Biden Comes Out in Support of Same-Sex Marriage

Filed in National by on May 6, 2012

Kudos to Vice President Joe Biden saying publicly that he is “comfortable” with same-sex marriage. I could not be more proud of our Vice President right now. Watch the whole video, it is Biden at his best.

  1. JJ says:

Its the year 2012, polls are now favoring it and many states have passed it into law. Way to courageously go out on a limb now, Joe!

  2. nemski says:

JJ, you are missing the point here. Biden is the highest level US politician to EVER say this. Poll-wise this is far from a slam-dunk, and the states that are passing any legislation are passing civil union bills not marriage bills. Look to our south and see what’s happening in North Carolina.

As Joe would say, “This is a big fucking deal.”

  3. kavips says:

jj always misses the point. That is why he/she/it types their name with capital letters… If they used small letters, there would be two points; one on each “j”.

  4. kavips says:

and back on topic, I always said “Biden had the better shine.”

  5. @Nemski: Is that really true?

Not that I doubt you, but no vice-pres has ever taken a favorable stance on the matter?

Sad it took this long, but that’s how it goes I guess.

  6. nemski says:

Dick Cheney never said it such terms, i.e. never saying “gay marriage”. And he also said it should be decided on a state by state basis.

Al Gore was part of the Clinton administration that signed on the Defense of Marriage Act and only supported civic unions.

  7. JJ says:

If Biden had said this in 2008, I’d be impressed Now hes just getting on the train which has already left the station.

Kind of like Christine Gregoire in Washington state. In her first year of office, she wasn’t on record supporting gay marriage. They hedge and use all the phoney baloney straddle. But in her final (8th year), she finally gets the courage to give it full throated support.

  8. Dave says:

I don’t think the government should be in the business of “marriage” in the first place. Marriage should be left to religions to validate or sanctify.

Government should only regulate the contractual union of individuals and in that regard, ANY two people of legal age should be able to form a civil union. Whether they are of the same, opposite, or indeterminate sex or blood relatives or just friends and the law should recognize those unions in regards to property rights, decision making and other contractual arrangements that accrue from what we call marriage today.

  9. Rustydils says:

Of couse Biden also inferred that he is comfortable with china’s one child per family policy. So I’m not sure we should look to him as our compass.

  10. Liberal Elite says:

@Rd “Of couse Biden also inferred that he is comfortable with china’s one child per family policy.”

What? The policy is that if you have a 2nd child, you pay full fare for its education… no government handouts for you. I thought conservatives would be just lovin’ that one.

  11. Rustydils says:

Liberal elite, are you really that naive. Pull my left leg and it plays jingle bells.

  12. Liberal Elite says:

I don’t think you have a clue about what’s going on in China. You know… The wealthy there can have as many children as they want. Officially, forced abortions ended 10 years ago. Now it’s “pay up” if you want two or more (very conservative like thinking), so as a result, there’s something like 1.2 males born for every female born… (and it’s not the government aborting females).

  13. Venus says:

L.E.–It’s a bit more complicated than that. Yes, you can have another child, but you have to apply for it. It is only granted to the brightest, and deemed “most valuable” citizens. And that is both parents need to be of such stellar stock. And value is based on intellect, and job. So my teacher friend, and her government worker husband are not permitted another child. But her physician mother and physician father probably would be permitted another child in today’s rule change compared to 35 years ago when she was born. At least that is the way it was, as reported by her, when 2 Chinese nationals lived with me in Fall 2011.
The welathy may “pay up” as you suggest. But that would be the uber wealthy. But the majority of the population is pretty much limited, still.

    Dave,

What about 3 people and a dog? Can they solomnize?

  15. Geezer says:

QP: While the dog might be smarter than you — at least two of mine are — he cannot give informed consent.

Why does playing stupid come so naturally to conservatives?

    “President Romney” and “President Clinton”?

    If that’s Biden’s best, I’ll take it!!!

  21. Que Pasa says:

    Who?

  22. Geezer says:

QP: If you write something funny, we’ll laugh. But mostly you’ll find that your fifth-grade conservative sense of “humor” is unappreciated among adults.

  23. socialistic ben says:

I dont mean to be a negative nancy, but Biden said he was comfortable with the the idea that it is happening. he did not say the words “i support the national legalization of same sex marriage” thus giving him the opportunity to cave to right wing pressure. I know im mr “you cant approach things in an all or nothing way” and im not really saying that here… I’m just cautious in my optimism.

  24. JJ says:

Joe Biden is just posturing for 2016 and the ultra-liberal and gay activist primary voters since the national media is fawning only over Hillary and Andrew Cuomo, and dissing him for 2016.
The son of Scranton is going for the hard left. And the POTUS is still’evolving’ on the issue. And they say Romney is inauthentic??

  25. John Manifold says:

Joe Biden was just channeling George. It’s a Delaware Thang; you wouldn’t understand.
