Seriously WGMD?

Filed in Delaware by on July 30, 2012

Another story that I saw last week on WGOP that struck me as a little odd was this one. Hey “liberal” News Journal, if I, as a party activist and blogger, run against an entrenched incumbent upstate in 2014, will I get such meaningless yet glowing coverage as this:

State Senate Candidate Matt Opaliski is discarding candidate surveys and is declining endorsements and contributions from liberal groups. Opaliski on Tuesday was reviewing postal and electronic mail that is typically sent to campaigns during the election season by various organizations seeking to survey candidates on positions that usually favor these groups and, in most cases, hint at a potential endorsement.

Opaliski tells WGMD that he threw two questionnaires in the garbage; one was from the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Delaware and another was from the Laborers’ District Council of Delaware. Opaliski says that since Planned Parenthood treats babies like trash, he decided he would treat their survey and any potential endorsement or campaign contribution from them like trash. Opaliski is running for the newly reapportioned 18th District Senate seat.

Hey all women and all workers, you got that? The message from Opaliski is: “YOU’RE TRASH.”

I highly doubt many aspects of this “story.” While it is possible that both Planned Parenthood and the Laborer’s Union sent Opaliski candidate surveys, it must assuredly done as a matter of course as such organizations want to appear nonpartisan and thus they send their surveys out to anyone and everyone who has filed to run for office. And it is possible that each organization’s enclosure letter to him mentioned that any possible endorsement and contributions from them is tied to the completion of their endorsement survey. But make no mistake, Matt Opaliski was never, ever, in a million years, going to be endorsed by a Union that values worker’s rights and fair pay, nor was he going to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood since he is not at all concerned about the health and welfare of women.

So that’s the story, a fringe candidate threw surveys from two organizations in the trash, two organizations from which he had no hope whatsoever of ever getting an endorsement or funds from.

And that’s news on WGMD in Sussex County.

The most important part of the story in my mind is how WGMD characterizes the seat Opaliski is running for.

Opaliski is running for the newly reapportioned 18th District Senate seat.

This makes it sound like Opaliski is running in the newly created 20th RD or the newly created 6th SD. “Newly reapportioned?” All 62 districts in the House and Senate are newly reapportioned. That’s what happens after a census. But do you notice what is missing from the story?

Any mention … at all… of Opaliski’s opponent. No mention of the fact that he is challenging the most powerful Republican incumbent in the state. Yes, you all remember Senate Minority Leader Gary Simpson, don’t you?

He garners nary a mention. It is almost as if Matt wrote the piece himself.

You are pretty dumb, he is commenting on the liberal lefties not the women or laborers. How f’ing stupid can you be.

  2. Delaware Dem says:

Well, I know I am much smarter than you since I can actually read what Matt said and understand it. And no where in this story does Opaliski mention “liberal lefties.” He is referring to the entire organization and their membership.

  3. SussexAnon says:

Matt ran as a libertarian for something last time 2010. He is a constitutional fetishist.

WGMD practices the fine art of “copy-paste” news reporting, not journalism.

I will leave the big package of stupid wtf just left for someone else to unpack.

That was nothing- u should read the other article on hin
The one in the cape gazette i think-
He wants to slap ammendments on the EVERY bill that comes thru the House to slow government down

But wait- there is more….. Lots more

He is justa big fat drooling leftover tea-bagger
That is sorely in need OF. A tea- bagging….

  5. Jason330 says:

This is only a news story if the mission of your “news” operations is to keep stupid people in a constant state of perturbed consternation.

  6. anon says:

Opaliski is one of those “He’s not conservative enough” teabaggers. He ran as the “conservative” against Booth and Mervine in the 2009 special election and got 5%. Now that he’s in Simpson’s district he’s running against Simpson because Simpson is too “passive.” Opaliski wants any seat he can get so he can go on the government dole and then complain about the government.

  7. SussexWatcher says:

SussexAnon is right. That’s the candidate’s phrasing. From MO’s website: “This morning at the Sussex County Department of Elections in Georgetown, Greenwood resident Matthew Opaliski will file to run for the State Legislature in the newly reapportioned Senate District 18.”

Btw, he was an IPOD wannabe in the special election for Adams’ seat when Booth won. I don’t think he’s ever been a Libertarian. He’s been a perrennial candidate for year’s, running quixotically against Thurman Adams.

  8. WWB says:

I have been redistricted out of Gary Simpson’s district into the new senate (and house) districts. Opaliski is like the other tea party nuts around here…he can’t stand the idea that Simpson is willing to listen and consider other opinions. Gary Simpson knows I am a liberal Democrat, yet he has always been responsive and interested in my concerns. That just drives people like Opaliski, the knuckledraggers who hang on every word that comes through their radio from WGMD, the so called journalists at the Cape Gazette, and the Sussex tea pee-ers crazy. And they didn’t have far to go.

  9. traveler says:

I heard the broadcast and read the article. Opaliski never said or insinuated that he treated women like trash. He said that Planned parenthood treated unborn babies like trash and he would treat their literature and endorsement like trash. Please be correct in what you assume or print. You make incorrect editorial comments while attempting to make it appear to be the truth, when indeed it is not.

  10. MJ says:

You all didn’t know that Matt and the Fatman are butt buddies, and that Kelli Steele and Mary Lou film when they canoodle.

(Yeah, I know, you all can’t get that ugly scene out of your heads now).

I see that teabagger traveler from Smyrna/Millsboro is back to add his less than 2 cents to the conversation. YAWN!!!!

I would be eternally grateful is this thread didn’t turn into a name calling flame war. Thank you.

  12. Joe Cass says:

I am shocked that anyone here expected Matt the Opal to be rational. Shocked, I tell you.

  13. Truth Teller says:

Treating Babies like trash. Someone should tell this guy about a Mittens company that made money doing just that.
