Can Newt Gingrich Win Delaware?

Filed in Delaware by on April 24, 2012

Politico’s Ginger Gibson — yes, that Ginger Gibson — writes about Gingrich’s hope, the “dangerous state of Delaware”.Dangerous? Well, we did give the world Christine O’Donnell. And as we covered here, some are calling for the Republicans to get out the vote for Gingrich. Gibson writes:

But even some Romney backers are becoming increasingly concerned that Gingrich could catch them flatfooted and pull out a surprise victory in the state.

“He’s definitely got a chance because there are some people who feel like he really made an attempt to come to Delaware,” said state Sen. Liane Sorenson, a 20-year office holder who endorsed Romney. “There are people who will vote for him for that reason.”

Does Gingrich have a chance? The Christian Science Monitor writes, “And in Delaware, a small state, a few motivated rabblerousers in a low-turnout primary can bring surprising results.” Which is exactly the point. However, with Ron Paul on the ballot as well, how will the Tea Party vote?

I don’t get why guys like Ken Grant and Dave Burris would want to stick a thumb in the eye of the GOP’s nominee.

Word is that voter turnout is extremely low in Sussex. We’re talking single digits in some spots as of 8:30.

  3. nemski says:

Low turnout has been the modus operandi of the Republicsn primary. That’s some fired up base.

    Yeeeee Haw!

  5. You could see an unlikely alliance of Brandywine country club Republicans with tea partiers. It really depends on how upset the GOP insiders feel about Romney’s visit.

  6. fightingbluehen says:

There is strong support for Ron Paul in many areas of Sussex County especially western Sussex.

First, it’s always an honor to be mentioned on Delaware Liberal – second, I hope everyone understands that this is about keeping Delaware relevant for future presidential primaries. If there were two Democrat Presidential Candidates – one who spent time in Delaware and one who came here for a single visit and in the process insulted both Democrat elected officials and candidates, I would hope you would do the right thing and show that Delaware supports those that show us a little respect.

All that being said, I hope to join you all for some good conversation at Timothy’s tonight.

    I know. Sheesh…

Wow a house, with 5 registered democrats. No republicans and verifiable yellow dog democrats, has gotten two calls to vote in the closed republican primary for Mitt Romney just because of the 19807 zip code I bet. I think Newt, will win.

  11. jason330 says:

If Newt Wins, I hope he is emotionally ready to deal with the kind of silent treatment the media usually reserves for Ron Paul victories.

    Hey, don’t forget Biden.

“Word is that voter turnout is extremely low in Sussex.”

We just drove by a polling place. There were TWO cars in the parking lot. I would have gone early to avoid the stampede… if I was a Republican.

“Gingrich tricks people into attending campaign events in Delaware « Sussex County Angel”

Angel sure is a cutie pie, and purports to be a Libertarian. However, I get the distinct impression that she would blow Ron Paul, but not swallow.

    Hey, don’t forget Biden.

Joe Biden defeated the state’s most popular politician, crushed John Burris, frightened away Pete du Pont, buried Robert Bork, earned worldwide respect and friendships across party and class divisions. The GOP acknowledged as much by not fielding a serious opponent against him after 1984.

Sure, his bluntness has caused his lessers to giggle. But he’s been making national and world policy for 30 years.

Christine O’Donnell’s reached her apogee when she won 3 percent of the vote.

Possibly true, in some feeble minds. But he’s still the laughing stock of the Obama administration. Like Quayle with bad hair. In your self created role of his chief ball washer, you’re obviously infatuated with his incompetence. I liked him better as a Senator, before he sold out Delaware law enforcement. When he’s not in front of his sycophants, he’s a very reasonable person.

Lessers? Granted. I’m not as clean and articulate…

How did he sell out Delaware law enforcement?

I’ve heard better at last call.
