Now that he’s not President anymore, I might actually like to have a beer with this guy:

Former U.S. President George W. Bush told car dealers gathered at a convention in Las Vegas he “didn’t want to gamble” with a depression in defending the loans he gave to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC.

“I didn’t want there to be 21 percent unemployment,” Bush said in a speech yesterday to cap the annual National Automobile Dealers Association convention, attended by more than 20,000 people. “I didn’t want to gamble. I didn’t want history to look back and say, ‘Bush could have done something but chose not to do it.’ And so I said, ‘no depression.’”

This is really off topic–but it’s open thread. Just how are jury duty notices really pulled? Does anybody know? I’m in an office w/ 9 part-timers–the whole staff. From Halloween till December 15th–five of them were called to jury duty. Yup–five out of nine. And guess what? The New Year brought #6–and #7 received his summons on Saturday. Could we please move the court to my office?

I know they say they pull from DMV records–but is that really true, or urban legend? What is the real process? Where are my Delaware Liberal investigative reporters?

so great news today! Handel GONE. Prop H8… GONE!

  4. Jason330 says:

Handel’s exit statement is pure wingnut victimology, and I love it.

  5. Jason330 says:

JC – I don’t know how it works, but I do know that a few years ago I could get people off by informing the court that the absence was going to create a significant disruption.

  6. MJ says:

SB – Prop 8 not quite gone, yet, but well on its way. Next stop is SCOTUS.

  7. Joanne Christian says:

WHATTTTTTT????? Where’s your sense of citizen service???? I can’t believe I am reading that entry from you!!! Only a liberal in your spare time?

  8. Jason330 says:

lol. I only used that excuse when it was true.

  9. MJ says:

Does anyone know if the 9th Circuit based their ruling at all on Romer v Evans?

  10. mediawatch says:

On the jury duty … for what it’s worth, I got called for Jan. 19 and my wife for Feb. 1. I was previously called in 2008, but last time before that was the ’90s. So there’s got to be an element of randomness to it.

One thing to keep in mind, at least in New Castle County – the day you’re called can have an impact. Longer trials tend to be scheduled to start early in the week. On Thursday, odds are you’ll get a one-day trial, often in the Court of Common Pleas.

@MJ “SB – Prop 8 not quite gone, yet, but well on its way. Next stop is SCOTUS.”

Don’t think so… SCOTUS is going to likely duck this one.
