree. He even felt comfortable mocking Joe Biden’s speeches, even while delivering a meandering, cringe-inducing speech of his own.

But what helped make this a truly epic convention moment was the realization among Republicans that they’d made a horrible mistake. Paul Ryan was shown on camera looking deeply uncomfortable; Romney aides were overcome with a sense of dread; and it only took a few minutes for the campaign to start telling reporters that they weren’t responsible for this train wreck.

So is this what people are talking about this morning? Laughing at Clint speaking to his chair? Not a great way to end a convention, I think.

    What a clusterf*ck. I hadn’t heard this part.

It’s a toss-up whether the funnier part of Clint Eastwood’s speech last night was the part where he mumbled at an empty chair, or the part where the Romney campaign bumped its well-produced, reasonably effective bio video off network television to show Clint mumbling.

  2. SussexAnon says:

Eastwood started his speech with “you usually don’t hear much from conservatives in Hollywood/Democrats are busy hot-doggin’ it”

Then proceeded to the punchline with a showing of “…..and heres why.” Then hot dogs it in the worst possible Saturday Night Live last sketch of the night sort of way.

Clint wasn’t that much different from the current Romney/Ryan team. Clint imagines a conversation. R/R imagines statements, policies and actions by the President that are also detached from reality.

Oh, this was horribly painful to watch.

Poor Mitt, his big night was lost to Eastwood’s ramblings, because all everyone is talking about is Clint.

Clint made a train wreck look like a first communion. It made my day.Hilarious.

  5. Tom McKenney says:

Christie, Rubio, Ryan, and other Republican hopefuls seemed more in interested in promoting themselves for 2016 than supporting Romney. I get the impression they expect him to fail.

  6. Rustydils says:

You are overlooking the best line, he addressed democrats, republicans, and libertarians, and said it does not matter which group yor from, the president did not get the job done, so we are going to have to let him go, to thounderous applause

  7. kavips says:

I think Eastwood is smarter than you think… Story out now is that he bet Bill Gates $10 million he could get the Republican Convention to wildly cheer getting the troops out of Afghanistan tomorrow….

    He’s a richer man today…..

    I am, I said
    To no-one there
    And no-one heard at all
    Not even the chair
