Sunday Open Thread — Oscars Edition! [2.26.12]

Filed in Open Thread by on February 26, 2012

Tonite the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents their awards for 2011 film achievements. If you are outside of this industry, the interest in the Oscars seems to be either, 1) Dishy — what they wore, who they were with, what they screwed up or 2) Snobby — mostly centered around the perceived lack of artistry in the nominations. I’m in Camp 2. So what do you think about this year’s nominations? Join us below and tell us who you think will win, what should have been nominated and preview the night’s gossip.

ABC (who apparently will broadcast these) has a comprehensive list of the nominees, with clips of some of the performances and pictures of some of the work and actors. 5. Jason330 says:

The sting should win best picture and George Roy Hill, the director will probably take home the Oscar for best director. Ja ck Lemmon should get best actor and Glenda Jackson was great in ‘a touch of class’ so I’m pulling for Gelnda for best actress. John Houseman wins the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in The Paper Chase.. He should get 2 for that, let’s be honest. Even though she is only 6 or whatever, Tatum o’Neal should get the best supporting actress award for Paper Moon.

  6. Jason330 says:

The red carpet shows are horrible.

  7. John Manifold says:

    A toast to the wonderful J. L. Miller, a life well-lived.

  8. X Stryker says:

“The Star Spangled Man” from Captain America should have gotten a nomination for best song.

  9. fightingbluehen says:

If “War Horse” wins anything but the technical stuff, then we know the academy is a stacked deck.

  10. fightingbluehen says:

I’ve sort of had a rubbernecking curiosity concerning North Korea for sometime now. The bizarre and sometimes beautiful results of the total dictatorship are awe-inspiring as well as frightening.

There is a reason that the North Koreans mourn the death of the glorious leader and father with such enthusiasm. That reason is self preservation, not only for themselves, but their family and possibly their neighbors on either side of their homes. Maybe no one explained this to Sasha Baron Cohen or maybe he just has a death wish. Anyway, good luck to him. He will need it.
