Andrew Brietbart was Killed for This?

Filed in National by on March 8, 2012

That was Barack Obama in a 1990 video at Harvard protests in favor of the cause of Professor Derek Bell and the hiring of more minority faculty members. Isn’t it amazing that Obama sounds and looks exactly the same (sans afro today). Obviously Obama has a time machine.

Professor Bell was the first tenured African American professor of law at Harvard. He was a lifetime advocate of civil rights and greater diversity of college faculties. Breitbart tried to make the case that Professor Bell was a radical. He also said that the above video was edited to protect Obama. Brietbart had the unedited version, which was a full two seconds longer.

What were in those two seconds? Hold your onto your seats: Barack Obama hugging the Harvard Professor he had just lauded.

Impeach him.

It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hug Us Back.

Yeah, I stole that from someplace.

And I’m a fan of the conspiracy theory that NPR included a contract on Brietbart as one of their Exclusive Subscriber thank you gifts.

I’m not sure I can survive all the stupid heading our way this year.

I’m reserving comment until Arpiao has a chance to run this through his de-layering machine.

  5. MJ says:

Cass, actually, I got that contract when I made a $250 pledge to WHYY during the Peter, Paul and Mary concert they showed the other night. 🙂

This incident just proves how racist Breitbart, Malkin and the Republicans are. From a reader at TPM:

The “controversy” around President Obama’s 1990 speech at Harvard on the occasion of the late Professor Bell’s decision to take a leave of absence to protest Harvard’s hiring practices is shameful in what it implies (full disclosure — Professor Bell taught me Constitutional Law at NYU during his self-imposed exile from Harvard).

The implication is that Professor Bell was some kind of violent radical racist. Professor Bell was a HERO who dedicated his life to desegregating the United States. From his job as the only black lawyer in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in the 1950’s, to his work alongside Thurgood Marshall bringing hundreds of desegregation actions in Mississippi, right up to his leaving Harvard, Professor Bell lived what he preached. That his life’s work was radical or provocative says more about how far we have left to go. If its radical to be appalled that Harvard Law School had no women law professors and only five black male law professors among hundreds of professors, then the world could use a lot more radicals. And to tarnish his reputation as simply anti-white is false and totally and intentionally missing the point. I hope to see President Obama speak about Professor Bell, in prime time, on all networks, if for no other reason than this was an American hero that more people should know about and take inspiration from.

And any right wing knuckle dragger who comes here to support the latest Breitbart Fever Dream are racists too.

Cass: Sometimes stealing is good. I laughed out loud.

I agree with you, DD. To try to take the career of a man who was been at the forefront of the Civil Rights fight here in the US and to try to make him (and by association, the entire Civil Rights project) into some out of control radical is pretty retrograde. But this is pitched quite precisely at the people who think that a bunch of black kids sitting at a cafeteria table together are an incipient problem.

Am hoping that the MSM rolls its collective eyes at this, but am not hopeful.

This video just makes me like President Obama even more.

  11. Joe Cass says:

Gotta be fake because FOX has always said that there is no proof that the kenyan/marxist/fascist/socialist/communist/mooslim/addyourownstupidslur ever attended Harvard. Don’t try to point out the Review thing;your facts are impotent against ignorance.

  12. sussexanon says:

Has the Brietbart Group, or conservatives issued a statement with this video? The right seems silent on this issue.

Is it possible they are silent because it shows Obama making a reasoned plea? Or is it because the dog whistle hasn’t blown yet?

  13. V says:

    I second Joe that it’s a fake. He’s not using a teleprompter.

  14. Delaware Dem says:

The only scandal here is “Obama Once Hung Out With Other Black People!”

  15. Jason330 says:

I love the commenter at TPM who said that Obama killed Breitbart to spare him from dying of embarrassment.

  16. puck says:

I bet Breitbart photoshopped it to make them look blacker.

  17. V says:

anyone think it’s a coincidence that Breitbart said he was holding this one back in 2008, and now, a year after Bell’s death so he can’t come on tv and eloquently expound on how dumb this is, this is “coming to light”?

  18. puck says:

Probably O’Keefe wanted to release it and Breitbart said “Over my dead body!”

  19. TC says:

Look how young we all were…

Jon Chait has an amusing take on the legendary video that Brietbart et al were plumping: Fabled Obama Video

What’s ironic is that Breitbart and his band of brain dead pranksters would trade a functioning nuclear arsenal to Iran for a real video of Obama doing this. Since, I suspect, that is is this message that his readers actually hear from the President every time he speaks.
