Tough Campaign Messaging

Filed in National by on August 27, 2012

Am looking for alot of opinions from DL readers on this one. The sticker shown below is from the Alex Pires campaign and was on the Sunday NJ as delivered (I think delivered) to one of our favorite commenters yesterday. Since this individual knows that some of us do not see the dead tree version of the paper, this was sent in to share. I’m not sure if this was on all of the papers statewide, but take a look and tell us if you think this is effective or not:

What do you think? It certainly taps into something and if this is the first shot, then I think we are in for an interesting campaign here.

    I actually like it.

  2. Jason330 says:

If anyone could be voted out of the Senate for being an aloof a-hole who is too transparent about being in the pocket of big business, it is Tom Carper.

Only…I don’t think you can be voted out of the Senate for being an aloof a-hole who is too transparent about being in the pocket of big business.

There was probably a chance to make this a referendum on TC’s suckitude, but I think Piers started too late. He also started too crazy with the “health questions” nonsense.

  3. puck says:

This takes Pires out of the running even as a protest vote. I’m not going to cast my Democratic primary vote for someone who can’t even identify himself as a Democrat. The plague-on-both-houses meme has no place in a Democratic campaign.

  4. puck says:

hmmm… is Pires running as an independent? I have to go check now.

… Yup, that was an epic fail. I thought he was trying to primary Carper. Shows you how little I have been paying attention to this race.

In that case his sticker is right on.

  5. auntie dem says:

Paul, what are you doing here? I mean it’s pouring down rain and only 9:00AM but aren’t there some doors you should be knocking? ;o)

  6. SussexWatcher says:

I have been surprised to see Spanarelli signs out & about. Guess the guy has money. Haven’t seen a single Pires sign anywhere.

  7. cassandra_m says:

I think that Pires 1.0 *was* (for a hot minute) a Dem primary against Carper. Then Pires 2.0 is now an iPod candidacy.

  8. SussexWatcher says:

Pires was at first running an unaffiliated campaign, then realized he’d be all the way over to the right on the ballot and hooked up with the Insane Candidate Posse.

  9. socialistic ben says:

I like it. Im not at all familiar with his political views, he seems to get japed at here quite a bit. Anything to make Carper sweat a bit I guess.

  10. jason330 says:

    “Insane Candidate Posse”

lol. Morning props to you good sir.

  11. Dave says:

It’s pretty smart and snappy. Not for thinking people, but then maybe that doesn’t describe the typical voter.

To me, the larger issue is control of Congress. Normally I prefer a division of power between the White House and Congress so that opposite parties are in control. But that is no longer possible here since the GOP has ceased to be a responsible grown up party. I honestly do not believe it benefits America for the GOP to be in charge of anything that is vital to the nation. One day, they may return to a party of responsibility. But not now. Now they truly are the American Taliban, they are the real RINOs.

I don’t consider Pires a real choice in any sense of the term but even if there was a real choice, my national interests are better served to ensure fringe groups (the GOP) are marginalized, even to the point of non-existence.

  12. SussexAnon says:

Its an effective sticker for those still reading the dead tree media. Pires “sounds” good until you actually hear him speak.

There is someone primarying Carper. And I am surprised there hasn’t been more support on this site for Spanarelli given how much everyone bitches here about Carper.

  13. Dominique says:

    Alot is not aword.

  14. Jason330 says:

Spanarelli is a bit of a mystery. He has a pretty slick web site and nice signs. As far as issues are concerned, he sounds like a budget hawk to me which is a misreading of what is wrong with America right now.

  15. Anonymous says:

I think it is effective, IF it is not too wordy and laid out for the average reader who only looks at the headlines for 3 seconds or less.

  16. SussexAnon, the problem with Spanarelli is that he kept himself completely under wraps until about two weeks ago, when he unveiled his KSPAN idea: having a camera in his Senate office so that people could watch his interactions with lobbyists.

I mean, not even a bleeping PICTURE until then. We had no verification if he was even a real person.

And, since that press release, crickets.

I took a backseat to no one when it came to pleading for a credible primary challenger to Carper. But hiding from public scrutiny is not what I had in mind.

As to Pires, I might consider voting for him…IF he pledges to caucus with the Democrats. In fact, I probably would vote for him as the anti-Carper. I like how he’s calling out Carper on Carper’s flirtations with vouchers and privatization of Social Security, and Carper’s typical ‘have it both ways’ (pun intentional) stance on equal rights for gays. But, he’s GOT to pledge to caucus with the Democrats b/c it could be close to a 50-50 split, and the LAST thing that I’d want is Mitch McConnell as leader of the Senate.

  17. Frondly says:

SussexAnon…..you should know by now that change is not the purpose of this site. It’s all about the whining journey. Without misery, there would be no liberals, and vice versa.

  18. Geezer says:

Without backward-looking stupidity, there would be no conservatives.

  19. Alex Pires says:

This is Alex Pires. Thanks for the comments. This sticker is the first of two a week for the next ten weeks. Our billboards on 95 , 113, 13 and 1 go up next week. Our yard signs go out over the next three weeks. Television and radio start right after the primary.

  20. SussexAnon says:

Alex made a pledge on WGMD to caucus with NO ONE.

Of course, that was also when he pledged to not join a party. Which he did shortly afterwards.

I don’t know much about Spanarelli other than his yard signs just showed up all over Rte 1 today in Rehoboth/Lewes.

Given the abundance of disagreements you (El Som) and others have about Carper, I find tardiness a weak argument to not support Spanarelli.

  21. SussexWatcher says:

KSpan isn’t just tardy, he’s this close to being a non candidate. Running for office involves more than putting up campaign signs and putting out a dumbass press release. We still have no idea who he is.

  22. SussexAnon says:

He has a website, has been in the press and he responds to emails. Feel free to, you know, actually do some work and find out if his policies match in any way to yours.

I still find it a weak argument after all the complaining on here about Carper. Carper is ignoring him and hopes he goes away. Carper has also refused to debate him.

I guess apathy reaches everyone at some point.

  23. JTF says:

Well, looks likes Pires is going to split the anti establishment vote with Wade.

  24. SussexWatcher says:

It’s not the voter’s job to reach out to a candidate. It’s the candidate’s job to tell me why he or she deserves my trust and vote. Mike Miller has done a better job of that than KSpan.

If I were Carper, I’d refuse to debate him, too. He’s a joke with some cash who apparently lives under a rock.

  25. SussexAnon says:

That’s just it Watcher, you are not “just a voter.” The mere fact you are on this site regularly places you higher up the food chain. This blog supposedly has activists. Activists who just so happen to dislike Carper. You would think someone on this site would actually see if his policies are anywhere near the point of view of some on this site.

If you keep waiting for change to come to you in a slick flashy 21st century campaign, you are going to end up with the same candidates sent to Washington.

Sparanelli may, in fact, be a joke, but one thing is certain, Mike Miller definitely is.
