That’s What She Said (Part II)

Filed in National by on April 4, 2012

One of the best places for hard-hitting political news is on “The View”. So it should be of no surprise to South Caroline Governor Nikki Haley that she got grilled by some of the best in the business: Barbara Walters, Joyce Behar, Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Mediaite writes:

She wanted to know about Haley’s stance on women’s rights, which are often assumed to be the purview of Democrats rather than Republicans.

“Women don’t care about contraception,” Haley said, “they care about jobs and their families…” She was cut off by Joy Behar, who bristled along with the rest of the panel and noted that women should care about contraception.

To watch this new bright light of the Republican Party fade on a softball question from Hasselbeck is just a joy to watch.

    Head’s up. That doesn’t happen to 5:50.

  2. pandora says:

    Two things…

    1. She wasn’t asked about contraception, she went there all by herself.

    2. “We don’t want government to mandate when we have to have it (contraception) and when we don’t.”

Reread that sentence. Where is government mandating having contraception? This is really the GOP’s rising star? Someone who created her own gaffe and then pulled a Palin?

  3. Socialistic ben says:

there is a large difference between the government mandating that people have the option to choose contraception without going broke, and the government forcing pills down people’s throats.,…. if you are a sane person. no one in the republican party is a sane person.

  4. Que Pasa says:

Who out there is going broke buying contraception?

  5. puck says:

I went broke NOT buying contraception 🙂

  6. Idealist says:

    Puck for the win!

  7. Socialistic ben says:

not many people QP……. mostly because most states still have planned parenthood. what you refuse ot understand is that if pp goes away, people WILL go broke… need i remind oyu that in order for the pill to work…. and women dont only use it to have sex with men other than you… some of them do and i know that makes you upset…. but there are other uses… In order for it to work it has to be taken every day…. or, they WONT use contraception and hop men will be responsible and cover it up…. or demand they do. But if THAT doest work, people are still gonna screw and guess which half of that DNA gets stuck with the kid? (not the father) so now oyu have a single mother, another thing conservatives love to beat up on….. who’s welfare and SNAP options have been taken away.
Why cant they just admit this is about punishing women for having sex?

  8. pandora says:

Add to that… pregnancy is expensive. Unplanned pregnancy even more so. Businesses and Insurance companies know this and would gladly pay for contraception over pregnancy.

Also, not all flippin’ birth control costs the same. The pill differs widely in cost, and not all women can use the cheapest bill for… wait for it… medical reasons.

  9. Que Pasa says:

Wt scnd nd slw dwn y blbbrng, vrl ss-mptv smpltn…

I know full well how the pill works and that it is used for more than just contraception. My college girlfriend was on it to help her bones absorb more calcium, but even then the out of pocket cost, even off insurance, didn’t caused her, a ‘poor’ college student, to go “broke”. On the contrary, I’ve also known women who can’t use the pill because it screws up their hormones too much.

    But I digress…

Just who is going to go “broke” buying contraception, i.e. the pill, for contraceptive purposes??? Could it potentially be an economic hardship for a tiny minority of people, in the amount of a few tens of dollars a week at most? Maybe, maybe not. But to use the term “broke” is a rather outlandish.

    Here’s a paper bag…and brrreeeeaattthhh!

  10. Que Pasa says:

And if a religious institution doesn’t want to provide coverage for contraception based on their beliefs, they should never have to, as well as there should be no strings attached should they make this decision…PERIOD!!!

  11. pandora says:

Um… that’s an old argument. A religious exception was added, and the cost shifted to the insurance companies. It should be noted that the insurance companies didn’t flip out over this because covering contraception is a sound business decision for them.

  12. Socialistic ben says:

so you think a religious institution should have been allowed to let your girlfriend become calcium deficient because Jesus would have wanted it that way. she musta loved you.
HOw about things other than birth control? Jehovah’s Witnesses dont believe in blood transfusions. Should they be allowed to let their employees who need those die? What about a Muslim employer…. should he require women wear burkas to work? How far is your “freedom of employers to subject their employees to their religious laws” philosophy go?

also, how much does the birth control pill cost WITHOUT help from an insurance company?

  13. V says:

I can’t remember the EXACT price but a few years ago I tried to renew my perscription when it wasn’t allowed yet (the next month’s pack went missing so I tried to get another one, but I eventually found it). Thank goodness I did find it because the replacement pack that insurance wouldn’t cover was more expensive than I was prepared for. I DO remember being freaked out by it.

In my case (for a generic) it was somewhere in the range of $75-100 bucks, sorry I can’t be more precise.

  14. Que Pasa says:

I’m arguing Stupid Ben’s hyperventilative “broke” meme, Pandora. I added in the religion part because of the assinine effrontory on the part of the Obama Administration to even think they could ram that one past the Catholic Church.

    Stupid Ben,

The phantom religious institution you conjured up wouldn’t have allowed anything. In America, people are free to purchase items they need. If said item, i.e. insurance coverage, does not cover their particular ailment or medical need/desire, then they are free to go elsewhere, either by finding a new job or paying for it out of pocket. For example, I would like to have eye surgery to correct my near-sightedness, but it is not covered under my plan. So I have to pay for it out of my pocket…oh the outrage!!!

  15. Socialistic ben says:

Yes, because it is SO simple to just find a new job. Im not sure if you’re aware, but the ACA is going to be struck down…. so it wont be easy to buy insurance anymore either. in fact, insurance companies…. if they are smart… will do everything they can to maximize profits (by letting people die) before they are eliminated entirely as an industry.

Are you also saying that Jws do not exist? or do you just not have an answer?
Should someone be allowed to dictate that another person NOT be covered for blood transfusions based on faith? EVEN IF the person getting their life saved s not of that faith? yes or no? it’s very simple, you are so much smarter than me, you should be able to answer my stupid question.

I would also point out that you have connected elective cosmetic surgery to life saving medically necessary hormone treatment. and you call ME stoopid.

  16. Mrs XStryker says:

What about Christian Scientists? Should they not be required to provide medical insurance at all? (Really, SBen, I can’t believe you didn’t think of that one)

Look QP, no one is asking these religious institutions to pay for anything. What people want is for the insurance plans for which they pay the premiums to cover basic prescriptions (and yes, the pill is pretty basic for women). The insurance companies win because they spend less covering prescriptions than paying for all the care required of pregnancy. The employer need not even be aware any of this is going on, frankly. Precious few employers are actually paying the full cost of their employees’ health insurance.

  17. Socialistic ben says:

ooo nice catch MRS X. !!!
but QP will just say that only 6 people are CS and we can trust them…..
QP either has a good job with great insurance, is a shiftless layabout who leeches off the government while panning other who do so, or is an employer who thinks it’s unfair he should be concerned with the health of his human assets.. if the get sick why cant he just fire them and hire someone healthy?

  18. Que Pasa says:

No…”stpd”…I was connecting elective surgery with elective contraception. When the pill is primarily prescribed for some other medical need, it ceases becoming a contraceptive measure first, e.g. my former girlfriend was prescribed the pill when she was only 12 for her medical need…many years prior to her ever needing it for contraception.

Um, it would be easier to find a new job, if the economy were better, but that’s for another discussion.

Regardless, we are also personally responsible for learning for ourselves what is entailed with the jobs we take, particularly when it comes to benefits. Again, I’m not arguing against contraception being covered under private health insurance, I’m calling you out on your vapid and breathless, ladies-are-gonna-go-broke overreach.

  19. Que Pasa says:

And whoever is doing it, please stop scrambling up my rather benign insults…they are there for entertainment purposes only.

  20. Que Pasa says:

    “Stpd”,

I have excellent health insurance, because I have an excellent job that I earned through patience, dilligence and hard work.

    What is your excuse?

  21. Socialistic ben says:

“When the pill is primarily prescribed for some other medical need, it ceases becoming a contraceptive measure first”

exactly… im shocked that you realize this actually…. because people are STILL trying to deny coverage for this because it CAN be contraception.
I have a problem with anyone being allowed to force their religious views on people. your apparently fine with it. we will never agree. If people are allowed to dictate what their employees do to their bodies based on their personal religious views, we’ve gone back to the 1600s. Conservatives would never stand for it if it was any other religion proposing it.

  22. Socialistic ben says:

I actually have great health insurance too… because of hard work and yada yada.
Im not angry for me. I don’t care about me. Im a relatively health person who takes care of myself. I care about people who aren’t me, and that’s what separates me from you.

  23. Socialistic ben says:

QP is getting feisty today… it’s almost like he thought his horribly offensive remarks in the past wouldn’t effect him ever. Poor conservatives.
“my insults are just for entertainment booo hooo”

  24. Que Pasa says:

“I have a problem with anyone being allowed to force their religious views on people. your apparently fine with it.”

If you were to work for a religious institution, say a university that they owned/ran, then you’d have to adhere to their principles…otherwise, as I said, go get a new job!

“Horribly offensive?” Boo hoo, I presume this site is for adults who can take a humorous verbal punch now and then. Remember, it was the owners of this site who set the tone (e.g. Jason330), not me.

  25. cassandra_m says:

You know, it is pretty funny to see QP go through his rigamorole fighting for the rights of religious institution which actually have laws to abide by just be claiming that their religious beliefs trump these laws. In the mean time, he can’t seem to wrap his mind around the fact that there are rules of the road here and he doesn’t set them. If you can’t live with them, Delaware Politics probably wants you. Otherwise, quit it with the name calling.

  26. Socialistic ben says:

I like being called stupid. It shows whoever is trying to insult me is out of things to say. it also give me the pass to make personal insults without having to throw the first punch…. essentially, if someone calls you stupid, you win the argument…. and they get disemvoweled 🙂
