Friday Open Thread [8.31.12]

Filed in Open Thread by on August 31, 2012

It is amazing to me that it is the end of August. The good news is that Fall should be here any time now. What are your plans for Labor Day weekend? Me, I’m working on the last lit drop of the season and possibly helping on a canvass.

The Case for Mitt Romney as a Serial Liar. This article inventories a bunch of work Steve Benen has done documenting the Mendacity of Mitt and challenges evangelicals to take a hard look at a candidate whose strategy to win is rooted in lying:

One of the weirder aspects of this for me is watching this unfold in the politically conservative culture of my evangelical world. The most partisan evangelical conservatives are also those most likely to rant against “relativism” and to trumpet their status as defenders of “absolute truth.” Those same folks will dismiss this post — and all 30 of Benen’s posts above — as mere partisan attacks without ever bothering to examine the 533 factual instances of Mitt’s mendacity, chronicled.

That’s the only cognitive defense they have, I guess. Jam fingers in ears and shout la-la-la-you’re-being-partisan!

Because, you see, the fact that Mitt Romney said something he knew to be false is a partisan fact. And the fact that he has done this at least 533 times in the past 30 weeks is also partisan.

And in serially breaking the 9th Commandment. Just sayin’.

The Friday Bacon! Maple Syrup, Bacon and Blueberry Bread Pudding

Yum! I’m pretty picky about Bread Pudding (as in I won’t eat much of it), but this one looks pretty tasty.

  1. from the WSJ:

California’s state legislature on Thursday passed the nation’s first law banning professional psychological therapy aimed at turning gay and lesbian youth straight.

  2. Tom McKenney says:

Such therapy should be treated as a crime of fraud.

  4. Republican David says:

It may interest you to know that 9th Commandment is about perjury and the perversion of justice by lying. It is about the administration of justice not lying.

  5. Geezer says:

It may interest you to know that the 9th Commandment’s meaning is disputed, and that your narrow definition, though it was the original intent of the commandment, is not universally accepted among the faithful as the full extent of it.

It may interest everyone to know that your view is so narrow and legalistic — when it serves your interest to be narrow and legalistic, of course.

  6. SussexAnon says:

“It may interest you to know that 9th Commandment is about perjury and the perversion of justice by lying. It is about the administration of justice not lying.”

This from the party who cannot comprehend the “you didn’t build that” speech.

  7. cassandra_m says:

    This is the 9th Commandment(KJV):

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

None of the nuns and priests responsible for my religious education would have recognized that smarmy and legalistic bit of business he repeated here. Shame how far some people will go to justify the incredibly bad behavior of the people on their team.

  8. Tom McKenney says:

The Republican party is the party that can’t comprehend you didn’t build that. They also have a poor comprehension of grammar. You didn’t build that refers to the list of items before “if you own a business ….you did not build that” But I really do not expect any reality coming from any Republican politicians, they seem to enjoy telling lies. It reminds me of a statement from Mark Twain to the effect of the truth is such a precious thing so I use it as sparingly as possible.

  10. Jpconnorjr says:

Hey Paul Clark supporters…. If there are any… Do you think getting signs placed by threatening property managers and developers is effective??? Just askin’

  11. Josh says:

No, not at all. Do you have proof of this accusation. I think that I’ve seen Paul Clark, signs knocked down all over the county by some nefarious group. I will call them republicans because, I don’t trust them. Luckily for Paul, whatever nefarious entities are out there they don’t control the mail.

  12. PAUL says:

ANYONE HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE LATEST JOHN AROUND DOUCHE BAGGERY? APPARENTLY IN ADDITION TO CHEATING ON HIS WIFE WITH A WOMAN IN SELBYVILLE, HE IS ALSO HOOKING UP WITH A TEACHER TOO.

  13. PAUL says:

SORRY, PUSHED SUBMIT TOO EARLY. CAN WE GET THIS EVIL BAG OUT OF HERE. SOMEONE TELL PETE TO DROP HIS SUPPORT. HE DOESN’T NEED THIS PUPPET THAT BAD.

  14. Real Deal says:

It only requires the ability to read the 9th commandment, but if you need historical context cassandra m. http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/Halakha_&_aggadata_&_midrash.html

In Jewish law, perjury is a particularly serious sin, and outlawed by the ninth of the Ten Commandments.

  15. cassandra_m says:

Isn’t interesting that it is these showily religious GOP types who need to show up here to point to Jewish law to get to an interpretation of the Ninth Commandment that lets them lie their asses off.

I wasn’t raised Jewish, but Catholic and this is how they teach (or taught via the Catechism) the Ninth Commandment (which is the 8th for Catholics):

    264. What is the eighth commandment of God?
The eighth commandment of God is: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. (Exodus 20:16)

    265. What are we commanded by the eighth commandment?
By the eighth commandment we are commanded to speak the truth in all things, but especially in what concerns the good name and honor of others.

Wherefore, put away lying and speak truth each one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. (Ephesians 4:25)

    266. What does the eighth commandment forbid?
The eighth commandment forbids lies, rash judgment, detraction, calumny, and the telling of secrets we are bound to keep.

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. (Proverbs 12:22)

And how about this exposition from Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary:

The ninth commandment continues the emphasis upon ethical relationships. The command does not confine itself to prohibiting the telling of untruths, but speaks particularly about telling untruths concerning others. Congratulating oneself upon one’s honesty is to miss the point of the commandment. Integrity is not for oneself, but for the sake of others; it is that they may live in security, knowing that we will treasure their reputation above our own.

Seems to me that the relatively contemporary Christian teaching (although the Baltimore Catechism goes back to the late 1800’s) focuses on this commandment as one of those instructing Christians on their moral relationship to other people. But yet here we have so-called Christians working on a justification for their own need to be able to lie to other people just to be able to maintain a worldview.

  16. Aoine says:

But wait – there is more – much more

simulation is telling a lie – actively

dissimulation is obfusticating the truth – or not telling the wholetruth – lying by omission

    http://www.authorama.com/essays-of-francis-bacon-7.html

the 9th covers a lot of ground – but Im just a lying heathean liberal that hates God and wants the seperation of Church and state – and God out of County Council and School prayer

sounds like the old tale of the Pharisees and the Sadducies all over again – the GOP wears GOD on their sleeve and the right embracese religion – very few live the life tho.

yeah and what would I know???
