Never Again!

Never again can we stand silent when a government decides that genocide is the way to deal with its citizens.

Never again can we forget to keep the memories alive of the millions of Jews, Roma, Gays, political dissidents, liberals and conservatives who perished at the hands of the Nazis.

I also honor the memory of those who perished at the hands of the Turks in Armenia, those who were starved and killed in Darfur, and those who have been murdered by the Syrian government.

In an age when West Virginia GOP Senate candidate can claim that not being able to smoke in public places is the ”same thing” as when “Hitler used to put Star of David on everybody’s lapel,” it is clear that we have a lot of work to do.

As Nemski’s post pointed out yesterday, the future leaders of the Republican Party, the people in state level elected offices right now, are a terrifying gang of blood thirsty idiots. If ever fascism had an opening in America, it is today. The opening can be found whenever you see Republicans promoting empty flag waving gestures of patriotism over honoring our democratic traditions.

As Sinclair Lewis is reported as saying, “When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and waving a cross”

Right now it is not a question of “when” fascism comes. It is a question of how far it will continue to progress.

Now you’ve done it, MJ. I posted something on the Armenian genocide about three-four years ago and I was immediately inundated with trolls lecturing me on the “fact” that there had been no Armenian genocide. I even got one from the Turkish Embassy. But I put it in the title of the post, so maybe you will get away clean.

Everybody, apropos jason’s comment, should read Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here”

From HuffPo – West Virginia GOP Senate candidate John Raese is defending his comment that compared a smoking ban to Hitler forcing Jews to wear the Star of David.

“I am not going to be intimidated by a bunch of bullshit,” Raese told the Charleston Daily Mail on Thursday, blaming the controversy on “gotcha” tactics by opponent Sen. Joe Manchin.

Translation – “Yeah, I didn’t do anything wrong. It’s all his fault.”
